WRCS Profile Page
Current News Notes:
WRCS has collected over two dozen software programs that represent a wide cross-section of hydrologic and hydraulic modeling utilities developed for various applications in water resources engineering.
New Commercial Programs:
  • Aquadyn Hydrodynamic Simulation Package
AquaDyn allows the complete description and analysis of hydrodynamic conditions (e.g., flow rates and water levels) of open channels such as rivers, lakes, or estuaries.
    HYDRONET™
is a powerful DOS based application that solves for the steady-state pressures and flows throughout a fluid conveyance network. HYDROFLO for Windows '95/'98/NT is a tool for the analysis of smaller fluid conveyance systems consisting of one source and one discharge and up to 10 pumps operating in parallel or series. The steady-state pressures and flows for the system are determined.
Channel Design
  • RIPRAP Design System - An easy-to-use design tool for streambank protection. The RIPRAP Design System determines sizing, layer thickness and gradation of rock riprap to protect streams from scour utilizing seven different methods.

Examples of Hydrology AMLs for ArcInfo 7.0
Creating a Watershed Base Map
Creates a point coverage of flow gages within a specified watershed or set of watersheds and attaches attribute data from input ascii files to that coverage. Also projects the created coverage out of geographic coordinates.
Digital Line Graphs
Describes the process of downloading Digital Line Graph (DLG) data from CDROM and preparing it for regional analysis within the confines of a particular hydrologic or political boundary.
Drainage Path Delineation
Must be run subsequent to Watershed Delineation AML (see below). Delineates drainage paths to subwatershed outlet points within a watershed, given a "filled" grid for a particular area or region of interest.
Inland Catchments
Addresses the problem of inland catchments with Digital Elevation Models, during watershed delineation. Inland catchments constitute closed hydrologic systems that do not drain to the ocean, as most watersheds. In inland catchments, water drains towards an inland pour point located within the basin, and not towards the basin border, which usually occurs.
Land Use/Land Cover Files
NOT AN AML. Describes the process of accessing the USGS Land Use/Land Cover (LULC) Files from various sources and preparing the data for analysis with other data coverages within a particular hydrologic or political region.

Our research activities cover a broad range of water resource issues:
  • We assess the impacts of climate change, hydropower, and irrigation on watershed health. We measure and predict the quantity of precipitation that infiltrates the soil surface and eventually recharges the aquifer. We measure and predict the movement of fluids, gases, and contaminants through the soil and vadose zone above the water table. We measure and predict the movement of groundwater and the transport of contaminants to streams and rivers, as well as to and from wells used for irrigation or remediation activities. We analyze complex problems involving the impacts of seasonal water availability, temperature, suspended sediment, and dissolved gases in rivers systems, especially the impacts of dams and their operation.
Our solutions to problems can range from the simple (and quick!) to the sophisticated. Which solution we use will depend on your problem as well as your needs and resources.

The USA Soil Conservation Service (now called the Natural Resources Conservation Service), division of the USDA (USA Department of Agriculture) has worked for decades developing equations and conducting experiments to determine reliable models for predicting peak discharge from storm events. Relying upon extensive research, Technical Release 55 (TR-55: SCS, 1986) presents a methodical and reliable approach to predicting peak discharge due to a 24-hr storm event. (This web page uses TR-55 and SCS (1986) interchangeably; they are the same document.) TR-55 is valid for watersheds that have a time of concentration from 0.1 to 10 hr. Such watersheds are considered small. Our calculation uses the equations and graphs (coded into equations) in TR-55 chapters 1 thru 4 to solve for peak discharge. Chapter 5 (titled Tabular Hydrograph Method) also solves for peak discharge but models more complicated watersheds - watersheds that have several main channels requiring channel hydrograph routing techniques. Hydrograph routing software is more suitable for stand-alone computer programs rather than for programs that run from the world wide web.

Water Plays a major role in providing habitat and shaping the landscape of the national parks. The Hydrology Program provides technical and policy advice to parks on the management of hydrologic conditions and processes. Program staff help address hydrologic issues such as ground-water protection and development, floodplain management, hydrologic monitoring, and fluvial geomorphology, as well as watershed, stream and riparian area condition management and restoration. Other service areas include hydrologic modeling and assistance in the technical aspects of environmental regulation and compliance. The Water Operations Branch (WOB) Hydrology Program provides technical assistance to parks in the following areas:
The WOB Hydrology Program is designed to support headquarters, regions, Denver Service Center, and park-based managers and resource professionals by: providing national consistency in water related programs; providing specialized analytical or technology support to field-based professionals; assuming responsibility for special studies requiring specialized technical skills or dealing with significant issues of multi-park, regional, or national scope; and assisting in integrating principles of good science with complex policy issues.
