Site Index FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Flourishing Fisheries Science New Bonefish, Tarpon Research Center to improve Florida fisheries VIRGINIA KEY, FL (June 6, 2007) Due to become operational on July 1, the new research center will be housed at the Rosenstiel School and will conduct science-based research that supports fishery management and help to safeguard the current and long-term health of bonefish and tarpon, both of which are very important to the Florida recreational saltwater fishing industry. Bonefish are one of Florida's most valuable fish, accounting for approximately $1 billion annually to the Florida economy via sportsfishing revenue. Likewise, tarpon plays prominently in the $5.5 billion regional draw that sportsfishing brings to the state. In fact, sportsfishing now surpasses the citrus industry in state revenues. Under a three-year collective agreement, funds the partners raise will be pooled to create a larger, more effective financial base to conduct research and have broader management impact. A related goal is to create public awareness through educational and outreach programs. Initial plans call for the new research center to develop comprehensive regional research priorities at three levels with its principal focus in Florida but also the southeastern United States (North Carolina to Texas), and internationally. Funds to support the BTRC will be raised through a variety of individual efforts by each of the partners as well as outreach and marketing programs by the BTRC. These funds will then be distributed in the form of grants issued by the BTRC, overseen by a grant approval committee made up of a representative from each of the partners. Bonefish and Tarpon Unlimited (BTU) will chair the committee and manage the grant process.

SFOS home Fisheries Division Directions in Fisheries Science Research and training A major responsibility of the School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences is training professionals and technicians, needed by (1) marine industries that use Alaska's rich resources, and (2) public agencies charged with conserving those resources. We have a high faculty-to-student ratio, conducive to preparing excellent researchers and managers (14 professors supervise about 50 graduate students and advise fewer than 50 undergraduate fisheries majors). More than half the graduates stay in Alaska and work for private companies and public agencies. Many students work as professional interns for agencies during their course of study. Study sites Fisheries represents a diverse range of research interests including quantitative fisheries science, fish genetics, fish ecology, and fisheries oceanography. The Genetic Stock Separation Lab is in place at the National Marine Fisheries Service Auke Bay Lab, near the Juneau Center, and salmon aquaculture genetics studies are in progress at our Salmon Broodstock Lab, a cooperative effort with one of the state's private nonprofit companies that produce salmon by ocean ranching. Our faculty have directed field studies on the effect of the Exxon Valdez oil spill, in addition to continued involvement in research supporting fishery managers around Alaska. Field studies are conducted regularly at the Seward Marine Center, Toolik Lake, Glacier Bay, Prince William Sound, Chukchi Sea, Bering Sea, the Arctic Coast, and lakes and rivers throughout the Interior.

National Marine Fisheries Service - the Northeast Stock Assessment Workshop/Stock Assessment Review Committee (SAW/SARC) and the Southeast Data and Assessment Review (SEDAR) . The Commission also periodically conducts independent external peer reviews following a similar process. The Commission has also conducted workshops and developed educational materials to provide hands-on training to state fishery biologists in quantitative population dynamics and stock assessment models. High level workshops have also been conducted for those state and federal stock assessment scientists in order to facilitate an exchange of information and provide advanced training in uncertainty principles and state-of-the-art modeling techniques. Layman educational seminars are also periodically conducted for fisheries managers and stakeholders to increase the understanding of these complex models. The Commission has initiated projects to improve the compilation of fisheries-dependent and fisheries-independent data. The original focus of this project is American lobster, but it is anticipated that other species will be included in the future. The electronic linkage of these data, with basic data manipulation, will increase the speed with which Commission stock assessments can be conducted.

(Press Conference: Saturday Feb. 19th, 1:00 PM Eastern) – In a scientific double whammy, researchers report that fishing pressure is causing fish to evolve to smaller sizes, just as new studies show that larger fish are critical to sustaining populations. In species such as Pacific rockfish, the big, old females not only produce exponentially more eggs than younger, smaller females, but their hearty larvae have a far greater chance of survival. Keeping these big fish in the water increases the chances of strong population numbers in the next generation – which is paramount to the recovery of overfished stocks. Representing three fisheries science sessions from the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) meeting, Steve Berkeley of UC Santa Cruz, Larry Crowder of Duke University, Andy Rosenberg of the University of New Hampshire and a member of the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy, and Jeremy Jackson of Scripps Institution of Oceanography highlight the latest advances in genetics, biology, and evolutionary science that point to new strategies for maintaining fisheries.
