"Health physics" is the profession devoted to protecting people and their environment from potential radiation hazards, while making it possible to enjoy the benefits of the peaceful use of the atom. Health physicists work in a variety of disciplines, including research, industry, education, environmental protection, and enforcement of government regulations. Medical Health Physicists work wherever radiation sources are used to diagnose and treat human diseases. Hospitals, clinics, and major medical centers use radiation sources, including x-ray machines, particle accelerators, and many types of radioactive materials. Medical health physicists are needed to ensure proper and safe working conditions for both patients and medical staff. A medical health physicist often serves as the designated radiation safety officer (RSO) for a medical facility. The RSO is responsible for performing radiation safety surveys of all radiation sources used within the facility; monitoring radiation exposure of workers, patients, and visitors to the facility; establishing and monitoring radiation safety procedures; and assuring the medical facility is in compliance with state and federal radiation safety regulations..

After the Trinity nuclear test in New Mexico, what were the radiation exposures to nearby residents whom the government did not realize were there? On a scale of 1 to 7, what have international scientists rated nuclear incidents such as Three Mile Island and Chernoby? What strategies are agencies employing to recover "orphaned" radioactive sources?
These and other questions will be addressed at the 52nd Annual Meeting of the Health Physics Society (HPS), which will take place July 8-12 in Portland, Oregon at the Doubletree/Convention Center. Approximately 1300 attendees are expected, with over 225 presentations throughout the week.

Division of Human Health
The objective of the IAEA programme in Human Health is to enhance the capabilities in Member States to address needs related to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of health problems through the application of nuclear techniques. The mandate arises from Article II of the IAEA's Statute: the Agency shall accelerate and enlarge the contribution of atomic energy to health. Cancer takes more lives than HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria together. By 2020 it is anticipated that there will be 15 million new cases of cancer every year, 9 million in less developed countries. The Agency supports the building-up of indigenous capabilities in radiation therapy to cure or alleviate the life-threatening effects of cancers in developing Member States. However, the resources available to the IAEA fall far short of those necessary to meet human needs around the world. In order to help meet these needs, a Programme of Action for Cancer Therapy ( PACT ) has been initiated that will introduce, expand, or improve

Physics Degrees Online
Physicists study many facets of what makes the universe work the way it does. Nuclear physicists, for example, study the smallest identifiable particles in the universe (called quarks), and how they interact to create different substances. Astrophysicists study planets, stars, and space. There are also physicists who study the behavior of matter in a variety of other disciplinessuch as bio-physicists, geo-physicists, and chemical physicists.
The Benefits of a Physics Degree
Whether or not you aspire to become a mad scientist or nutty professor, a degree in physics is a valuable credential. Online degree programs enable you to earn a degree from your home computer, working at your own pace. Bachelor's degrees typically take four years to complete. Most physicists work in research and development positions, which require a doctoral degree, but some applied research and development firms only require a master's. A bachelor's degree in physics can qualify you for technician and research assistant positions.
Physics Careers
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, research and development service firms and the federal government employ three out of five physicists. The federal government employs physicists in the Department of Defense, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), as well as in the departments of Commerce and Energy. Physicists in the U.S. earned, on average, an impressive salary of $87,450 in 2004. While salaries are not guaranteed and will vary based on location and employer, higher-level degrees in physics will likely increase your opportunities for employment and salary.

Decontamination and Decommissioning of Licensed Facilities
Pacific Radiation Corporation has the only standing commercial decontamination license in Southern California. We can therefore respond to accident situations in a minimum time frame and begin cleanup with no waiting time for a Radioactive Materials License amendment to be processed. We have had extensive experience decontaminating beta/gamma as well as transuranic alpha contaminated facilities. We maintain a complete inventory of alpha, beta and gamma contamination survey meters, have in store a wide variety of decontamination tools including pneumatic scabbling equipment for concrete surfaces and we are equipped with a complete supply of protective clothing and respiratory protective devices such as supplied air suits.

Field Surveys
Pacific Radiation Corporation maintains an impressive complement of survey meters designed to measure radiation levels from alpha, beta and gamma emitting radionuclides, neutron radiation fields and concentrations of radioactive gases or particulates in air. Our capabilities include two portable multichannel pulse height analyzers for on-site identification of gamma emitting sources. We have wide experience in the identification of unknown radioactive materials under field conditions.
