Terrestrial plants may be grown with their roots in the mineral nutrient solution only or in an inert medium, such as perlite gravel or Rockwool . A variety of techniques exist. Plant physiology researchers discovered in the 19th century that plants absorb essential mineral nutrients as inorganic ions in water. In natural conditions, soil acts as a mineral nutrient reservoir but the soil itself is not essential to plant growth. When the mineral nutrients in the soil dissolve in water, plant roots are able to absorb them. When the required mineral nutrients are introduced into a plant's water supply artificially, soil is no longer required for the plant to thrive. Almost any terrestrial plant will grow with hydroponics, but some will do better than others. It is also very easy to do; the activity is often undertaken by very young children with such plants as watercress . Hydroponics is also a standard technique in biology research and teaching and a popular hobby.

Hydroponics Lighting Plants ... Climate Control Hydroponics: Why should I use Hydroponics? What are the different types of hydroponic systems available? What are the different types of hydroponic media? Common nutrient disorders in hydroponic systems ... How do I build my own hydroponic system? Why should I use Hydroponics? Hydroponic gardening is easy and fun once the concept and principles are understood. There are a few basic rules that must be followed to make a good hydroponic system productive. First, let's look at how and why hydroponics works. In the basic hydroponic system, the inert soilless medium contains essentially no nutrients of its own. All the nutrients are supplied by the nutrient (fertilizer) solution. This solution passes over the roots or floods around them at regular intervals, later draining off. The extra oxygen around the roots is able to speed the plants' uptake of nutrients. Plants grow faster hydroponically because they are able to assimilate nutrients faster. They are able to take in food as fast as they are able to utilize it. In soil, as in hydroponics, the roots absorb nutrients and water; even the best soil rarely contains as much oxygen as a soilless hydroponic medium.
Hydroponics works well for horticulturists who are willing to spend a few extra minutes a day in their garden. The garden requires extra maintenance. Plants grow faster and there are more things to check. In fact, some people do not like hydroponic gardening because plants grow too fast and require additional care.

Hydroponics Merle H. Jensen Department of Plant Sciences, University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ 85721 Hydroponics is a technology for growing plants in nutrient solutions (water containing fertilizers) with or without the use of an artificial medium (sand, gravel, vermiculite, rockwool, perlite, peatmoss. coir, or sawdust) to provide mechanical support. Liquid hydroponic systems have no other supporting medium for the plant roots : aggregate systems have a solid medium of support. Hydroponic systems are further categorized as open (i.e., once the nutrient solution is delivered to the plant roots, it is not reused) or closed (i.e., surplus solution is recovered, replenished, and recycled). In combination with greenhouses, it is high technology and capital-intensive. It is also highly productive, conservative of water and land, and protective of the environment. Yet for most of its employees, hydroponic culture requires only basic agriculture skills. Since regulating the aerial and root environment is a major concern in such agricultural systems, production takes place inside enclosures designed to control air and root temperatures, light, water, plant nutrition, and adverse climate. There are many types of controlled environment/hydroponic systems. Each component of controlled-environment agriculture (CEA) is of equal importance, whether it be the structural design, the environmental control, or the growing system. Not every system is cost-effective in every location. All too often, importance is given to only one or two of the key components, but the system fails due to lack of attention to any one of the components. If improper attention is given to the greenhouse structure and its environment, no hydroponic system will prove economically viable. While hydroponic and CEA are not synonymous, CEA usually accompanies hydroponics. Their potentials and problems are inextricable.

Drip irrigation provides consistently vigorous results, and small-size modular units are popular as an "entry-level" system. T hese systems are popular with hobbyists because they are effective and the easiest to maintain. Using either pots or rockwool cubes, plants are placed in a "flood tray" that periodically fills with nutrient solution and then drains back into the reservoir. Ebb and flow systems keep plants healthy even in high density planting situations. T he latest innovation in hydroponics provides unparalleled growth rates by continuously spraying the root zone with nutrient solution. This method provides optimal aeration and maximizes nutrient uptake for explosive growth. This is the system of choice among pros for optimizing output.

