We are the UK Government's advisory body on new developments in human genetics and how they impact on individual lives. We give the Government advice on human genetics with a particular focus on the social, ethical and legal issues. One of our key roles is to promote debate and to listen to what the public and our stakeholders have to say. We are committed to openness and transparency. The Commission is made up of twenty-two members including experts in genetics, ethics, law and consumer affairs. The acting Chair is Sir John Sulston. We also have a Consultative Panel of people who have direct experience of living with genetic disorders and who act as a sounding board for our reports and recommendations.

    Students will understand the following:
Because of their identical genetic makeup, identical twins who have been raised separately are ideal subjects for experiments that evaluate the effects of genes versus the effects of environment on human personality development. Materials No special materials needed Procedures nature you mean hereditary genetic makeup and that by nurture you mean the things that happen to a person after birth, including treatment by parents, peers, community, and society. Let students know that another name for the nature-nurture controversy is the heredity-versus-environment controversy. Then encourage students to express their views on the issue and give reasons for their views. Ask students if they can think of a way to construct an experiment, in a scientifically valid way, that will shed light on the controversy they have been discussing. Guide the discussion toward twin studies, or the study of pairs of identical twins that have been raised apart.

Genetics Practice Problems You may type in your own answers, then check to see if you were right. If you’re totally stumped, you can tell the computer to show you the answer to a particular question. Monohybrid Cross: In humans, brown eyes (B) are dominant over blue (b)*. A brown-eyed man marries a blue-eyed woman and they have three children, two of whom are brown-eyed and one of whom is blue-eyed. Draw the Punnett square that illustrates this marriage. What is the man’s genotype? What are the genotypes of the children? (* Actually, the situation is complicated by the fact that there is more than one gene involved in eye color, but for this example, we’ll consider only this one gene.)
If blue is recessive, what must the woman’s genotype be?
If that’s her genotype, what kind(s) of gametes (eggs) can she produce?
    and/or
If the man has brown eyes, but has a blue-eyed child what must his genotype be?
(if you don’t understand why, review the testcross problem)
If that’s his genotype, what kind(s) of gametes (sperm) can he produce?
    and/or
    If they have children:
Put the female gametes in the correct locations
Put the male gametes in the correct locations Put the genotypes of the offspring in the correct locations ½ of their children would be expected to be heterozygous brown and ½ homozygous blue.

    The Genome in High Resolution
By Brandon Keim Categories: Genetics An ambitious plan to sequence and compare the genomes of 1,000 people promises to provide scientists with the most detailed picture yet of human genetic variation. The 1000 Genomes Project, announced today and led by scientists from around the world, builds on the groundbreaking HapMap project. Launched in 2002, HapMap spotlighted regions of the genome that vary from person to person. Any two people have 99% identical DNA; it's in the difference that the genetic roots of human development and disease variance exist. By marking "hotspots" where people tend to vary, the HapMap allows scientists to ignore overlap and focus on genomic areas of likely relevance. Whole-genome association studies , considered to be the gold standard of modern genetics, owe their existence to the HapMap. In just a few years they've produced insights into whole networks of genes that appear implicated in many diseases, and have largely supplanted a hunt-for-a-single-gene model that geneticists now consider outdated. But for all its virtues, the HapMap is relatively limited: it only compared genomes from people in Nigeria, China and Japan, as well as people of Western European ancestry in the United States.
