For the scientific journal, see Genetics (journal) For a generally accessible and less technical introduction to the topic, see Introduction to genetics DNA , the molecular basis for inheritance. Each strand of DNA is a chain of nucleotides , matching each other in the center to form what look like rungs on a twisted ladder. Genetics is the science of heredity and variation in living organisms Knowledge of the inheritance of characteristics has been implicitly used since prehistoric times for improving crop plants and animals through selective breeding . However, the modern science of genetics, which seeks to understand the mechanisms of inheritance, only began with the work of Gregor Mendel in the mid-1800s. Although he did not know the physical basis for heredity, Mendel observed that inheritance is fundamentally a discrete process with specific traits that are inherited in an independent manner — these basic units of inheritance are now called genes Following the rediscovery of Mendel's observations in the early 1900s, research in 1910s yielded the first physical understanding of inheritance — that genes are arranged linearly along large

Humans began applying knowledge of genetics in prehistory with the domestication and breeding of plants and animals. In modern research, genetics provides important tools in the investigation of the function of a particular gene, e.g. analysis of genetic interactions . Within organisms , genetic information generally is carried in chromosomes , where it is represented in the chemical structure of particular DNA molecules

No field of science has changed more, or changed the world more, in the last 50 years than genetics - the study of how our physical and behavioural traits are inherited The field's crowning achievement may have been the spelling out of our genetic secrets by the human genome project , but scientific and technological advances in genetics have forever transformed agriculture biology medicine zoology , and even fields such as anthropology and forensic science Why certain features of parents and even more distant relatives appear or do not appear in individual people, plants, parasites and protozoa has fascinated and confused people for millennia. This observation has also spawned a remarkable variety of theories of heredity , from pangenesis to Lamarckism . http://genetics.med.harvard.edu/
Welcome to the Department of Genetics, Harvard Medical School. Reflecting the breadth of the field itself, the Department of Genetics consists of faculty working on diverse problems using a variety of approaches and model organisms, unified in their focus on the genome as an organizing principle for understanding biological phenomena. Genetics is not perceived simply as a subject, but rather as a way of viewing and approaching biological phenomenon. While the range of current efforts can best be appreciated by reading the research interests of individual faculty the scope of the work conducted in the Department includes (but is by no means limited to) human genetics of both single gene disorders and complex traits, development of genomic technology, cancer biology, developmental biology, signal transduction, cell biological problems, stem cell biology, computational genetics, immunology, synthetic biology, epigenetics, evolutionary biology, and plant biology. The mission of the Department encompasses research and education while serving as a focal point for drawing together and integrating basic and clinical genetic efforts conducted across the University and its affiliated hospitals. The Department of Genetics is strongly committed to supporting its current community of faculty, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students and to securing the best new scientists, setting its sight on new research opportunities in the future.
