Books about glaciology
Glacial Geology: Ice Sheets and Landforms
This book provides a modern comprehensive summary of glacial geology. During the Late Cenozoic period much of the northern hemisphere was extensively glaciated. This had a profound affect on the nature of the landscape. In order to understand this landscape one must be able to identify and interpret the glacial landforms and sediments from which it is composed. In a clear and precise format, this book explains these landforms and sediments and provides the reader with the tools with which to interpret them. It shows how glaciers work and how the processes of glacial erosion and deposition which operate within them are recorded. Modern and Past Glacial Environments
This text is produced with the student mind, providing accessibility to a complex subject and introducing topics that provide the fundamental underpinnings of knowledge on glaciers, ice sheets, their sediments and landscapes. Modern and Past Glacial Environments features a large collection of photographs, line diagrams and tables and includes examples of glacial environments and landscapes which are drawn from a world wide perspective. Together with a web- based set of current and comprehensive references and bibliographic sources, it provides an ideal reference text.

Sedimentology and Petroleum Geology - I am also very well versed in general sciences. I am not an expert in igneous and metamorphic geology. I have completed B.Sc. in Environmental Geology at Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec and a M.Sc. degree in Sedimentology at Queen`s University in Kingston, Ontario. I have about 10 years of experience in oil and gas exploration and development.

Expert: George Ardies Date: Subject: Ice Age / Glaciology / Moraine Strata Question Hi what are the controversial debates and theories in this field. I am thinking in terms of working on dating the strata in glacial moraines to determine the rate of ice retreat in northern Russia. Are there any hot debates or contentious issues surounding this field of study - I am looking for a potential source of conflict which I can expand to make a 'baddie' for a novel I am planning.

64. GLACIOLOGY
The course will examine fundamental glaciological processes (especially mass balance and glacier dynamic processes) and their representation in ice sheet
http://www.unis.no/studies/GEOLOGY/AG-325.HTM
AG-325 Further details GLACIOLOGY Objective:
The objective of this course is to examine how Arctic glaciers respond to climate changes, focusing on glaciers in Svalbard and the Greenland Ice Sheet, although other areas will also be considered. The course will examine fundamental glaciological processes (especially mass balance and glacier dynamic processes) and their representation in ice sheet models. Content:
The course consists of a systematic survey of modern research into glacial processes and the response of glacier systems to climate change. This includes: recent historical changes to Arctic ice masses; the principles of mass balance monitoring and modelling; glacier hydrology; glacier motion and dynamics; surges; calving glaciers; and numerical modelling. Each week of the course consists of a combination of lectures, seminars where papers and results are discussed, and field excursions. Students will also have the opportunity to present details of their own research projects. Because modern glaciology is a quantitative subject, all parts of the course will involve physics and mathematics. All elements of the course will be taught from first principles, but students must be willing to engage with technical material. It should be noted that due to the prevailing climatic conditions in Svalbard in March, students should be prepared for cold conditions during field excursions and fieldwork.

What is Glaciology? The cryosphere plays an important active and passive role in the climate system. On one hand the global ice and snow covered area varies on seasonal, interdecadal and millenial time scales modulating the radiation budget and hydrological cycle of the earth. On the other hand polar ice sheets and cold alpine glaciers represent unique archives of climatic change, which provide a multitude of information on paleoclimatic (temperature, precipitation, circulation) and paleoatmospheric (aerosol concentration, trace gas abundance) conditions. Both the reconstruction of ice sheet volume and the mass balance of glaciers by means of modelling, geophysical reconnaissance methods as well as field studies and the unraveling of climatic information stored in the ice matrix and in air bubble enclosures of polar ice cores are the main scientific objectives of the glaciology department at AWI.

    Highlights Glaciology
    Terrence J. Hughes

In June, the International Glaciological Society conducted an International Symposium on Fast Glacier Flow in Yakutat, Alaska. Of the many scientific presentations, one that stands out was given by H. Jay Zwally of NASA, who, with colleagues, found that diurnal changes in summer melting rates in the ablation zone just north of Jakobshavns Isbrae, the fastest ice stream draining the Greenland Ice Sheet, correlated with an immediate increase in ice velocity. Their findings indicate that at least some surface meltwater rapidly found its way to the bed and increased the rate of basal sliding. This correlation has profound consequences about the response of ice sheets, past and present, to climate forcing. The idea that the Greenland Ice Sheet was responding slowly is no longer credible, opening the possibility that ice sheets have a rapid response to slow climate warming, beyond a threshold that allows quantities of surface meltwater to reach the bed.
This prospect was dramatically reinforced later in 2002, when NASA satellite imagery showed that the floating terminus of Jakobshanvs Isbrae was breaking apart. Also, William Krabill, along with other NASA scientists, found the breakup correlated with rapid increases in ice velocity and surface lowering in the Jakobshavns ice drainage system over distances up to 100 kilometers upstream from the calving front.

    Ice and Climate
The Ice and Climate research group works with climate research based on the information that can be obtained from ice cores. The group is a part of the newly started centre of excellence, Centre for Ice and Climate
    Ice Core Drilling
The group is among the world leaders in ice core drilling, and has been the coordinating body of the DYE-3, GRIP, and NorthGRIP deep drilling projects in Greenland. In 2006 an ice core was drilled through the small ice cap Flade Isblink in North-East Greenland. We also participate in deep drilling projects in Antarctica, e.g. the EPICA project. NEEM2007 Traverse Flade Isblink NorthGRIP EPICA ... GRIP Early 2007 it was decided to start a new deep drilling project in North-West Greenland, the so-called NEEM project . The project has participants from many nations and will start in the summer of 2007. In 2007, equipment will be moved from the NorthGRIP camp to the new drill site, and additional equipment will be flown in from the coast. The basic infrastructure (airstrip and the first buildings) will be established . Drilling starts in 2008.
    Climate Research
Ice cores are key sources of information for the understanding of past climate. Climate data with annual resolution ranging more than 100,000 years back in time can be retrieved from Greenland ice cores. Read more about our research topics on the
