A Geographic Information System (GIS) is an organized collection of computer hardware, software, geographic data, and personnel designed to capture, store, update, manipulate, analyze, and display all forms of geographically referenced information (data identified according to their location). This technology can be used for scientific research, resource management and planning. GIS allows users to perform very difficult, time consuming, or otherwise impractical spatial analyses quickly and efficiently.
The GIS at the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) is a department-wide group of offices and divisions that use GIS technologies. These include: Illinois Natural History Survey, Illinois State Geological Survey, Illinois State Water Survey, Waste Management and Research Center, Illinois State Museum, IDNR Office of Mines and Minerals, IDNR Office of Realty and Environmental Planning, and IDNR Office of Resource Conservation. In the spirit of cooperation and to avoid duplication of effort, GIS data are freely shared between these offices and divisions.

, is a multifunctional telecommunications management solution. It is a designed enhancement of MapInfo Professional Whatever form your current data is in, TGIS will enhance it by generating visual assessments of your records, allowing quick and easy analysis of facilities in various operating areas - even if the area is new to you. By linking up to resident mainframe databases, TGIS gives you the ability to geographically portray facilities and high trouble areas. When all is said and done, TGIS will prove to be an invaluable one-stop resource that will keep you in control and in the loop.
As an information hub and organizational planning tool, TGIS has the ability to function as a single, centralized source of all computerized records, thereby enabling more efficient control of diminishing resources. Planners can develop cost-effective strategies to service customers' short and long term needs, engineers can use data to easily and accurately identify areas requiring rehabilitation and/or relief, and dispatchers possess the geographic information needed to assign technicians with greater speed and efficiency.

The Regional Geographic Information System
In what has been heralded by the media as one of the largest local government multi-participant Geographic Information System (GIS) projects ever, twenty-one cities, townships, and quasi-governmental organizations have joined together in West Michigan to make life a bit easier for everyone. This powerful, regionally focused GIS benefits not only the participants, but also the citizens we serve. An acronym for "Regional Geographic Information System," REGIS provides a common database and suite of applications and interfaces to satisfy the spatial data management needs of all participant members. By participating in REGIS and working together as a team, member communities will be able to share valuable information, provide better and more consistent service to constituents, and reduce operating costs.

A geographic information system, or GIS, is an organizational structure with a staff, a suite of equipment and technical tools, and a computerized information base of land related information. A GIS can be used to assimilate, analyze and depict spatially related information in a variety of ways for any number of disciplines. The Rhode Island Geographic Information System (RIGIS) is a consortium of government and private organizations employing computer and communications technology to manage and use a collective data base of comprehensive geographically related information. The mission of RIGIS is to monitor, coordinate, and provide leadership for activities related to the use of geographic information system technology in Rhode Island, and to support initiatives to implement or use this technology.
History
The Director of the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (RIDEM) started the precursor to the RIGIS in 1985. He did so by initiating an agreement between that state agency and the University of Rhode Island (URI) to establish a GIS for the management and analysis of environmental data in Rhode Island. The RI Department of Transportation (RIDOT), the RI Statewide Planning Program, and the RI Solid Waste Management Corporation (now RI Resource Recovery Corporation) joined this effort shortly thereafter, each supporting the concept of a unified, centrally managed spatially related data base. Overall coordination was accomplished through an informal committee of top level management from each of these five organizations meeting on an ad hoc basis. Technical management of the data base resided at the University of Rhode Island. The RIDEM provided all funding for operations at the Environmental Data Center (URI/EDC) at the University through 1989.
