We are the UK Government's advisory body on new developments in human genetics and how they impact on individual lives. We give the Government advice on human genetics with a particular focus on the social, ethical and legal issues. One of our key roles is to promote debate and to listen to what the public and our stakeholders have to say. We are committed to openness and transparency. The Commission is made up of twenty-two members including experts in genetics, ethics, law and consumer affairs. The acting Chair is Sir John Sulston. We also have a Consultative Panel of people who have direct experience of living with genetic disorders and who act as a sounding board for our reports and recommendations.

CURRENT CAMPAIGNS The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill - Going through Parliament now. Stop GM Embryos Campaign What is Human Genetics Alert? W e are currently undergoing a technological revolution in genetics. It is widely expected that these changes will bring major health benefits. However, the human genetics revolution also raises profound social and ethical problems, including a possible resurgence of eugenics. There is a widespread concern that genetics is running far ahead of society's ability to cope with these issues. Human Genetics Alert (HGA) is an independent watchdog group based in London, UK, and is funded by a leading British charity. We are not opposed to genetic research. However, we are opposed to some developments, such as genetic discrimination, cloning and inheritable ('germ line') genetic engineering of human beings.
    We believe:
    • Genetic research should be driven by genuine need rather than commercial imperatives or social and cultural prejudices
    • Genetic technologies must be applied in away which does not exacerbate existing social inequalities, or create new ones

The Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics (WTCHG) was established in 1994 to undertake research into the genetic basis of common diseases. Since June 1999 the Centre has been located in the Henry Wellcome Building of Genomic Medicine, University of Oxford. The scientific objective of the Centre is to explore all aspects of the genetic susceptibility of disease including the localisation of genes involved in common diseases, characterisation of the variants responsible for susceptibility, the understanding of how these DNA variants may contribute to risk of disease in the population and finally, how such genetic factors contribute biologically to a disease process. The Centre houses multi-disciplinary research teams in human genetics, functional genomics, bioinformatics, statistical genetics and structural biology. http://www.biologycorner.com/bio4/human.html
Human Genetics Webquest Introduction There are thousands of genetic disorders that affect humans, some of which can have profound effects on a person's quality of life. Genetic disorders are passed from parents to offspring in the genetic code, and in some cases, a person may be a carrier for a disease and pass it to their children without knowing. Because genetic diseases are usually caused by errors or mutations in the genetic code, it is extremely difficult to cure the condition, and in most cases, doctors can only treat the symptoms. In this webquest, you will explore a genetic disease and present a short presentation to the class about the disease you researched. Task Step 1: Form your group, groups can have one to four members. Step 2: Choose which disease you will research. There are many genetic diseases to choose from, and a list of links that you can use to explore the known human genetic diseases. A word of caution though, some of the sites include diseases that are questionable whether there's a genetic component - diseases like cancer, or mental health diseases are iffy. If you choose something not on the list below, have your choice approved before proceeding. Some examples of genetic diseases are: Sickle-Cell Disease
    Hemophilia
    albinism
    Phenylketonuria
    Cystic Fibrosis
    Tay Sachs Disease
    colorblindness
    Adrenoleukodystrophy (Lorenzo's Oil)
    Herditary Deafness
