Geochemistry
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation search The field of geochemistry involves study of the chemical composition of the Earth and other planets , chemical processes and reactions that govern the composition of rocks and soils , and the cycles of matter and energy that transport the Earth's chemical components in time and space, and their interaction with the hydrosphere and the atmosphere The most important fields of geochemistry are:
  • Isotope geochemistry : Determination of the relative and absolute concentrations of the elements and their isotopes in the earth and on earth's surface. Examination of the distribution and movements of elements in different parts of the earth (crust, mantle, hydrosphere etc.) and in minerals with the goal to determine the underlying system of distribution and movement. Cosmochemistry : Analysis of the distribution of elements and their isotopes in the cosmos Organic geochemistry : A study of the role of processes and compounds that are derived from living or once-living organisms. Applications to environmental, hydrological and mineral exploration studies.

    http://www.geo.uu.nl/Research/Geochemistry/
Geochemical research at Utrecht University emphasizes the study of processes taking place in environments near the Earth's surface, in particular, soils, sediments, aquifers, estuaries, and the ocean. These environments are characterized by the presence of water and are linked to one another via the hydrological cycle. In addition to being a transport agent, solvent and chemical reactant, water is indispensable for life. The biogeochemical functioning of Earth surface environments is increasingly affected by human activity. The environmental changes due to mankind occur at the local, regional and global scale. An important task of geochemical research is to characterize these changes and to predict the responses of natural systems to anthropogenic perturbations. The study of past environmental changes provides important constraints on these predictions. Hence, geochemists at Utrecht investigate both modern and ancient environments. Most current research activities at the Department are interdisciplinary and rely on active collaborations with, among others, oceanographers, microbiologists, environmental chemists, and hydrologists. New module on Geochemical Instrumentation and Analysis
This project provides an on-line tutorial of the analytical techniques commonly used to characterize geological materials. The goal is to help novices (such as students or scientists working out of their field) to gain an understanding of mineralogical, petrological and geochemical analytical techniques. This module covers X-ray crystallography electron microbeam elemental analysis mass spectrometers and more. See the entire list of techniques covered on this site.
New module on Teaching Phase Equilibria
This web-based learning resource provides a comprehensive introduction to heterogeneous phase equilibria in the geosciences. This site contains the essential background information needed to understand phase equilibria, links to related resources, examples of worked problems, and teaching activities. Some of the highlights of this module include:
    • Descriptions, definitions and worked examples of standard topics like the

    About the IAGC
The IAGC (International Association of GeoChemistry, formerly known as the International Association of Geochemistry and Cosmochemistry) is affiliated with the International Union of Geological Sciences and has been one of the pre-eminent internati onal geochemical organizations for over thirty-five years. The principal objective of the IAGC is to foster co-operation in, and advancement of, geochemistry in the broadest sense. This is achieved by:
  • working with any interested group in planning symposia and other types of meetings related to geochemistry , sponsoring publications in geochemistry of a type not normally covered by existing organizations and, the activities of working groups which study problems that require, or would benefit from, international co-operation.
  • The scientific thrust of the IAGC takes place through its Working Groups (many of which organize regular symposia) and the official journal , APPLIED GEOCHEMISTRY Download the IAGC Mission Statement here.
