Trailhead Teacher's Resources Start Field Trip A hurricane is a type of tropical cyclone that sustains winds of 74 miles per hour and greater. Hurricanes occur in the tropical regions of the world in 7 distinct basins, and are called Hurricanes in the Carribean, Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico, and eastern Pacific, Typhoons in the western Pacific, and Cyclones in the Indian Ocean. A hurricane "watch" is issued when the threat of storm conditions is expected between 24-36 hours. A "warning" is issued when the storm is expected within 24 hours or less. Objectives
  • Students will learn what a hurricane is, and how and where they are formed. Students will learn how to prepare for a hurricane and what to do in the event of a storm. Students will be taken to some of the best hurricane resources available on the Web where they can research and retrieve all kinds of storm data including historical storms, careers, tracking instruments, current weather maps, and much more.

    All About Hurricanes
A hurricane is a tropical cyclone, which in meteorological terms, is a storm system with a closed circulation around a center of low pressure that is fueled when moist air rises, condenses and releases heat. Producing very high winds and torrential rain, hurricanes can be catastrophic for living populations. However, hurricanes also play an important role in relieving sustained droughts and maintaining equilibrium in the environment. Hurricanes often begin as tropical storms, strengthening according to water temperature. Strong wind damage and water damage from flooding and storm surge from hurricanes can wreak havoc on regions all over the world. Learn more about hurricanes with the latest news articles, interactive features and more at LiveScience.com. Find out the answers to your most pressing questions about hurricanes. Hurricanes are severe tropical storms that form in the southern Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, and in the eastern Pacific Ocean. Scientists can now predict hurricanes, but people who live in coastal communities should plan what they will do if they are told to evacuate.
    Prepare for Hurricanes
    • Get a kit of emergency supplies and prepare a portable kit in case you have to evacuate. Familiarize yourself with the terms that are used to identify a hurricane.
      • A hurricane watch means a hurricane is possible in your area. Be prepared to evacuate. Monitor local radio and television news outlets or listen to NOAA Weather Radio for the latest developments. A hurricane warning is when a hurricane is expected in your area. If local authorities advise you to evacuate, leave immediately.

Butterfly Links Hurricane Destructiveness fact sheet (low resolution300 KB PDF) Hurricane Destructiveness fact sheet (high resolution2.5 MB PDF) Because most global warming emissions remain in the atmosphere for decades or centuries, the energy choices we make today greatly influence the climate our children and grandchildren inherit. We have the technology to increase energy efficiency, significantly reduce these emissions from our energy and land use, and secure a high quality of life for future generations. We must act now to reduce dangerous consequences. Hurricanes, typhoons, and cyclones have always bedeviled coasts, but global warming may be making matters worse. Sea level is rising and will continue to rise as oceans warm and glaciers melt. Rising sea level means higher storm surges, even from relatively minor storms, which increases coastal flooding and subsequent storm damage along coasts. In addition, the associated heavy rains can extend hundreds of miles inland, further increasing the risk of flooding.
In a tropical cyclone, air rotates inward to the center (or eye), then rises to higher altitudes. As warm, moist air rises, the air cools and condenses to rain, releasing heat. This cycle of evaporation and condensation powers the storm. Adapted from a figure courtesy of NOAA.
