Health Physics Training
Guest researchers planning to participate in experiments using neutron beams and other radiation sources at the NIST Center for Neutron Research, are required to complete the Radiation Safety training program conducted by NIST Health Physics. The Radiation Safety training program consists of a 45 minute facility safety tour, a 3-5 hour computer based training session which includes quizzes for each training subject area, and a discussion/review session with an NCNR Health Physicist. This training program provides the information needed to work safely and to comply with NRC license and NCNR procedural requirements. The computer based portion of the Radiation Safety training program can be downloaded (via Internet) and completed in advance of your visit to NIST. This approach reduces the time you spend at NIST in becoming authorized to participate in neutron beam experiments. The Radiation Safety training program requires Microsoft Windows, and require approximately 21MB of disk space. You can obtain the program from an anonymous FTP directory /training

Karl Morgan The Father of Health Physics
Karl Morgan was the founder of Health Physics, a discipline which approaches questions of radiation dose and effects primarily from a physical rather than a biological perspective. He was instrumental in showing that there is no safe dose of radiation. He resigned his position as Head of Health Physics at Oak Ridge in 1972 when he was ordered by his superiors to suppress information in his possession about the toxicity of plutonium. He subsequently worked as a private consultant on behalf of radiation victims, including Karen Silkwood. He believes that the offically-defined "permissible levels" of radiation are much higher than they should be.

An Introduction to Health Physics and why this program is important to you Health Physics is the profession devoted to the protection of humans and their environment from potential radiation hazards, while at the same time making it possible for our advancing civilization to enjoy all of the benefits resulting from uses of the atom.
Radiation control in its professional aspects incorporates an understanding of many disciplines. It has common scientific interests with many areas of specialization: biophysics, physics, biochemistry, chemistry, biology, genetics, ecology, nuclear engineering, metallurgy, medicine, physiology and toxicology.
Other aspects of the profession include a working knowledge of economics, labor relations, public relations, teaching, philosophy and administration. The wide spectrum of knowledge required of the Health Physicist makes the profession both challenging and rewarding.

GRADUATE STUDY IN HEALTH PHYSICS
Graduate Program in Public Health
Colorado State University's Health Physics M.S. program has received full and unconditional accreditation from ABET/Applied Sciences Accreditation Commission. This Health Physics graduate program is only the 5th in the U.S. to be accredited. Health Physics is a profession associated with using radiation for the benefit of society. This includes applying scientific as well as practical knowledge in order to obtain these benefits without unreasonable risks to man or the environment.
The profession has evolved into a necessary part of all programs that involve radiation, including anything from naturally occurring radioactivity to man made sources of radiation. Originally the focus was directed to the prevention of unwarranted exposures to radiation.
Today, the health physicist is called upon to help society make judgments concerning the balance of risks and benefits from new technologies that depend on radiation. This spans many diverse fields including basic research, medicine, environmental restoration, industrial applications and space exploration.
Successful persons in health physics have broad backgrounds in physics, biology, instrumentation and understanding of risks and risk analysis.

School of Health Sciences - Health Physics Graduate Program
Health Physics Defined Health physics is a profession devoted to the protection of people and the environment from the harmful effects of radiation, thus providing for the utilization of radiation for the benefit of mankind. The profession, as we know it, began during World War II when the tremendous power available from nuclear energy was first being developed for weapons. The radiation hazards encountered during the early years of atomic energy were solved by the cooperation of physicists, chemists, biologists, engineers, and physicians. From this endeavor emerged the interdisciplinary specialty known as "health physics." Today, the use of radiation in medicine, industry, and research benefits all of us. To assure that radiation and radioactive materials are used safely, nuclear facilities and research laboratories demand personnel who understand the many types of radiation hazards and who know how to prevent and control them.
