University of Minnesota, Duluth Sometimes the magma ponded and slowly solidfied in chambers within the lava pile to form coarse-grained igneous intrusions, some of which we now see as the Duluth Complex. After almost complete separation of the originally 40-km-thick continental (granitic) crust and its replacement by ocean (basaltic) crust, magmatic activity and rifting abruptly ceased about 1086 million years ago for reasons not completely understood. The cooling of dense lava rocks caused continued downwarping of the rift valley and led to its infilling with sediments. We now see these sediments as the sandstones of east-central Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin (Bayfield Peninsula). Buried beneath a blanket of sand, the Midcontinent Rift became a scar on the face of Laurentia. Its role in shaping the landscape of Minnesota was not done, however. geology of Duluth for more details and pictures.

Geology at Hamilton
The geology program at Hamilton combines an innovative curriculum, an emphasis on field work and a commitment to student-faculty research. Concentrators must complete eight required courses in geology, one elective and a two-semester senior project or thesis. Hamilton also offers a concentration in geoarchaeology, which combines a background in the geosciences with preparation in archaeology.
Students may minor in geology by taking one introductory course and four other courses in the department at the 200 level or higher. Alternatively, students may minor in environmental studies and choose from a wide variety of courses in many disciplines, including many in geology.
High school preparation for studies in the geosciences should include courses in the sciences as well as advanced courses in English composition. Student Research
Because geology classes are small, students have the opportunity to work closely with faculty members in and out of the classroom. Field work is a vital part of geology and has been integrated into nearly all classes at every level. Students and professors have conducted expeditions to Hawaii, Iceland, the Florida Keys, Colorado, the Pacific Northwest and the European Alps. In addition, students and professors have collaborated on original research projects from coastal Maine to Tasmania to the Galapagos, thanks, in part, to grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the American Chemical Society.

The Geology Certificate curriculum is designed to provide students a basic knowledge in geological sciences and skills, which facilitate paraprofessional employment such as geological technician and geological field assistant. The Associate of Science Transfer Degree in Geology curriculum is designed to prepare students for studying Geology at most universities. This program will enable students to develop a strong foundation in geology, physics, chemistry, and mathematics. Furthermore, the theoretical knowledge and laboratory skills acquired by students in this program will also enhance their success with obtaining entry-level jobs that require two years of college-level science and math.

Petrified Forest "The Bad Lands grade all the way from those that are almost rolling in character to those that are so fantastically broken in form and so bizarre in color as to seem hardly properly to beling to this earth." Theodore Roosevelt As you drive or hike through western North Dakota, the gently rolling hills open up dramatically into the varied and colorful layers of the badlands. Curiosity might lead you to take a closer look at the rocks making up the layers. This closer look takes you back millions of years to an ancient world of swamps and forests. During the epochs that followed, the land continued to change. Deposition from the mountains in the west continued throughout much of the Eocene, Oligocene, and Miocene epochs. Then as the Pliocene Epoch began, erosion dominated and the layers began to be stripped away. Rivers meandered through broad, shallow valleys across the western Dakotas and eastern Montana plains. Although the rivers changed their courses many times, when the Pliocene Epoch came to a close about two million years ago, one of these rivers existed in almost the same position as the modern Little Missouri River. This river flowed northward to merge first with the ancestral Yellowstone River near Williston, North Dakota, and then merged with the Missouri River, continuing northeastward through Saskatchewan and Manitoba to Hudson Bay.

Geology is the study of the earth, earth materials, and earth systems. It is a physical and natural science and is characterized by both resource and environmental facets. Industrial employment for geological graduates is broad, emphasizing areas such as energy resources, mineral deposits, and complex environmental issues. Because geology draws heavily on basic science and mathematics, for this program, the core curriculum of basic geology is combined with physics, chemistry, and mathematics.
