Introduction Did you know that hurricanes are the largest most destructive storms on Earth? Hurricanes are also called typhoons and tropical cyclones in other parts of the world, but they are basically the same type of storm. In addition to strong winds that may damage homes and injure people, hurricanes can produce tornadoes, severe flooding and beach erosion.  Most people who lose their lives during hurricanes live on the coast and are killed by a large sheet of ocean water moved by the hurricane called storm surge.  Our ability to monitor and forecast hurricanes has improved greatly because of satellite technology and scientists who volunteer to fly directly into the storms to take measurements and study them.  By studying the information sent back by Air Force and NOAA Hurricane Hunter planes, we can measure how strong a hurricane is and make a good estimate of what direction it may move in. Through accurate forecasts and warnings, the staff of NOAA's National Hurricane Center have probably saved thousands of lives. People living in areas that are likely to be hit by a hurricane usually get advanced warning of a day or two and then have enough time to prepare for these huge powerful storms before they strike.

What are Hurricanes?
Most people associate twisters with tornadoes, but in fact tropical twisters come from hurricanes. Hurricanes are what scientists call "strong Tropical Cyclones". They are formed when large areas of the ocean become heated, and the air pressure over that area drops. This causes thunderstorms and strong surface winds. Cyclones develop over tropical or sub-tropical waters (for example, in the Atlantic off the coast of Africa, or in the Pacific). As they travel long distances gathering energy from the ocean, they are likely to be classified as strong Tropical Cyclones. When the winds of a tropical storm reach 74 mph, then the storm is classified as a hurricane. One of NASA's most important missions is to develop an understanding of the total Earth system and study the effects of natural and human- induced changes on the global environment. To achieve these goals, NASA has developed satellites and ground programs which study and monitor hurricanes and other climatic events. ESE Kids Only Home ESE Homepage NASA

Posted: 10:29 AM 01 January 2008 5 Comments Add Comment 08:59 PM 15-Jan EDT And this year is yet another year, after two relatively inactive years (for US landfalls) anyway, will we have another? Hopefully so.
2007 was a very active year despite the lack of landfalls, a December Storm, two landfalling Category 5 systems in Mexico and Central America, and a general west west west motion. Hurricane Humberto, a last minute hurricane, made landfall southwest of Port Arthur, Texas, and was the only landfalling US hurricane of the season.
There was a post season storm, Olga, that crossed Puerto Rico, and fell apart when eventually the remnants entered the gulf and over Florida causing a few Tornadoes.

    74. How To Make A Pat O'Brien's Hurricane
Pat O Briens is the ultimate place to have fun in New Orleans, Cancun or Orlando. Home of the world famous Hurricane.
    http://www.patobriens.com/hurricane.html
The Original Pat O'Brien's Hurricane A visit to Pat O'Brien's is not complete without a world-famous Hurricane! How do you make a Hurricane? Served in a Pat O'Brien's logo glass and garnished with an orange slice and a cherry, the fruity red concoction was created during World War II when liquor such as whiskey was in low supply. In order to purchase just one case of these liquors, liquor salesmen forced bar owners to purchase as much as 50 cases of rum, which was plentiful. In an effort to use the abundance of rum that Pat O'Brien's acquired, the recipe for the Hurricane evolved with the help of an eager liquor salesman. The name came soon after when a glass shaped like a hurricane lamp was used to serve the fruity rum cocktail. The Pat O'Brien's Hurricane glass is one of the most sought-after souvenirs in New Orleans. Many New Orleanians have one or more in their possession, and as for what they do with those glasses once they get home, one Pat O'Brien's patron pointed out, "A Pat O's Hurricane glass can hold exactly $10.00 in pennies." Excerpted from article written by Jennifer Lange, December 1995.

Expert Assessments ... NOAA PRESS RELEASE NOAA: 2007 Atlantic Hurricane Season Outlook Update Issued: 9 August 2007 Realtime monitoring of tropical Atlantic conditions
Realtime monitoring of tropical East Pacific conditions
SUMMARY NOAA is predicting a very high likelihood (85% chance) of an above-normal 2007 Atlantic hurricane season , a 10% chance of a near-normal season, and only a 5% chance of a below-normal season, according to a consensus of scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Climate Prediction Center, National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Research Division, and Hydrometeorological Prediction Center. The outlook calls for an even higher probability of an above-normal season than was predicted in May (75%), and reiterates the expectation for a sharp increase in activity from the near-normal season observed last year. The 2007 season is expected to become the tenth above-normal season since the current active hurricane era began twelve years ago (in 1995). See NOAA’s definitions of above-, near-, and below-normal seasons.

    http://asterix.ednet.lsu.edu/~edtech/webquest/canequest.htm
HURRICANE WEB QUEST WELCOME TASK RESOURCES PROCEDURE ... CONCLUSION Welcome to the Hurricane Web Quest. What kinds of weather conditions do we who live in South have to endure? Well, every year around April 1st, Mother Nature's weather patterns feel the need to adapt to warmer weather, and we here in the Southern United States must roll with her changing moods. Part of what we face comes in the form of a weather pattern known as a hurricane. These systems begin either in the Atlantic Ocean or the Gulf of Mexico, and can, over time, create quite a stir to not only coastal communities, but to many other states in its path as well. To know exactly how these systems act, we must first know how they are "born," so to speak. A hurricane goes through its own life cycle not much different than that of a person. To best understand this concept, we want you to take on the exciting task of assuming the role of the storm! In being the hurricane, you will describe your life in detail from a first-hand account! An "hurricanography", if you will. BACK TO TOP
