Genetics and Human Behaviour: the Ethical Context
Introduction
Researchers in the field of behavioural genetics are examining how genes and the environment influence human behavioural traits such as aggression, anxiety, homosexuality, intelligence, novelty-seeking and anti-social behaviour. Much of the research focuses on behavioural characteristics that we all share to varying degrees, rather than traits that are considered to be abnormal, unhealthy or pathological. This is a complicated and often controversial area of genetic research. As well as concerns about the validity of the scientific methodologies involved, there are many ethical, legal, social and practical implications. These include concerns about the effects of developing genetic tests for normal behavioural traits and the way in which such information could be used to try to predict, change or select such traits. The scope of the Council’s 1993 Report Genetic screening: ethical issues was limited to serious diseases. In focusing on the major disorders, the scope of the 1998 Report on

Video Time Index Human Genetics: Our Past and Our Future Play Now Email to a Friend SPEAKER: David Altshuler Founding Member, and Director of the Program in Medical and Population Genetics, Broad Institute Associate Professor, Genetics and Medicine, Harvard Medical School ABOUT THE LECTURE: Will genomics vanquish our most common diseases, or create a society based on vile eugenics – or both? David Altshuler outlines these possibilities in his informal talk and conversation at the MIT Museum. Altshuler is a self-described optimist, and sees promise in current genetic research that attempts to pinpoint why some people develop diseases like adult-onset diabetes or schizophrenia. If we can identify the precise mechanisms inside cells that go haywire in individuals with an inherited predisposition to a certain disease, then it may be possible to design drugs much more accurately. “We’re searching for a culprit who committed a crime, where the culprit is a mutation in a DNA sequence that made somebody get sick …. And scientists are the detectives CGI: Crime Gene Investigators,” says Altshuler.

Mammalian Genotyping Service
Welcome!
The Mammalian Genoytping Service (MGS) completed a 12 year long contract (NO1-HV-48141) in December, 2006. This service was established under the direction of Dr. Jim Weber, primarily to assist in linkage mapping of genes which cause or influence disease in humans and other model systems. Genotyping for the MGS Service is carried out by using short tandem repeat polymorphisms (STRP's), also known as microsatellite markers. These markers were originally identified at Marshfield Clinic by Dr. Weber (Weber 1990 Genomics). Human linkage maps were then developed under this contract by Karl Broman and screening sets created, which have been used by hundreds of investigators around the world to map genes responsible for disease as well as for seminal population studies (Rosenberg). Over the years, this service has facilitated the identification of hundreds of genes including the gene and linkage regions for cystic fibrosis, the Framingham Heart Study and the Jackson Heart Study , as well as many other heart, lung, blood, sleep related disorders.

http://genetics.med.harvard.edu/
Welcome to the Department of Genetics, Harvard Medical School. Reflecting the breadth of the field itself, the Department of Genetics consists of faculty working on diverse problems using a variety of approaches and model organisms, unified in their focus on the genome as an organizing principle for understanding biological phenomena. Genetics is not perceived simply as a subject, but rather as a way of viewing and approaching biological phenomenon. While the range of current efforts can best be appreciated by reading the research interests of individual faculty the scope of the work conducted in the Department includes (but is by no means limited to) human genetics of both single gene disorders and complex traits, development of genomic technology, cancer biology, developmental biology, signal transduction, cell biological problems, stem cell biology, computational genetics, immunology, synthetic biology, epigenetics, evolutionary biology, and plant biology. The mission of the Department encompasses research and education while serving as a focal point for drawing together and integrating basic and clinical genetic efforts conducted across the University and its affiliated hospitals. The Department of Genetics is strongly committed to supporting its current community of faculty, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students and to securing the best new scientists, setting its sight on new research opportunities in the future.

Research advances in genetics have the potential to revolutionize the practice of medicine. But to reach that goal, laboratory scientists and clinical researchers must work together to make the transition from scientific discovery to clinical practice. At the University of Michigan, the Center for Genetics in Health and Medicine (CGHM) was established to help facilitate this transition. Its mission is to foster collaboration among scientists and clinicians who are conducting research that crosses the boundary between the science of genetics and the practice of medicine.
