The investigation of living marine resources of the Chesapeake Bay and the Virginia Sea has been a dominating focus of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science / School of Marine Science for over sixty years. In no active subject area has a continuing commitment to research, education and advisory service been so consistent as in Fisheries Science. Today, the Department of Fisheries Science includes faculty with a broad variety of research interests including: finfish, mollusc, crustacean, shark, turtle and marine mammal biology, pathology, parasitology, genetics, and economics. To these research areas, faculty members bring classical skills in ecology, systematics, statistics, population dynamics, physiology, molecular biology, economics, and more. Scientific information and technical advice based on the experience and expertise of members of the department is provided to the Commonwealth of Virginia , the nation, and the international community on subjects ranging from resource management through vessel operation and product handling to market development.

The Southeast Fisheries Science Center conducts multi-disciplinary research programs to provide management information to support national and regional programs of NMFS; and to respond to the needs of Regional Fishery Management Councils, Interstate and International Fishery Commission, Fishery Development Foundations, government agencies, and the general public.
The Center provides supervisory and administrative support to large marine ecosystems programs performing fishery research, collecting and reporting on statistical data and controlling and operating Center data management support systems. It develops the scientific information base required for fishery resource conservation, fishery development and utilization, habitat conservation, and protection of marine mammals and endangered species, the impact analyses and environmental assessments for management plans and/or international negotiations; and pursues research to answer specific needs in the subject areas of population dynamics, fishery economics, fishery engineering, food science, and fishery biology.

  • Scientists Quantify Pacific Salmon Extinction Posted: January 17, 2008 In a recently published paper, researchers from the Center's Conservation Biology Division measured the extinction levels and resulting loss in biodiversity among native Pacific salmon populations that spawn in the waters from California to British Columbia. As a result of dams and other human alterations to aquatic habitat, scientists determined that almost 30% of historic salmon populations are now extinct, and more than one-third of the remaining populations are listed under the Endangered Species Act. AOS : Fisheries Science
Fisheries Science is multidisciplinary, drawing expertise from the biological, physical, and social sciences. Fisheries scientists study populations and communities of aquatic resources, their responses to exploitation, and changes in environmental conditions, and their management. Research is quantitative and may be either basic or applied. A diversity of faculty talent exists within the University System of Maryland to provide graduate students with a strong education in ecology, biology, and management of fish and invertebrate resources.
The multidisciplinary nature of fisheries science requires broad training in areas that may include ecology, oceanography, aquaculture, economics, mathematics, seafood technology, pathology and diseases, and management science. Students will select a curriculum, with assistance from their Research Advisory committees, to best achieve their academic and professional goals. The faculty recognizes that flexible, yet rigorous, curriculum choices are important for students in fisheries science.
Graduates may expect to find challenging career opportunities. Most career opportunities in fisheries science are in the government and academic sectors, although in recent years private businesses, research firms and aquaculture businesses offer increasingly diverse career choices.

Fishing has been a major visitor activity for well over a century. Because of this history, fishing continues to be allowed and can complement, and in some cases even enhance, the park’s primary purpose to preserve natural environments and native species.

The facility is comprised of two laboratory/office buildings and support buildings housing raceway and circular tanks. A 49-foot vessel, the R/V Victor Loosanoff, is also docked at the Laboratory for nearshore research. Present research emphasizes aquaculture and habitat-related work. A well-integrated aquaculture program includes studies of the culture of fish and shellfish to develop methods suitable for commercial use as well as for stock enhancement and restoration. Nearshore habitats are being studied to determine what characteristics make a habitat suitable for a particular species. Hot Topics...
