Mission of the UC Groundwater Cooperative Extension Program "The mission of the UCCE Groundwater Hydrology Program is to provide educational and scientific/technical support on current and emerging groundwater resources and groundwater quality issues in rural areas of California." Our groundwater education and outreach program primarily works with the water resources industry (public water supply utilities, irrigation districts, water districts, etc.), research, planning, and regulatory agencies on the local, county, state and federal level, farm advisors in county cooperative extension, and the agricultural industry. The components of the program are: 1) an integrated basic and applied research program that emphasizes hydrogeologic processes, contaminant fate and transport in both vadose zone and groundwater, and techniques for sampling, monitoring, and mitigation of contamination and groundwater quality problems; 2) an extension program that provides educational and technical support to local, state, and federal regulatory agencies, to natural resources conservation districts, irrigation and water districts, county farm advisors and policy makers in both the agricultural and urban sectors in the state;

Groundwater is used for drinking water, agriculture, industry, and even provides water for streams. If we don't protect this valuable resource we will lose it. Do you know about the risks to groundwater in your area?
  • In some areas of Oregon, more groundwater has been drawn by wells than is replaced by rainfall and snow melt. There are parts of the state that have widespread nitrate contamination of groundwater. And, there are localized cases of leaks, spills, or dumping that have polluted the groundwater.

O verview Needs and Benefits of the Groundwater Replenishment System
T he Orange County Water District has one of the finest state-certified water quality laboratories in the state, performing hundreds of thousands of analyses each year on thousands of water samples to ensure the safety of our water. The Groundwater Replenishment System has evolved and changed over time as new goals, data, regulations and facts have been identified. However, the needs and benefits of the project have remained constant:
  • Orange County needs more reliable, high-quality water in the future to replenish the groundwater basin, to protect the groundwater basin from seawater intrusion, and for industrial uses The Groundwater Replenishment System reduces the amount of treated wastewater released into the ocean and delays the need for another ocean outfall The Groundwater Replenishment System decreases Orange County's reliance on imported water from northern California and the Colorado River The Groundwater Replenishment System's locally-controlled water helps drought-proof Orange County The Groundwater Replenishment System's new water will help meet statewide water objectives The Groundwater Replenishment System helps reduce mineral build up in Orange County's groundwater by providing a new source of ultra-pure water to blend with other sources, including imported water.

Welcome to Save Our Groundwater!
Save Our Groundwater (SOG) is a New Hampshire Seacoast-area citizens action organization dedicated to protecting water in the public trust. We formed in 2001 in response to a bottled water company's application to take more than 400,000 gallons/day from the aquifer underlying our rural communities. Six years later, we're still holding the line.
The next Save Our Groundwater meeting is scheduled for Thursday, February 7, 2008 , 7-9 pm.
SOG meetings are held at the Sugar Shack on Route 4, one-half mile west of the Lee traffic circle. Look for the green Park and Ride sign at the driveway entrance. Hope to see you there!

BASIC GROUND WATER HYDROLOGY
    This overview of the science necessary to understand groundwater issues is taken from Chapter 2 of the Washington State, Department of Ecology, Ground Water Resource Protection Handbook, Published December 1986.
HYDROLOGIC CYCLE
    The hydrologic cycle is a constant movement of water above, on, and below the earth's surface. It is a cycle that replenishes ground water supplies. It begins as water vaporizes into the atmosphere from vegetation, soil, lakes, rivers, snowfields and oceans-a process called evapotranspiration As the water vapor rises it condenses to form clouds that return water to the land through precipitation: rain, snow, or hail. Precipitation falls on the earth and either percolates into the soil or flows across the ground. Usually it does both. When precipitation percolates into the soil it is called infiltration ; when it flows across the ground it is called surface runoff . The amount of precipitation that infiltrates, versus the amount that flows across the surface, varies depending on factors such as the amount of water already in the soil, soil composition, vegetation cover and degree of slope. Surface runoff eventually reaches a stream or other surface water body where it is again evaporated into the atmosphere. Infiltration, however, moves under the force of gravity through the soil. If soils are dry, water is absorbed by the soil until it is thoroughly wetted. Then excess infiltration begins to move slowly downward to the water table. Once it reaches the water table, it is called

Windmill Photo Arthur Mostead Along with surface water, groundwater is under threat from pollution, over allocation and overuse, and requires active management. Groundwater management, like the management of most other natural resources, is currently the responsibility of state and territory governments. The Australian Government, however, is seeking to provide leadership and coordination for groundwater policy reforms and a focus for resolution of cross-jurisdictional issues. The Australian Government Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts contributes to national processes for the determination of sustainable groundwater yields. The Department also contributes to the development of approaches for the protection and management of groundwater-dependent environment values, including the joint use of ground and surface waters.

The Boston Groundwater Trust was established by a city ordinance to study groundwater problems. The depletion of groundwater (aquifers) can lead to the drying of wooden piles due to wood pile rot under structures, causing buildings to collapse or requiring them to be demolished. The trust is located in Boston, Massachusetts. Areas in Boston the trust monitors include the Back Bay and Beacon Hill neighborhoods. The trustees are:
Gary L. Saunders, Tim Ian Mitchell, Galen Gilbert, Peter Sherin, Michael P. Ross, Para Jayasinghe, Edward J. Collins They represent some notable organizations:

Groundwater Modeling Program Overview

The Groundwater Modeling Program (GMP) has provided groundwater modeling support on a department-wide basis since 1980 when an EPA grant was used to fund the use of groundwater models for site remediation. Initially, the GMP was part of the Hydrologic Studies Unit (HSU) of the Land and Water Management Division (LWMD), today, it is part of the Remediation and Redevelopment Division.
