In 1961, Ascher Shapiro founded the National Committee for Fluid Mechanics Films (NCFMF) in cooperation with the Educational Development Center and released a series of 39 videos and accompanying texts which revolutionized the teaching of fluid mechanics. The preface to Illustrated Experiments in Fluid Mechanics: The NCFMF Book of Film Notes can be found below. MIT's iFluids program has made a number of the films from this series available on the web. (Click to enlarge) Preface This volume contains text and photographic material related to the sound films prepared under the direction of the National Committee for Fluid Mechanics Films (NCFMF). The films, and the related text material herein, cover nearly all of the fundamental phenomena of fluid motions.
Formed in 1961, the NCFMF functions in collaboration with Educational Development Center, Inc. (EDC) in Newton, Massachusetts, formerly Educational Services Incorporated. The NCFMF, a self-constituted group of eleven university faculty members interested in education and active in various branches of fluid mechanics, was responsible for the general structure of the film program, for the substantive content, and for the creation of this volume. Education Development Center was responsible for film production, for a part of the editing and composition of this book, and also provided administrative and laboratory services. Funding was provided mainly by the National Science Foundation, with some contribution by the Office of Naval Research. The program was completed in 1969.

Geophysical and Astrophysical Fluid Dynamics exists for the publication of original research papers and short communications, occasional survey articles and conference reports on the fluid mechanics of the earth and planets, including oceans, atmospheres and interiors, and the fluid mechanics of the sun, stars and other astrophysical objects. In addition, their magnetohydrodynamic behaviours are investigated. Experimental, theoretical and numerical studies of rotating, stratified and convecting fluids of general interest to geophysicists and astrophysicists appear. Properly interpreted observational results are also published. All published research articles in this journal have undergone rigorous peer review, based on initial editor screening and anonymized refereeing by independent and expert referees.

WORKSHOP ON GEOMETRY, DYNAMICS AND MECHANICS IN HONOUR OF THE 60th BIRTHDAY OF J.E. MARSDEN
August 7-10, 2002
Audio of talks Photos from Workshop Fields Mail List Schedule ... Visitor Information
ORGANIZING COMMITTEE: A. Bloch P. Newton T. Ratiu S. Shkoller ... A. Weinstein OVERVIEW:
The workshop will be organized along the seven main themes of Professor Marsden's work: (1) Geometric mechanics
(2) Fluid mechanics
(3) Elasticity and analysis
(4) Numerical algorithms
(5) Relativity and quantum mechanics
(6) Geometric control theory
(7) Dynamical systems The common thread running throughout is the use of geometric methods which serve to unify these diverse disciplines and help bring a wide variety of scientists and mathematicians together, speaking a language which encourages cross-fertilization. Professor Marsden is a unique figure in this regard as his work has significantly influenced the three distinctly separate communities of mathematicians, physicists, and engineers.
The workshop will bring together the world's leading figures in each of these seven theme areas who will give invited lectures.

This item usually ships in 2-3 business days About this book About this book This volume collects the contributions of a conference held in June 2005, at the laboratoire Paul Painlev© (UMR CNRS 8524) in Lille, France. The meeting was intended to review hot topics and future trends in fluid dynamics, with the objective to foster exchanges of theoretical and numerical viewpoints. The content of the volume can be split into three categories: A first set of contributions is devoted to the description of the connection between different models of fluid dynamics. An important part of these papers relies on the discussion of the modeling issues, the identification of the relevant dimensionless coefficients, and on the physical interpretation of the models.
