  • Research About the Centre The QMUL Particle Physics Research Centre, part of the Department of Physics, is active in leading international experiments, focused either on discovery and identification of new particles, or on testing the quantitative features of globally unifying theories. Queen Mary is involved in two experiments (H1 and BaBar) currently carrying out physics analyses, one (ATLAS) moving from construction to first physics in 2008, with future upgrades already planned, and one (T2K) under construction and planning to start to take data in 2009. We also have a substantial involvement with the development of GridPP.

They rely on experiments ranging from huge particle accelerators, to deep underground laboratories, to orbiting satellites, to particle simulations using the most powerful computers. The next generation of such experiments is poised to unlock some of the deepest questions such as why is the Universe so large, how did it begin and how will it end? What is the nature of dark matter and structure in the Universe? What is the origin of particle masses? Can the forces of nature be unified? Are there extra space dimensions? Why are there three families of matter particles? Can the equations describing the strong interaction be cracked?

Inverted Pendulum as part of a Chaos experiment developed by Prof. Bergmann for Senior Laboratory course. When driven at ten times the resonant frequency and at sufficient amplitude, the pendulum bob will oscillate in the inverted position above the pivot point (as shown). By approaching a critical amplitude from above, the oscillation frequency in the inverted position approaches zero, like the critical slow down in a second order phase transition.
