BACKGROUND Herpetology at Marshall began in the 1930's under the direction of Dr. N. Bayard Green. Since then, herpetology in WV has become widely known and studied due to the rich diversity of amphibians and reptiles in the region. Of the group, salamanders are the most diverse, with 34 species in the area. Dr. Thomas K. Pauley has conducted numerous herpetological studies since the 1960's, focusing on research in WV. This site is designed to provide information about the herpetofauna in WV and the field studies and research of Dr. Pauley and his graduate students.

  • Acanthal ridges Ridges (with light lines) extending from the eyes to the nostrils in members of the species Gyrinophilus porphyriticus (spring salamanders). Anal plate The scale or scales directly covering the cloaca of a snake. This plate may be single (one scale) or divided along the mid-line into two scales. Bridge The part of the shell between the front and hind legs connecting the upper and lower halves of the shell. Carapace The upper half of a turtle shell. Costal grooves The grooves present along the sides of the bodies of many salamanders. When counting them for identification purposes, include only those between the front legs and the hind legs. Dorsolateral ridge Lines or folds of skin (usually gold colored) along the upper sides of some frogs in the family Ranidae. Intercalary cartilage An extra piece of cartilage in the toes of members of the Hylidae (tree frog) family. It causes the end of the toes to have a "stepped-down" appearance.

Herpetology The Department of Herpetology focuses on the study of amphibians and reptiles. Resources are available to scientists to help better understand amphibian and reptile biology and conserve species when their existence is threatened. The great diversity of amphibian and reptile species is preserved for scientific research in the form of alcohol-preserved and skeletal specimens. The herpetology collection holds over 70,000 catalogued individuals dating back to the 1890s. Over 57% of the collection comes from California and Baja California, making it one of the largest resources for this area. The collection is well represented with specimens from throughout the southwest United States, northwest Mexico, and islands worldwide. All cataloged specimens are computer databased which allows for any combination of taxonomic and geographic records to be searched. We are supported, in part, by the Laurence M. and Grace G. Klauber Endowment for Herpetology. The Curator is Bradford Hollingsworth, Ph.D. Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteers are needed. Get experience with various aspects of herpetological research, collections care, databasing, literature compilation, and natural history. Immediate help is needed to complete the ongoing renovation of the collection. In the process, volunteers gain valuable experience in the identification of amphibian and reptile species, learning geographic distributions, and getting exposure to the science of systematics. Anyone interested in helping in this or any other department should talk to our Director of Volunteers at 619.255.0245.

Collections
The herpetological collection at the Burke Museum contains 4,200 specimens of amphibians and reptiles, primarily from the Pacific Northwest; it is particularly strong in amphibians and garter snakes from this area. The more than 2,200 specimens in the cataloged collection are mostly forest-dwelling amphibians from Western Washington obtained during wildlife studies in the 1980s and early 1990s. About half the uncataloged material is garter snakes collected by William Hebard during the mid-1900s. The collection consists largely of alcohol-reserved spacimens with a small number of photographs and skeletons. Learn about the history of the herpetological collection People The herpetological collection is maintained by a volunteer curator. Consequently, the capacity for loaning herpetological specimens to other institutions is limited.

UNDER CONSTRUCTION...slowly! (Such is the nature of this subject!) H erpetology of I ndonesia Since 1988 or so the trade in live reptiles for the 'pet' trade has grown exponentially and then stabilized at the present level. However, there seems to be a lack of information regarding these beautiful creatures. With this page I will try to present some information which may be trivial to some but important to others. My apologies for not updating this site in last few years. I have not been involved with reptiles since 2000.

BACKGROUND AND SOME HISTORY
Crickets ... Grey crickets.... Black crickets... the highest quality for all your feeder and fishing needs
Welcome to the Herpetology Africa website! We have been breeding feeder crickets for close to 20 years and have the capital investment, infrastructure and experience to show for it. Our operations are streamlined and quality control and sizing checks are carried out on a significant random sample basis daily before dispatch of tubs. The sizing of crickets is absolutely superb and is as accurate as nature will allow, to the size ordered. We are honed to produce the very best quality and freshness and stand behind our product 100%!
We have not only the most diverse range of cricket sizes available but also tub sizes to cater to the widest range of customer needs possible.
AND WE DELIVER DOOR TO DOOR!
Our Grey crickets (Achetus domesticus) are eminently suitable as a feed source for lizards, chameleons, frogs, birds, fish, spiders, small primates e.g. monkeys, mammals and similar. Our Black crickets (Gryllus bimaculatus) are a much larger cricket and have been very successfully used in the fresh water fishing arena, both recreationally and competitively, as fish bait.

Vertebrate Zoology
Herpetology
Division of Vertebrate Zoology is worldwide in scope, with over 23,000 specimens and specimen lots of amphibians (over 300 taxa) and reptiles (more than 1,300 taxa). Holdings include 95 type specimens of 8 taxa in both wet and osteological collections.
Most specimens were collected after the 1930s, and recent expeditions have added significantly to the collection. Additionally, field collecting in New England and elsewhere in the United States has improved the taxonomic diversity of the North American holdings. New England collections include specimens from the Maine Amphibian and Reptile Atlas Project, as well as from the Connecticut Amphibian Monitoring Project (in which the Yale Peabody Museum is a partner institution).
Specimens collected in the 19th century were not preserved with formalin, and so are suitable today for research techniques such as DNA sequencing. Often these specimens represent locality records that no longer exist, making them valuable for the study of systematic, phylogenetic, population and biogeographical patterns.
