    Introduction and Mission
The International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG), which was established in 1919, is dedicated to the scientific study of the Earth and the application of the knowledge gained by such studies to the needs of society, such as more rational use of mineral resources, reduction of the effects of natural hazards, and environmental protection. The Union's objectives are the promotion and coordination of physical, chemical, and mathematical studies of the Earth and its environment in space. These studies include the shape of the Earth, its gravitational and magnetic fields, the dynamics of the Earth as a whole and of its component parts, the Earth's internal structure, the hydrologic cycle including snow and ice, all aspects of the oceans, the atmosphere, the ionosphere, magnetopshere, and solar-terrestrial relations, and analogous problems associated with the Moon and other planets. The IUGG has supported collaborative international interdisciplinary research programmes such as the International Geophysical Year (1957-58), the Upper Mantle Project (1964-70), the Geodynamics Project (1972-79), the Global Atmospheric Research Programme (1970-80), and the International Lithosphere Programme (1981-90). A major achievement has been the creation, through the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU), of the World Data Center System, from which the data gathered during these major programmes are available to research workers everywhere.

It also monitors variations over time in the earth's rotation, size, and topography. Geodesists use various surveying techniques to measure the distances and directions between points on, under, or above the earth's surface. They calculate the elevation, latitude, and longitude of thousands of places on earth. One major use of geodetic data is the making of a wide variety of maps, from navigational charts to topographical maps.

We recognize K-12 spatial information technology as an essential component in the education of 21st century students. Our goal is to develop ways to integrate this technology into every student's problem solving tool kit. We have done work with various government agencies and educational organizations. Our current projects are highlighted below, with links to each web page where you will find a detailed description of the project.
BGRG , in collaboration with NASA’s Commercial Remote Sensing Program (CRSP) , has developed a comprehensive and integrated application of remote sensing and geographic information systems for K-12 schools using a customized version of ESRI 's ArcView for GIS Software. The objective of GEODESY is to enhance the inter-relationship between computer literacy and geographic awareness among our nation’s students. Students learn to interpret and analyze geographic information so they can answer relevant questions about where they are

    Geodesy at Curtin
Geodesy comprises the study of the Earth's shape and gravity field, and provides the scientific basis of precise surveying, navigation, mapping, and studies of the physics and dynamics of the Earth. The Western Australian Centre for Geodesy is part of the Department of Spatial Sciences at Curtin University of Technology . Staff and students in the Centre are active in a diverse range of both pure and applied geodetic research of national and international significance. Our geodetic research programs use state-of-the-art equipment and software, and involve close collaborative links with other universities, industry and government, both in Australia and overseas. The core research areas and strengths of the Centre are in gravity field determination, deformation monitoring, and precise satellite positioning. Further details are available in our Geodesy Brochure (1,443 kB in PDF format).

I have edited and uploaded about 30 short technical notes. They are divided into sections: Geodesy, Maps, GPS, Atmosphere, Time, Mathematics, and General. Little mathematics is needed to understand most topics. A few require vectors and calculus. The more technical notes are yet to be uploaded.

I have provided about 500 modules in Fortran , which was the major language I used in scientific studies. While this may be out of date, it may serve as template for some. The majority of the geodesy modules, and some others were converted to Matlab. This language needs an runtime program that is expensive, but usually discounted for educational institutions. I have also converted a small number of geodesy modules to JavaScript. These were used in an online interactive module.

Satellite techniques What is geodesy? Geodesy is a science, the oldest earth (geo-) science, in fact. It was born of fear and curiosity, driven by a desire to predict natural happenings and calls for the understanding of these happenings. The classical definition, according to one of the "fathers of geodesy" reads: "Geodesy is the science of measuring and portraying the earth’s surface" [Helmert, 1880, p.3]. Nowadays, we understand the scope of geodesy to be somewhat wider. It is captured by the following definition [Vanícek and Krakiwsky, 1986, p.45]: "

Geodesy and geophysics are concerned mostly with what is going on under our feet, so it may seem ironic that these two disciplines are advanced by looking up at the stars! VLBI techniques, which were originally developed for studying radio objects in the universe can, in effect, be turned upside down to do very precise studies of the Earth. Geodetic studies help aid in the use of GPS and other navigational equipment. By simultaneously collecting data from a single radio source via a worldwide array of radio telescopes, the relative time-of-arrival of signals from that source to each telescope can be determined to within a few picoseconds (3 picoseconds = 1 mm of light travel time). By observing many radio sources spread widely over the sky over a period of 24 hours, data are collected that allow the ultra-precise measurements of the Earth and its orientation in space. The geodetic VLBI techniques in use at Haystack originated more than three decades ago at the Observatory, which continues to lead the way in new developments and improved accuracy in these important research methods.
    Geodetic VLBI in Action
Among the important applications of geodetic VLBI are:
