Welcome to the Health Physics Society Web site, where you can find information and answers to your questions about radiation and radiation safety/protection. For many years, ionizing radiation has been beneficial to human beings for medical diagnosis and therapy, scientific research, and generating electrical power. However, when used in unsafe ways, ionizing radiation can harm people. Care must be taken to properly use radiation and to minimize unnecessary radiation exposures. The health physicist's job is to manage the beneficial use of ionizing radiation while protecting workers and the public from potential hazards. The Health Physics Society is dedicated to making sure that health physicists have the information and capabilities to do this. The Health Physics Society also has a goal of providing information for the public to assist in the understanding of the field of health physics. We invite you to explore our Web site and click on any features that might be of interest to you. 24 January 2008 What's New?

Health physicists principally work at facilities where radionuclides or ionizing radiation are used or produced such as medical institutions, government laboratories, nuclear power plants, regulatory agencies and manufacturers. There are many sub-specialites in the field of health physics , including The field of medical physics is similar to that of health physics since practitioners rely on the same fundamental science (i.e., radiation physics, biology, etc). Health physicists, however, focus on the evaluation and protection of human health from radiation, whereas medical physicists use radiation and other physics-based technologies for the diagnosis and treatment of disease.

This site is listed in the BBC Education Web Guide. Begin your journey on the internet with The Rail. This is junction 1360 on "The Science Expedition". "Health physics" is the science of radiation protection - protecting people from exposure to radiation, monitoring the effects of any exposures, and recording any radiation dose received by the person. Radiation is produced by the natural decay of radioactive materials. There are several types of radiation which are important to waste management and nuclear professionals: alpha, beta, gamma and neutron. Each type of radiation has different properties and will react with matter in different ways. For example, alpha and beta radiation have a relatively short range (a few millimetres or centimetres in most materials), while neutron and gamma radiation have a long range (many metres in air) and are very penetrating. The three main principles of radiation protection are: time, distance and shielding. To minimize your radiation exposure, spend as little time as possible near the source, stay as far away as possible, and put some shielding between yourself and the source.

Nuclear Engineering and Health Physics Scholarship and Fellowship Program
Funding for the program has been allocated by Congress, but we need approval before we can move ahead with soliciting applications. Please check the website the first week in February.
This program is designed to meet the Department of Energy's (DOE) needs for appropriately trained personnel for the maintenance and development of nuclear power technology and in research related to ongoing programs at DOE facilities. Increasing costs for graduate education, a high demand for nuclear engineers and health physicists, and the declining number of academic programs have had a negative impact on the number of well-qualified students seeking degrees in fission technologies and sciences. However, current and planned uses of fission reactors for energy generation and research support at DOE facilities, emphasize the importance of the availability of appropriately educated, highly qualified nuclear engineers and health physicists with undergraduate and advanced degrees. These fellowship and scholarship programs are designed to encourage talented students to continue their education in a related nuclear energy field. These programs will assist in preparing students for leadership roles in fission technology and will also support the broader objective of advancing fission energy through educational and research efforts.

Ionizing radiation, both natural and man-made, is one of many potential health hazards to which Soldiers, Army civilians and contractors, and the public may be exposed. The U.S. Army uses radioactive materials and ionizing radiation producing devices for many purposes. Some of these uses are military unique, such as depleted uranium used for vehicle armor and armor penetrating munitions. However, the majority of the Army's use of ionizing radiation (for example, luminous dials and gauges, nondestructive testing, medical x-ray and nuclear medicine procedures) are also common in the private sector. Army personnel may also be exposed to ionizing radiation from foreign industrial, nuclear power, and military sources during deployments and training exercises.
The Health Physics Program at the USACHPPM provides a variety of services to protect the health of soldiers and civilians and the environment from the harmful effects of ionizing radiation. These
