  • Unprecedented image quality, resolution, coverage
  • Panchromatic and color images
  • Hundreds of full-resolution 20,000 x 40,000 pixel images
  • Color images up to 4,072 pixels wide, sub-meter scales
  • Thousands of high-resolution sub-scenes with 1 to 2 meters/pixel content
  • Hundreds of stereo pairs; production of Digital Elevation Models
  • Philosophy:
Launched in August of 2005, the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) is flying onboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) mission. HiRISE will investigate deposits and landforms resulting from geologic and climatic processes and assist in the evaluation of candidate landing sites. By combining very high resolution and signal-to-noise ratio with a large swath width, it is possible to image on a variety of scales down to 1 meter, a scale currently afforded only in glimpses by landers. HiRISE will offer such views over any selected region of Mars, providing a bridge between orbital remote sensing and landed missions. Stereo image pairs will be acquired over the highest-priority locations with a vertical precision of better than 25 cm per pixel.

About the ISIS Center
Welcome to the ISIS Center. The Imaging Science and Information Systems (ISIS) Center is a medical research and development organization at Georgetown University Medical Center that specializes in information and imaging technology for personal healthcare, public healthcare, and national biosecurity. ISIS was initially organized in the 1980s to develop research programs in data compression and to enhance digital imaging network systems (DINS, also known as Picture Archiving and Communication Systems [PACS] or Medical Diagnostic Imaging Support [MDIS]). During the 1990s, the primary areas of interest at ISIS were telemedicine, medical informatics, information assurance and computer-aided diagnosis. Research programs in surgical and rehabilitative robotics and in image-guided therapy were launched in the late 1990s. In the 2000s, ISIS added biosurveillance and associated information technology projects to its research and development agenda. Today, the ISIS Center is home to 85 faculty and staff whose activities can be grouped into four broad areas: global biosurveillance, medical informatics, imaging science, and medical robotics. This research team manages more than 50 research projects that are funded by various government agencies and commercial partners. Brief descriptions of the research activities pursued by the faculty and the senior members of the research team can be found below.

Cassini Orbiter Instruments CAPS ... ISS Nature's Canvas
Location, location, location. It's true for real estate and for taking the best pictures. The cameras with the best location in the solar system are more than 800 million miles from Earth, orbiting the ringed planet onboard the Cassini spacecraft. "We are the eyes of Cassini," says Dr. Carolyn Porco, Cassini Imaging Team leader and director of the Cassini Imaging Central Laboratory for OPerationS (CICLOPS), Space Science Institute, in Boulder, Colo. "Our cameras capture all the dramatic sights and vistas there are to see around Saturn. And through their imagery, they convey a sense of adventure, a sense of 'being there,' that we could otherwise only imagine." Officially named Imaging Science Subsystem (or ISS) the instrument consists of a wide-angle camera and a narrow-angle camera. The narrow-angle camera provides high-resolution images of targets of interest, while the wide-angle camera allows more extended spatial coverage at lower resolution. "What our cameras do is miraculous really. They convert the fleeting and indifferent fluctuations of electric and magnetic fields into powerful emotion," Porco says. "Who can fail to be moved when seeing some of our beautiful images? Certainly not I."
