Due to subterranean drainage, there may be very limited surface water, even to the absence of all rivers and lakes. Many karst regions display distinctive surface features, with dolines or sinkholes being the most common. However, distinctive karst surface features may be completely absent where the soluble rock is mantled, such as by glacial debris, or confined by a superimposed non-soluble rock strata. Some karst regions include thousands of explored caves, even though evidence of caves that are big enough for human exploration is not a required characteristic of karst.

A classical intermittent karst spring. For 30 minutes the water flows out at a minimum of 50 and a maximum of 1,800 litres per second (depending on precipitation). Then it stops completely for another 30 minutes only to start flowing again. This behaviour is due to the geometry of the chambers and connecting conduits, and having to fill to a certain level before draining. Fontaine de Fontestorbes, Central Pyrénées, France.

Exploring the Karst Landscape of Cockpit Country
By Parris Lyew-Ayee, School of Geography and the Environment, University of Oxford
Editor's note: Parris Lyew-Ayee, a doctoral student in the School of Geography and the Environment, University of Oxford, United Kingdom, is using GIS in his study of karst geomorphology not only as a research tool but also to manage and optimize his fieldwork. He is working in a unique region in the interior of western Jamaica called Cockpit Country. The area's thousands of depressions, caused by the erosion of limestone, were thought to resemble cockfighting arenas of 17th century England. Its rugged terrain has limited human incursions and helped preserve the area's biodiversity. With its deep karst depressions surrounded by residual hills, the Jamaican Cockpit Country is the type area for the cockpit variety of karst landscape. GIS was used to conduct a comprehensive morphometric [shape measurement] survey of the landscape and its features to unambiguously characterize the nature of cockpit karst in its type area and compare these landscapes with noncockpit karst areas as well as distinctly nonkarst areas from other parts of the planet. Such detailed morphometric investigations would provide information about how such landscapes evolved and the factors that control their development.

Letters to the editor
Proof that some people actually read this letter, is that some have responded to questions posed in the last edition. Professor Margaret Marker, an honorary member of our society has strong feelings on commercial operations within the Cape Peninsula National Park:
Commercial Caving
Among my mail was the CPSS Newsletter for March 2000. I would like to comment on the news flash "Kalk Bay - Abseiling" Having wokred with the SANPS (South African National Parks Service) in Knysna where similar problems arise, I answer your questing as follows: Q. Should commercial activities be allow in the park? A. They already are - what about the restaurant and the cable car? In Storms River there is a commercial white water tubing enterprise and a boat trip on the Storms River. I think controlled tourism related activities undoubtedly should be allowed UNDER THE AEGIS OF SANPS and by permit. Q. If they are allowed, should the operator have to contribute to the Park upkeep? A. Yes!

an article by Michael Lichon
Summary In Moss Palace, the presence of unusual speleothems further justifies action towards conservation of the Dogs Head Hill karst at Mole Creek, Tasmania. A "symbiotic" carbonate deposition and growth of the moss Distichophyllum microcarpum results in rare phototropic phytospeleothems, in the form of fan-shaped erratics.
Moss Palace Moss Palace cave was discovered during a reconnaissance of Dogs Head Hill by MCCC founding members Phill Gregg, Deb Hunter and myself, March 1988. This cave was unaffected by human visitation, and does not correspond to any record in the inventory compiled by Kiernan,
The phototropic phytospeleothems Part of the twilight zone of Moss Palace features unique phototropic phytospeleothem decorations, ranging from 2 mm to 200 mm in length. They are found (in small form) near the entrance and (in more spectacular form) on a patch of wall 2-6 m below a 0.5 m² skylight at the far end of the cave (photo 1). The best developed phytospeleothems are 5 m below the skylight. These fan-shaped erratics, (see photos), grow outwards from wall surfaces, oriented with the face of the fan perpendicular to the source of the light. They mostly occur in overlapping clusters, (photo 4), with only the outermost edges being readily visible from the direction of the light. These edges consist of a fringe of living moss

Features of karst terrains may include a variety of sinkholes, solution valleys, underground rivers, caverns, disappearing streams, towers, and distinctive conical hills. Although most karst is developed in limestone (CaCO ) or dolomite (MgCaCO ) it also forms in soluble evaporite deposits. Karst-like features developed in permafrost by the melting ice is called

CAVE SEDIMENTS AS INDICATORS OF GEOMORPHIC DEVELOPMENT, MATIENZO, NORTHERN SPAIN.
    ABSTRACT:
Abundant quantities of allogenic clastic sediments are often preserved within cave systems. Geomorphic and palaeoenvironmental data can be obtained from these deposits in a similar manner to those recorded from other sediment sinks. Sediment cores have been collected from several caves in the Matienzo region of northern Spain. Magnetic susceptibility profiles have been obtained for these samples in order to begin a reconstruction of the karstic evolution of the area. Four groups of caves are distinguished by their variation in susceptibility values. Provisional findings and discussions are presented along with planned future investigations.
    INTRODUCTION:
The Matienzo karst is located in the northern Spanish province of Cantabria, ( FIGURE 1 ). The region presents several examples of well developed karstic features including the 26km2 karst depression ( PLATE 1 ), after which the area is named and the numerous extensive cave systems that are found beneath the surrounding hillslopes. The depression appears to have evolved under assiduous karstic processes over an estimated minimum of 1.8 million years (Waltham, 1981.). Over one thousand cave entrances have been located and mapped in the area the longest of which, La Sistema de los Cuatro Valles, being over 41km long. The principal caves are shown in ( FIGURE 2 ). Many of the caves are phreatic in origin, (

    Abstract
    INTRODUCTION
The Black Hills of western South Dakota ( fig. 1 ) is experiencing increased urban development requiring an assessment of ground-water contamination potential. Detailed bedrock and surficial geologic mapping, in cooperation with the Lawrence County Planning Commission and the City of Spearfish, SD, will be useful for assessing aquifer-contamination potential by describing major lithologic characteristics, delineating surface recharge areas, and characterizing subsurface structural configuration. The maps will also be useful for depicting areas of potential landsliding, soil erodability, and subsidence due to solution of underground gypsum and anhydrite. The Black Hills comprise an asymmetric uplift, about 130 miles long and 60 miles wide. Erosion has exposed a core of Precambrian metamorphic rocks which are rimmed by shallow marine to nearshore-terrestrial sediments of Paleozoic and Mesozoic age which dip away from the center of the domal uplift (
