Remember, hydrogeologists use effective porosity because this value better represents water flowing through an aquifer under the forces of gravity.

Basic Hydrogeology
Aquifer - "A water-bearing layer of rock, or of unconsolidated sediments, that will yield water in a usable quantity to a well or spring."
Confining Bed - "A layer of rock, or of unconsolidated sediments, that retards the movement of water in and out of an aquifer and possesses a very low hydraulic conductivity."
From these definitions, all rocks can be thought of as either aquifers or confining beds. Moreover, aquifers are often considered to be unconfined or confined.
An aquifer is considered unconfined if water only partially fills the aquifer materials and water freely rises and declines along the unsaturated/saturated zone boundary. These unconfined aquifers are often referred to as water-table aquifers and wells that are opened to these unconfined aquifers indicates the position of the water-table.
A confined aquifer is generally defined when water completely fills the aquifer materials and is overlain by a confining bed. A common term for a confined aquifer is an artesian aquifer. The water level from a well that permits water solely from a confined aquifer to enter the well will stand at some point above the top of the confined aquifer but not necessarily above the land surface. The water level in a well open to a specific confined aquifer stands at the level of the potentiometric surface. If the potentiometric surface is above land, the well is often considered as a free-flowing artesian well.

For Students in the Hydrogeology Certificate Program. The Program
UMASS Boston offers a nationally unique undergraduate certificate program in Hydrogeology. The certificate, administered through the Department of Earth and Geographic Sciences, consists of a sequence of seven courses which, taken as a whole, provide the student with a comprehensive understanding of the field of hydrogeology, from theory to practice, with application to issues of water supply, water quality, and water resource management.
Who Should Enroll
The program is open to all undergraduates at the University of Massachusetts Boston, as well as to non-degree-seeking students or working professionals who are interested in obtaining an undergraduate-level certificate of study in the field of hydrogeology. Earth and Geographic Sciences' majors may elect the program, but only three of the courses taken may count as credit toward the major degree.
Application Procedures
Application forms for the program are available from the Earth and Geographic Sciences Department. Students admitted to the program should consult with the program director before planning a course of study.

Ground water is the largest and most readily available source of potable water in Florida. Hydrogeology is the study of ground water with emphasis given to its chemistry, modes of movement, and relation to the geologic environment. Hydrogeology integrates geology, hydrology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, biology, and engineering to understand the occurrence and movement of water in the complex subsurface environment. Water-bearing sedimentary rocks in Florida can generally be divided into two types: siliciclastics (sands, silts, clays) or carbonates (limestone and dolostone). All of these rocks, no matter how "hard" or solid they appear, contain some voids or pores, which may contain water. Two properties that are common to all these rocks, and which control the movement of their ground water, are porosity and permeability. Porosity and permeability are intimately related. Porosity refers to the pores themselves, while permeability is a measure of a rock's ability to allow fluids to move through its pores. For a rock to be permeable, its pores must be interconnected so that water can move freely.

This figure shows the stratigraphic units underlying the Hanford Site. The geologic and hydrogeologic columns in the figure show differences in stratigraphy. The geologic column on the right defines the lithostratigraphic units, based on mapping and physical properties of the sediments, modified from BHI-00184. The hydrogeologic column on the left defines hydrostratigraphic units based on hydraulic properties (PNL-8971). Click for a larger image The Hanford Site lies in the Columbia Plateau, a broad plain situated between the Cascade Range to the west and the Rocky Mountains to the east. The Columbia Plateau was formed by a thick sequence of volcanic basalt flows, called the Columbia River Basalt Group, that erupted from fissures in north-central and northeastern Oregon, eastern Washington, and western Idaho. Over time, these basalt formations have been folded and faulted, creating a series of basins and ridges. The basalt is exposed on the ridges, and the basins have been subsequently filled by thick sedimentary deposits. The Hanford Site lies within one of the larger basins, known as the Pasco Basin.

Definition of Discipline Activities: Hydrogeology
The hydrogeology discipline involves field investigations and reviews of the following typical activities: a) analysis and assessment of subsurface conditions by geotechnical drilling , geophysical surveys or other subsurface sampling methods,
b) evaluation and determination of the direction and rate of ground-water flow,
c) modeling of contaminant fate and transport in shallow, subsurface sediments and ground-water systems,
d) assessment of contaminant impact on ground- water supplies
e) evaluation and assessment of human exposure and risk assessment relating to contaminated soil and ground water,
f) development and assessment of ground-water remediation system design, operation and effectiveness, g) forensic investigations, such as in evaluating likely sources causing illiness or death to humans and animals, and h) a number of other aspects in the field of hydrogeology ( here Any of the above activities, among others, can be involved in litigation. Most involve some type of forensic investigation. The first consideration is whether inappropriate or misrepresented data or methods are involved that can form the basis of litigation involving activities conducted within the discipline of hydrogeology. In some cases, unqualified individuals do not have appropriate training and experience or the associated professional certifications and/or state licenses. Many of these activities also involve an assessment of
