Geomorphologists seek to understand why landscapes look the way they do: to understand landform history and dynamics, and predict future changes through a combination of field observation, physical experiment, and numerical modeling . Geomorphology is practiced within geology geodesy geography archaeology , and civil and environmental engineering . Early studies in geomorphology are the foundation for pedology , one of two main branches of soil science Landforms evolve in response to a combination of natural and anthropogenic processes. The landscape is built up through tectonic uplift and volcanism Denudation occurs by erosion and mass wasting , which produces sediment that is transported and deposited elsewhere within the landscape or off the coast. Landscapes are also lowered by subsidence, either due to tectonics or physical changes in underlying sedimentary deposits. These processes are each influenced differently by climate ecology , and human activity.

OVERVIEW
Geomorphology From Space
Table of Contents Foreword Prologue Preface ... Geomorphology from Space is an out of print 1986 NASA publication edited by Nicholas M. Short, Sr. and Robert W. Blair, Jr. designed for use by the remote sensing science and educational communities to study landforms and landscapes. The core of this book is a gallery of space imagery consisting of 237 plates, each treating a geographic region where a particular landform theme is exemplified. Commentary, photographs, locator maps, and sometimes a geologic map accompany each plate.

The Geomorphology Specialty Group is a component of the Association of American Geographers. The purpose of this group is to foster better communication among those working in the geomorphic sciences, especially geography. Graduate Student Paper Competition Annual Meeting of the AAG in Boston April 15-19, 2008 The Awards Committee invites students to participate in the Graduate Student Paper Competition at the 2008 AAG meeting . Graduate students from all branches of geomorphology are encouraged to submit an application and present a paper. Separate awards can be given for Masters and Ph.D. students. Students must be members of the AAG and the GSG to be eligible for the award. Applicants for the student paper competition will be placed into special sessions organized specifically for the competition. The GSG Awards Committee will evaluate the papers based on their research contribution to the field of geomorphology and on the effectiveness of the presentation. The award will be presented at the GSG business meeting and at the AAG awards banquet. Please Note: The deadline for submitting materials and any supporting documents to the Awards Committee for the 2008 award has been extended to November 26, 2007

See Class Notes for course logistics. Introduction: Earth scientists are increasingly called upon to evaluate past, present and future environmental changes on both local and global scales. They can be called upon to predict the long-term stability of hazardous waste sites or to mitigate the effects of natural disasters. Vital to evaluating and predicting environmental change is an understanding of the origin and evolution of topographic features and the role of groundwater in the environment. Geomorphology is concerned with the evolution of landscapes and the earth surface processes that form and modify them. Since the land surface is located at the interface of the earth's lithosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere, geomorphology is necessarily interdisciplinary. In addition to the natural forces modifying landscapes, anthropogenic forces contribute to surface modification and will be included in the study of geomorphology

http://www.nmsu.edu/~geoweb/Geomorph/geomorphology.htm
Back Home Simply put, Geomorphology is the science of landforms. It is the science that provides with a closer look at the Earth's surface and the processes that have formed them. Although Geomorphology is concerned with landforms that currently exist, past landforms and events must be examined in order to fully understand how they came about. Although the term Geomorphology is a relatively new term (1880's), the examination of the forces of nature that have impacted the Earth's surface extends back into the days of early Greek and Roman philosophers such as Aristotle and Seneca. Their writings included ideas on stream erosion, earthquakes and other deformations. Though these early philosophers speculated on the ideas of landscape evolution, these processes and thoughts were not fully examined until just before the 1800's. In 1785, James Hutton began to develop on ideas on the formation of the surface. He argued that the surfaces were formed by slow, but continuous erosive processes instead of great catastrophic events as others have thought. From Hutton's work, came Charles Lyell's principles of Uniformitarianism. These 4 principles are:
  • Uniformity of Law- it is assumed that natural laws are a constant.
