The Powell Gene Therapy Center (PGTC) at the University of Florida (UF) PGTC has been a pioneer in several ways:
  • Discovery of the unique life cycle of AAV (Dr. Kenneth Berns) First use of AAV to deliver genes to cells in culture (Dr. Nicholas Muzyczka) First use of AAV in animals and humans (Dr. Terry Flotte) First use of AAV to in models of muscle and heart disease (Dr. Barry Byrne) First use of AAV to reverse blindness in dogs with a genetic disease (Dr. Bill Hauswirth) Active clinical trials in CF patients since 1996, including two that are currently enrolling patients (Dr. Terry Flotte) A clinical trial in AAT deficiency (genetic emphysema) to begin in early 2004 (Drs. Terry Flotte and Mark Brantly) The PGTC has competed successfully for federal funding in numerous arenas:
UF has just been named one of only two National Gene Vector Laboratory (NGVL) Toxicology Centers by the National Center for Research Resources, a Division of NIH

Welcome to the Institute of Gene Therapy at the Hadassah Medical Center Preamble Gene therapy is a fascinating and growing research field of translational medicine. The basic biological understanding of tissue function, cellular events, metabolic processes, stem cell function, are all linked to the genetic code and to the genetic material in all species. In mammalians as in more simple creatures, each and every phenotype structural characterizations, function and probably behavior is dependent on the special nature and timing of genetic material and events. In altering the genetic material of somatic cells, gene therapy may correct the underlying specific disease pathophysiology. In some instances, it may offer the potential of a onetime cure for devastating, inherited disorders. In principle, gene therapy should be applicable to many diseases for which current therapeutic approaches are ineffective or where the prospects for effective treatment appear exceedingly low. Our desire for deep understanding of human nature will encourage us to develop new therapeutic platforms in the years to come.

Gene therapy gets injured mice moving again
Tissue grafts and healing gene help repair ruptured tendons, study shows
By By Steve Mitchell Special to msnbc.com A combination of gene therapy and tissue grafts could offer an improved way to repair ruptured tendons and ligaments, including common sports injuries such as season-ending knee and shoulder problems, according to a new study in mice. Tendons are difficult to repair surgically, but a strategy of implanting tendons that were loaded with genes to enhance recovery resulted in such significant improvements in injured mice that it could pave the way for future clinical trials in humans, said Hani Awad, a biomedical engineer at the University of Rochester Medical Center who led the study that was published online this week by the scientific journal Molecular Therapy. The mouse model was intended to represent a common hand injury involving the rupture of the flexor tendon, which allows fingers to bend and straighten. The injury, which generally occurs when a hand is crushed or lacerated, affects millions of people each year. But the strategy could also be applied to other tendons and ligaments, such as the rotator cuff in the shoulder and the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in the knee.

Promotes basic and clinical research in gene therapy in Sweden and Europe.
http://www.ssgt.org/
Welcome ! The aims of the Swedish Society for Gene Therapy (SSGT) are to promote basic and clinical research in gene therapy, to foster education and the exchange of information and technology related to gene transfer and therapy, and to inform general public about basic aspects and recent developments of gene therapy, and to serve as a professional adviser to the regulatory bodies in Sweden and Europe. 1st Nordic and 3rd annual meeting in gene and cell therapy March 10-11 Nobel Forum , Karolinska Institute More information Dear members, colleagues and friends The Swedish Society for Gene Therapy in collaboration with the Finnish Gene Therapy Society
are initiating a 1st Nordic meeting as a joint meeting with the 3rd annual SSGT meeting. Our
ambition is to bring together all the Gene Therapy Societies to strengthen the Nordic interaction within the field of Gene and Cell therapy. The meeting will have a focus on giving young scientists and PhD students a chance to present their research to a large audience. For senior scientists and group leaders this is an excellent opportunity to find new post-docs for their labs. Everyone that submits an abstract will be asked to either give an oral presentation (10min) or present a poster. The meeting will be located at Nobel Forum at the Karolinska Institutet in Solna, and are easily reach from any central part of Stockholm. More information
