Jump to: navigation search Immunology is a broad branch of biomedical science that covers the study of all aspects of the immune system in all organisms . It deals with, among other things, the physiological functioning of the immune system in states of both health and disease; malfunctions of the immune system in immunological disorders ( autoimmune diseases hypersensitivities immune deficiency allograft rejection); the physical, chemical and physiological characteristics of the components of the immune system in vitro in situ , and in vivo . Immunology has various applications in several disciplines of science, and as such is further divided.

Even before the concept of immunity (from immunis , Latin for "exempt") was developed, numerous early physicians characterised organs that would later prove to be part of the immune system. The key primary lymphoid organs of the immune system are thymus and bone marrow , and secondary lymphatic tissues such as spleen tonsils lymph vessels lymph nodes ... adenoids , and skin . When health conditions warrant, immune system organs including the thymus, spleen, portions of bone marrow, lymph nodes and secondary lymphatic tissues can be

Results from a computer-simulated ELISA are used for an epidemiological study to determine possible original HIV carriers. The ELISA Assay Understand how an ELISA is performed, learn what serum components are measured in an ELISA, and be able to explain how an ELISA test is used to detect sero-positivity for HIV or any other pathogen. Western Blotting Analysis Learn why a western blot is a confirmatory test for HIV positivity, what serum components are measured in an ELISA, and how a western blot is performed. Introduction to Immunology Learn the basics about the immune system. Antibody Structure Understand how an antibody's physical structure determines its interaction with antigen. HIV and AIDS Learn about HIV's interaction with the immune system and how current treatments interrupt the HIV lifecycle.

PART ONE: IMMUNOLOGY Immunology is the study of our protection from foreign macromolecules or invading organisms and our responses to them. These invaders include viruses, bacteria, protozoa or even larger parasites. In addition, we develop immune responses against our own proteins (and other molecules) in autoimmunity and against our own aberrant cells in tumor immunity. Our first line of defense against foreign organisms are barrier tissues such as the skin that stop the entry of organism into our bodies. If, however, these barrier layers are penetrated, the body contains cells that respond rapidly to the presence of the invader. These cells include macrophages and neutrophils that engulf foreign organisms and kill them without the need for antibodies. Immediate challenge also comes from soluble molecules that deprive the invading organism of essential nutrients (such as iron) and from certain molecules that are found on the surfaces of epithelia, in secretions (such as tears and saliva) and in the blood stream. This form of immunity is the innate or non-specific immune system that is continually ready to respond to invasion.

Immunoadjuvant effects of polyadenylic:polyuridylic acids through TLR3 and TLR7

Nucleic acids can activate innate immunity and function as potent immune adjuvants through pattern recognition receptors such as TLRS or RIG-I.
Polyadenylic:polyuridylic acids [poly(A:U)] has been used as immune adjuvant. Authors clearly described in this study that poly(A:U) activates both pDCs and cDCs through TLR7 and TLR3. Authors clearly demonstrate that poly(A:U) functions as in vivo immunoadjuvant for CD8+ T-cell activation mainly through TLR3 and TLR7.

Host defense is present in many forms. Overall, the Immune Response (IR) can be divided into two major classifications; humoral and cell-mediated. While these responses are not mutually exclusive, they provide distinctly different avenues for dealing with pathogenic organisms or altered host cells. These different responses will be discussed in more detail later. Immune Response Humoral Immunity Cell-mediated Immunity (Antibody) (Cytotoxicity) Some of these responses are specific, others are non-specific. This page will introduce host defense mechanisms by defining some commonly used terms and describing the specific cells and tissues involved in these immune responses. DEFINITIONS: Antigen (Ag): A molecule which elicits a specific immune response when introduced into an animal. More specifically, antigenic (immunogenic) substances are:
  • Structurally complex (proteins are usually very antigenic),
  • Accessible (the immune system must be able to contact the molecule), and
  • Foreign (not recognizable as "self"). Antibody (Ab): A glycoprotein produced in response to an antigen that is specific for the antigen and binds to it via non-covalent interactions. The term "immunoglobulin" is often used interchangeably with "antibody". We will use the term "immunoglobulin" to describe

Molecular and Cellular Biology of the Immune System
The Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Immunology at The University of Iowa was organized in 1993 as a group to bring together faculty from five departments that share a common interest in teaching students and performing research in Immunobiology. The Program offers classroom and research training leading to a Ph.D. degree which will prepare the student for a career in academic research, industry, or teaching. The learning experience is enhanced by an outstanding seminar series and journal clubs at which the most current immunology research is discussed. Approximately six students are admitted each year, with financial aid available to all those entering the Program. For additional information or to request an application, contact the Program administration. The program is funded by NIH "Predoctoral Training Program in Immunology" NIAID T32 AI007485. In recognition of the importance of immunology, the University of Washington established an independent Department of Immunology in 1989. This reflected the realization that immunologic disorders were of great importance in medicine and that the science of immunology, although sharing a conceptual base with biochemistry and microbiology, had developed a distinct intellectual focus, vocabulary, and technical armamentarium.
