Overview
The Fisheries Science and Management Research Group is part of the graduate program in the School of Resource and Environmental Management (REM) at Simon Fraser University (SFU), located in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada. Our overall objective is to improve the understanding and management of fish populations through research on marine and freshwater systems, including not only fishes, but also marine mammals, invertebrates, and their habitats. Our research focuses on challenging scientific topics that are directly applicable to fisheries management.
Graduate Research in Fisheries Science
Graduate students in REM can obtain Master's or Ph.D. degrees that focus on applied fisheries science and management. In the REM graduate program , a unique interdisciplinary structure enables students to develop additional expertise in related areas such as resource economics, simulation modelling and statistics, risk assessment and decision analysis, benefit-cost analysis, environmental contaminants, conflict resolution, and environmental law. An optional Cooperative Education program allows REM students to gain work experience in a management agency or private firm before they graduate.

NOAA Foundations : Fisheries Science and Technology
The Foundations of Fisheries Science
NOAA is dedicated to the protection of living marine resources through science-based conservation and management and the promotion of healthy ecosystems. As a steward, NOAA conserves, protects, and manages living marine resources in a way that ensures their continuation as functioning components of marine ecosystems, affords economic opportunities, and enhances the quality of life for the American public. Dutch Harbor and other Alaskan ports are part of the massive North Pacific groundfish industry. Click image for larger view. Fish and fisheries have always been important to Americans. Fish fed the Native Americans, drew the first Colonists to the continent, and provided one of America's most important industries. All of these activities place increasing demand on fish populations. Early in the history of our country, there was recognition of the importance of balancing these demands with the health of fisheries. Because resource-based decisions are best based on science, the sound management of fish populations has required the evolution of the field of fisheries biology. This article looks at some of the major scientific advances made by the U.S. Commission of Fish and Fisheries, the predecessor organization to NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service, from its beginnings in the early 1800s.

    Fisheries Science Services
Fisheries Science Services research, assess and advise on the sustainable exploitation of the marine fisheries resources in the waters around Ireland. These waters contain some of the most productive fishing grounds in the world with International fishing fleets operating here landing around 700,000 tonnes of fish in 2004, worth  €500 million. These waters are important fish spawning and nursery grounds and their ‘Biological Sensitivity ’ is recognised internationally. To ensure the sustainable exploitation of this valuable fisheries resource and to protect the sensitive habitats in which they live, fisheries science is becoming a more ‘broader based’ science that will link into the concept of ‘ocean management’ and not just ‘fisheries management’. Linking fisheries data with oceanographic, sea bed mapping and climate change data; examining predator prey relationships and interacting with stakeholders are all important components of a new form of ‘ocean management advice’ which comes under the umbrella of the ‘ecosystem approach’. This approach considers all marine related activities such as fishing, gravel extraction and leisure use in a specific area (e.g. the Irish Sea) and provides advice in this context.

Introduction
NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service, founded in 1871 as the U.S. Commission on Fish and Fisheries, is the Nation's oldest Federal conservation agency. As such, it has been publishing the results of its research for more than 125 years, and the tradition of scientific publishing is continued today by the NMFS Scientific Publications Office (SPO) in Seattle, Washington. Formal NMFS publications include the quarterly journals, Fishery Bulletin and Marine Fisheries Review, and the NOAA Professional Paper series (formerly NOAA Technical Report series). In addition, the SPO provides technical and administrative editorial support to NMFS headquarters offices, which includes coordinating publication of several series of the NOAA Technical Memoranda NMFS , including Our Living Oceans , and other special publications.

Introduction Fisheries, as the name suggests is an organized effort which is related to the capturing of fish including inland and sea or other aquatic species. This industry involves catching, processing, marketing and conservation of fish. Fisheries Science is an academic discipline of managing and understanding fisheries. This is a multidisciplinary subject that includes the biological study of life, habits and breeding of various species of fish. It also involves farming and husbandry of important fishes and aquatic organisms in fresh water, brackish water and any marine environment. Fisheries aims at developing and maintaining sea wealth. Fisheries are estimated to provide 16% of the world population's protein and India holds the seventh position in the world as regards to the value of fish exports. Around 8 million people of India are directly or indirectly dependent on the fisheries sector. The rapidly developing fishery industry, provides employment not only to the traditional fishermen, but also to the highly skilled personnel engaged in the scientific breeding and management of fisheries. The scope in the field of fishery science is increasing with the development of brackish water and freshwater aquaculture. Because of the country's expansive natural resources, dynamic entrepreneurial skills, this profession is advantageous to the Indian economy also.
