Mission The definition of GIS varies depending on specific applications, but generally it is described as a computer-based system with the ability to store, retrieve, modify, analyze, and represent geographic data as useful information so as to facilitate management, decision making and problem solving. A Geographic Information System (GIS) is one of the best tools currently available for managing geographic information. Examples of geographic information include addresses, parcels, public land boundaries, administrative regions, trails, roads, wetland areas, buildings, and utility locations. Many government departments are using GIS because it offers a way of understanding and dealing with complex spatial problems by organizing the data, viewing their spatial associations, performing multiple analyses, and synthesizing results into maps and reports, such operations are difficult to perform manually without the help of GIS. GIS technology is very useful in communication, allowing the public and many different departments access to the same database. This means that each department does not have to keep separate versions of other department's data in order to use them for their own agency's needs.

On Epidemiology and Geographic Information Systems: A Review and Discussion of Future Directions
Keith C. Clarke, Ph.D., Sara L. McLafferty, Ph.D,. and Barbara J. Tempalski
Hunter College-CUNY, New York, New York, USA Download Article Geographic information systems are powerful automated systems for the capture, storage, retrieval, analysis, and display of spatial data. While the systems have been in development for more than 20 years, recent software has made them substantially easier to use for those outside the field. The systems offer new and expanding opportunities for epidemiology because they allow an informed user to choose between options when geographic distributions are part of the problem. Even when used minimally, these systems allow a spatial perspective on disease. Used to their optimum level, as tools for analysis and decision making, they are indeed a new information management vehicle with a rich potential for public health and epidemiology. Geographic information systems (GIS) are "automated systems for the capture, storage, retrieval, analysis, and display of spatial data"

Become certified to work in one of the fastest growing fields: Geospatial Technology. The U.S. Labor Department predicts that the Geospatial Technology Industry will grow from three billion dollars in revenue in 1997 to 21 billion dollars in revenue over the next couple of years. Our GIS Certification program, offered through the College of the Extended University, is unique because it combines instruction in Geographic Information Systems and Science. Each of the certificate courses is taught in two Saturdays from 9:00 am – 5:30 pm in our GIS lab, a state of the art GIS training facility. Participants may also use the lab for course related work during weekday lab open hours. For more information on the GIS certificate program

For other uses, see GIS (disambiguation) A geographic information system (GIS) , also known as a geographical information system or geospatial information system , is a system for capturing, storing, analyzing and managing data and associated attributes which are spatially referenced to the Earth. In the strictest sense, it is an information system capable of integrating, storing, editing, analyzing, sharing, and displaying geographically-referenced information. In a more generic sense, GIS is a tool that allows users to create interactive queries (user created searches), analyze the spatial information, edit data, maps, and present the results of all these operations. Geographic information science is the science underlying the geographic concepts, applications and systems, taught in degree and GIS Certificate programs at many universities. Geographic information system technology can be used for scientific investigations resource management asset management Environmental Impact Assessment ... marketing , and logistics . For example, GIS might allow emergency planners to easily calculate emergency response times in the event of a
