When are we going to learn that mass production did NOT achieve economies of scale. Many have shown that size most often leads to waste. Lots of waste. Much Asian innovation has focused on reducing that waste. The results speak for themselves, e.g., Toyota number two and soon to be number one in the global auto industry. back to features 'No vestige of a beginning, no prospect of an end.'(Hutton, 1785) As the nation makes ready the space behind the sofa in anticipation of David Tennant’s second series in the lead role of Dr Who , we look into the tenth Doctor, and find out about some other Scottish lords of time who have shaped our understanding of the age of the Earth and its place in the universe, and see how Scotland’s influence on the science of time is continuing today. In the forty-three years and ten incarnations of The Doctor, David Tennant is only the second Scottish actor to portray the eccentric adventurer (following Sylvester McCoy). Born in Bathgate in 1971, to a Church of Scotland minister and future moderator of the General Assembly, David grew up in Renfrewshire and was educated at Paisley Grammar School before attending the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in pursuit of his childhood dream of becoming an actor. As a boy, his passion for acting was partly fuelled by an ambition one day to play the lead in his favourite programme, Dr Who , an ambition he achieved in March 2005 when Christopher Eccleston’s brief stint at the helm of the TARDIS came to an end and David spoke his first line as his boyhood hero, “Hello! New teeth, that's weird.”

While executives of large Western companies and policy-makers of Western governments continue to view innovation through 20th century lenses, entrepreneurial companies in Asia are harnessing the opportunities of the flat world to pursue broader forms of innovation appropriate for the 21st century.
In the West, we still confuse invention with innovation. Even worse, we tend to focus narrowly on breakthrough technology or product invention that's what really gets the adrenaline going. Anything else is marginal and uninteresting.

Invention to Innovation: Online
One idea that I had about the online exhibit is that we could use it to play up the London connection (like the Bovie), more so than we were able to do with the physical exhibit, which included artefacts that we had difficulty tying to London. If the content of the online exhibit were the London-related case studies and other London-related content, this may be a good way to hit home the big idea we had about the spirit of ingenuity alive in London.
Another strength of our exhibit is the hard work that we put into research, including our oral history interviews and I think that with all the work we put into them (including the transcripts), clips from the interviews would be a strong addition to our online exhibit (accompanied by transcripts of the clip).

Invention for Innovation is a new Programme that brings together the work of several smaller programmes with a new investment stream. The aim of the programme is to help accelerate the take-up and use of proven new treatments and devices by the NHS. The programmes incorporated into the Invention for Innovation Programme are:
  • The New and Emerging Applications of Technology (NEAT) Programme, funding research into the use of new or emerging technologies to develop health care products and interventions that improve the quality, efficiency and effectiveness of health and social care. The Health Technology Devices (HTD) Programme, which funds research into new medical devices and technologies that will help people and patients towards independence of health and social care. The Challenge Fund for Innovation, a new Programme that promotes the uptake of health research and developments into use in the NHS. T he Department of Health's contribution to the piloting of Healthcare Technology Co-operatives, as announced in the recent Healthcare Industries Task Force Report.

Invention versus innovation
Will this post get Chris Masse to stop bothering me for a promised post on invention vs. innovation? Many people have written on this, a few recent links , not all precisely relevant to the question. One way of putting it is that six billion people generate a huge number of ideas, some number of which could be called inventions. Most are hopeless (the inventions; the people at least manage to survive for a time). Most of the rest are not actively pursued. The only way to test whether an invention is hopeless or useful is to attempt to deliver it at scale. So innovators (think of them as idea entrepreneurs, or whatever) both figure out which inventions are not hopeless and deliver the useful ones at scale. Innovators create all of the surplus, inventors do little more than breathe. The Myth Of Creativity article. Excerpt:
What society needs is not more creativity or suggestions for change but better ways to encourage people to focus on important issues, identify the most promising ideas, and tell the right people about them. But our deification of creativity gets in the way.

FRIDAY FUN: INVENTION vs INNOVATION
It has been a slow Friday for patent news (at least news that we find interesting) so we posit a question: is it invention or innovation that leads to the development of new and useful manufactures etc? The MIT Enterprise Technology Review writer Michael Schrage has thought about this a bit, and writes that there is " Much Ado about Invention" pointing to innovation, not invention, as the means by which products are brought to customers.
The introductory paragraph begins:
Samuel F. B. Morse didn?t invent the telegraph. Alexander Graham Bell didn?t invent the telephone. Thomas Edison invented neither the light bulb nor the movie camera. Guglielmo Marconi most assuredly didn?t invent radio. Neither Philo Farnsworth nor Vladimir Zworykin invented television. The integrated circuit?s provenance remains in simmering dispute between Jack Kilby fans and Robert Noyce supporters. As for the Internet and its ubiquitous browser, let?s just say that?as with these other technological ?breakthroughs?publicity,? ?priority,? and ?patent? are often mutually exclusive.
Now, for most intellectual property types the facts listed above are not all that surprising. We know that marketing deparments, history books, and especially media often get it wrong when it comes to who "invented" something. Some of our clients are really good marketeers marketing products that are perhaps marginally inventive while others with truly inventive ideas, completely fail at marketing the idea . Usually it is the nameless individual slugging it out in their basement or a chemist toiling many hours in a corporate or academic lab that is truly inventive. It is the brilliant marketeer, however, that often gets credited with the "invention" and their name becomes synonymous with the product or "innovation". Is this fair? Hell no. Is it logical? Hell probably (wasn't ready to be definitive on that point).
