Description
Professor Dey's persuasive, instructive, critical, engaging, and often humorous investigation places many elements of grounded theory under close scrutiny. In searching out the methodological principles on which grounded theory is built, he reveals its main features as a qualitative research methodology for social research and the issues fundamental to understanding it. He also highlights the disagreements between the originators of grounded theory, their reasons, and their effects. His enlightened perspective thereby makes sense of the ways in which grounded theory approaches some of the key issues in qualitative analysis, such as coding and categorization, analysis of process, and generation of theory.
Audience
Methodologists with knowledge of grounded theory; advanced undergraduates, graduate students and professionals in courses that: introduce grounded theory and qualitative methods; introduce computer-assisted qualitative data analysis; methods courses. Tourism industry, business schools, public policy and social work programs, and nursing programs; sociologists, demographers, educators, anthropologists and those in communication research.

Perhaps the major distinction between grounded theory and traditional field work is that grounded theory is less concerned with detailed description and holistic interpretation than with generalized explanations of the social phenomena under study. To facilitate the development of theoretical generalizations, grounded-theory researchers rely heavily on comparative analysis, whereas many social scientists who use field methods confine their research to the intensive study of a single group, tribe, organization, or other social collectivity. master ,the

An Introduction to Grounded Theory The study presented in the paper was an evaluation of an individually configured multimedia learning application used in real contexts. The necessity to evaluate learning applications in this way has been discussed by Squires (1996). The study involved staff and students using the application in a range of environments and educational contexts as part of their normal curriculum. The application also provided a complex, rich and differentiated environment. Each learner would have a different experience of the application, depending on how it was configured for them personally. Grabinger and colleagues (1997) have emphasised the importance of extrinsic factors in learning, including motivational aspects, collaboration, meta-cognition and other factors leading to greater invested effort and dynamic generative learning. The control of these important external factors was impossible in an experiment. In addition, the aim of the study involved assessing the benefit of the application to a user in the delivery of effective learning. The measurement of learning itself presents a challenge. Reeves (1992) cautions us against the direct and inappropriate use of science to answer such complex questions.

Grounded Classification: Grounded Theory and Faceted Classification
Library Trends Fall, 1998 by Susan Leigh Star ABSTRACT This article compares the qualitative method of grounded theory (GT) with Ranganathan's construction of faceted classifications (FC) in library and information science. Both struggle with a core problemi.e., the representation of vernacular words and processes, empirically discovered, which will, although ethnographically faithful, be powerful beyond the single instance or case study. The article compares Glaser and Strauss's (1967) work with that of Ranganathan (1950). INTRODUCTION The landscape of information retrieval is shifting rapidly (with networked distributed computing, large-scale digital libraries, and enormously powerful search engines). As the introduction to this issue notes, formerly firm boundaries between library and office, catalog and desktop are transmogrifying. The change means that a wider range of human activities come under the purview of library and information science. When the library and the desktop become seamless, then practices of work organization become part of the cataloging and indexing process. This merger calls for methodological creativity and cross fertilization between previously disparate methodological domains.

Workshop on Grounded Theory
I had a joint workshop for ILISA at the National Library of Iran on last Friday from 9:00 am to 5 pm. The workshop was about the basics of qualitative research in general and Grounded Theory in particular as an example of inductive qualitative methodology. Dr. Ebrahim Afshar and I were the teachers of the workshop and 57 academic librarians and LIS students from different parts of the country attended there.
We deliberately employed an unplanned method to teach the principles of qualitative research and Grounded Theory to run the workshop based on an intuitive development of the discussions with participants and it really worked. Dr. Afshar and I had not arranged the details of the topics and slides before the workshop. In fact, we employed an exploratory approach and tried to explain the pivotal aspects of Grounded Theory. I explained real examples of my PhD research to show how we can employ this methodology in practice.
During the last eight months I have had several workshops on different topics for different groups of people but this one was very different and I enjoyed of taking part in discussions and exploring the topics thoroughly.

http://www.langrust.com/grounded1.htm
For Discovering Guidelines that Work If you want to develop creative guidelines with real substance, here is a way to get them. Grounded Theory procedure makes it possible to find out the underlying attributes that consumers actually respond to. You can project from how they react to existing materials to how they will respond to new ones, even before they are made. A revolutionary new technique . The traditional technique of the social sciences has been to build theories by testing pre-existing hypotheses that came from somewhere else. Grounded Theory development procedures use data in a new way: to stimulate, and then to shape, the inductive thought processes of the researcher. It is a systematic approach to hypothesis building and theory testing. And it has proven to be very powerful. History . In 1967, two academic sociologists, Barney Glaser & Anselm Strauss at UC-San Francisco put forth Grounded Theory Development as a systematic approach to generating new conceptualizations of what is going on in newly emerging areas of study. Their seminal work, "The Development of Grounded Theory" (1967), moved researchers past the hypothesis-testing uses of raw data into the hypothesis-generating potential of their observations. The approach has been steadily expanding its reach within academia - through sociology and social anthropology and, more recently into applied disciplines like educational research. Applications.

Employee Needs and Expectations in the Irish Voluntary Sector
Mr Serge Basini Dr Finian Buckley AUTHORS Mr Serge Basini is a research fellow and part-time lecturer in Strategic Human Resource Management in DCU Business School (EMail: basinis@dcu.ie Dr Finian Buckley (EMail: buckleyf@dcu.ie ABSTRACT Little research exists on the work needs and expectations of employees in the Irish Voluntary Sector. The paper presents the preliminary findings of the first nation-wide survey of voluntary organisations, focusing on the psycho-social variables underpinning work. The survey employed the Meaning Of Working (MOW) questionnaire, widely used in European work-vales research. Results from the 259 respondent voluntary organisations are compared with a private sector population, and indicate significant differences in employee work values, reward expectations and job involvement. The results are discussed and implications for the management and development of the Irish Voluntary Sector are advanced. INTRODUCTION . Levy (1993) highlights this significance when he claimed that membership of this sector in the USA is upwards of 561,000 organisations, with an estimated spending power of over $300 billion per annum. There is little doubt that third sector organisations are also making a direct and substantial contribution to contemporary Irish life. For instance, Fleishman (1995) indicates that the expenditure of this sector in Ireland, as a percentage of Gross Domestic Product, is approximately 3.4%.

It now seems that what I conceived of as a problem particular to my multi-role situation has become an acute problem for the community at-large. Practitioners are performing excellent work combining complex ideas, curricula are emerging to prepare new professionals and new venues for publication are being established. Each of these work products speaks to the seriousness and rigor with which the community is now prepared to approach IA, as well as to the extent of the community’s aspirations for its future. The everyday, informal conversations on listservs and at IA-related conferences, especially the most recent IA Summit in Vancouver, are increasingly nuanced. Vexing issues that require the sort of examination one would expect to be provided by academics keep resurfacing. Introduction
This paper summarizes the principal findings of research that sought to provide a comprehensive understanding of the environmental scanning process. The methodology used was of major importance in obtaining data that are grounded largely in the personal experience of managers, but also in documentary evidence and in direct observation by the researcher. The purpose of the study was to investigate how managers in the Portuguese chemical industry scan their environment for information, what are the contextual factors that affect this activity, and also how managers' perceptions of environmental change affect the strategic change they implement.
Methodology and research design
Methodology
In the context of this research, the case study was considered appropriate for providing a holistic approach to the study of environmental scanning in industrial organizations operating in the chemical industry. In creating the case study, several types of data and information were collected, including general data about the industry and specific information about the companies that agreed to participate.