The name "Hydroponic" comes from Latin and means "Working Water". In reality hydroponics is the growing of plants without soil, or as The Professor likes to call it: "Dirtless Gardening" When most people think of hydroponics, they think of plants grown with their roots suspended directly into water with no growing medium. This is just one type of hydroponic gardening, known as N.F.T. (Nutrient Film Technique). There are several variations of N.F.T. used around the world and it is a very popular method of growing hydroponically. What most people don't realize is that there are literally hundreds of methods of hydroponic gardening. We explain the most common basic methods and the pro's and con's of each particular type below, along with a lot of great general information about hydroponics. WHY DOES HYDROPONICS WORK SO WELL? That's simply, if you give a plant exactly what it needs, when it needs it, in the amount that it needs it in, the plant will be as healthy as is genetically possible. With hydroponics, this is an easy task, in the soil it can be almost impossible.

    Introduction
Hydroponics is often defined as "the cultivation of plants in water." Research has since determined that many different aggregates or media will support plant growth; therefore, the definition of hydroponics has been broadened to read "the cultivation of plants without soil." Growers all over the world are using hydroponic techniques due to the lack of a large water supply or fertile farmland. Home gardeners have used hydroponics on a smaller scale to grow fresh vegetables year round and to grow plants in smaller spaces, such as an apartment or balcony. Greenhouses and nurseries grow their plants in a soilless, peat- or bark-based growing mix. The nutrients then are applied to the growing mix through the water supply. Therefore, this is also a type of hydroponics. Soilless gardening offers many advantages to the home gardener. Since a sterile medium is used, there are no weeds to remove, and soil-borne pests and diseases are minimized, if not eliminated completely. Properly grown hydroponic plants also are healthier and more vigorous because all of the necessary growth elements are readily available. The plants can mature faster, yielding an earlier harvest of vegetable and flower crops. Hydroponic gardens use less space since the roots do not have to spread out in search of food and water. This small space requirement makes hydroponics ideal for home gardeners, and it makes better use of greenhouse space. The big advantage to hydroponics is the ability to automate the entire system with a timer. Automation reduces the actual time it takes to maintain plant growth requirements. Automation also provides flexibility to the gardener as one can be gone for long periods of time without having to worry about watering the plants.

18. Hydroponics
Homegrown hydroponics gardening kits; everything you need (except the water) to cultivate plants without soil using only nutrientenriched water.
http://www.hydroponics-growing-systems.com/
Hydroponics
Quite simply, hydroponics is the art and science of cultivating plants without soil. Just before the Second World War, scientists utilized hydroponics to grow plants quite successfully without soil using only nutrient-enriched water. Sometimes sand, gravel or some other inert material (commonly referred to as the "growing medium") was incorporated just to anchor the plant's root system. Since then, hydroponics growing has followed a natural evolution from farms to greenhouses to homegrown. Although Holland may have a distinguished reputation for hydroponics marijuana , Holland remains the leader in using hydroponics extensively for commercial food products. Gardening with hydroponics is a low maintenance, efficient way to cultivate and very easy for beginners to learn. It involves doing routine checks on pH levels, topping up on water levels, changing hydroponics nutrients every 7 -12 days and preferably using a timer to automatically turn the garden lights on and off.

Welcome, dear friend!
We here at Foothill Hydroponics have been providing hydro garden systems, nutrients, supplies and guidance for Hydroponic gardeners since 1961. We introduced our advanced Hydroponic liquid nutrient system in 1984. Originally, Xtra Edge was a 3-part system with Grow / Bloom / Micro components. We introduced a Hard Water Micro in 1998, as we saw many customers with a slight lack of Potassium and an excess of Calcium when mixed with hard water, which is prevalent in the Southwest. The Hard Water Micro formula contains the highest concentration of Potassium of any liquid Hydroponic formula. Xtra Edge HW Micro also has the most Fulvic acid of any Hydroponic nutrient concentrate, a full 0.5%. This increases nutrient absorption and helps prevent nutrient lock up in hard water. Hydroponic gardeners who follow our advanced nutrient regimen report increased yields in most cases. We also offer a complete line of specialty dry Hydroponic nutrient concentrates, which include all trace elements in the correct proportions.
We continue to help the film industry with Hydroponics systems, and with living plants for background effects. In fact we supplied Hydroponic / Aeroponic systems for Minority Report, Star Trek DS9, and Seaquest DSV just to name a few.
