We also encourage students to take advantage of exciting opportunities for interdisciplinary work on the Bloomington campus. In addition to the strengths of the department, Indiana University boasts strong research resources, such as the Lilly Library of rare books, as well as many active scholars in other departments working in such areas as the history of medicine, logic, cognitive science, ancient musicology, history and philosophy of mathematics, sociology, library science, journalism, and medieval studies. HPS enjoys formal and/or informal connections with most of these people and departments.

an Overview of its History, Culture and Science
Dedicated to the memory of Gordan Lederer Dear reader,
When you meet a new friend or colleague, you are necessarily confronted with his cultural and historical background, peculiarities of his own, that are sometimes difficult to conceive. Having this in mind, we believe you will understand our wish to give you a better insight into what could be called a Croatian cultural heritage, at least in a rapid and sketchy way. The connections with other European cultures are, as you will see, deep and longstanding. We shall also try to intersperse this hypertext with some interesting facts by which Croatia is recognizable. In short, we start by describing an extremely complex and interesting entity, unique in Europe - the Republic of Croatia, or in Croatian - Republika Hrvatska HR

The History of Science Fiction:
a Chronological Survey
Science fiction is a subcategory of a broad range of fiction that can be best described as literature of the fantastic. Other literatures of the fantastic include horror and fantasy. Miriam Allen de Ford has noted: "Science fiction deals with improbable possibilities, fantasy with plausible impossibilities." Science fiction has many progenitors in literature, namely:
  • Mythical adventures such as The Odyssey Voyages of discovery Stories of ideal societies such as Thomas More's Utopia
But science fiction adds technological imagery and is generally considered to attempt an extrapolation into the future of known concepts of science and technology. We can divide the development of science fiction as literature into the following overlapping stages: Prehistory from the beginnings of literature to the development of the scientific method c. 1600 Pioneers and Kissing Cousins (1814-1890): dominated by the gothic strain of the Romantic as embodied by Shelley, Hawthorne, and Poe
