Exobiology Branch, Code SSX
Exobiology research investigates the origins, evolution, distribution, and future of life in the universe. The research is interdisciplinary in nature, combining life sciences, chemistry, physics, astronomy, and geology.
Organizational Overview The branch provides expertise in mineralogical characterizations, life detection, microbial ecology, analog environments, and planetary protection. Capabilities The Exobiology Branch provides interdisciplinary expertise in the life sciences, chemistry, physics, astronomy, and geology. Exobiology Branch scientists contribute to Agency missions directly through their proposals and by providing science requirements definition, project management, field testing of instrument prototypes in analog environments, verification testing and review, and contractor oversight. The Branch also contributes in the development of research announcements. Members serve on peer review panels, and Branch scientists assist in formulating agency objectives and roadmaps.
Projects The NASA Center for Astrobioinformatics, provides information technology and data mining for Astrobiology missions and research.

Exobiology and the case for life on Mars
I. Exobiology
definition: Exobiology is the study of life outside that known on today's Earth. As a discipline it is pretty much defined by a funding program with NASA's Space Sciences which includes studies in early life on earth, abiogenesis (origins of life studies) , SETI (the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, and more recently, the study of martian meteorites.
II. the Viking Mission
In the 1970's two very successful NASA missions sent 2 surface landers to Mars. What they found was a desert-like landscape strewn with volcanic ejecta and shifting sands. The Viking landers were equipped for three experiments designed to test for signs of life on the planet's surface. However, since the GCMS found no organic compounds at its detection limits (a few parts per billion), the initial positive results of the Viking experiments soon became moot. A. The experiments

May 27th, 2006, under algae astrobiology exobiology meteorology ... Space Bat blood? Fungal spores? Dust from Arabia? Algae? A few years back roughly 50 tons of something red fell on India. I remember the news, and I remember how no one had an explanation. What I do not remember, however, is the point when I forgot about the whole issue. Now Popular Science has run an article on the phenomenon , and it seems that after five years of testing, no one is still certain. But the number one explanation sounds interesting: it came from outer space. Comments (0)

Offers Research Group: Photo- und Exobiology In the last decades the number of organisms discovered at locations, which would have been classified still recently as 'life-hostile', has increased immensely. Examples of such 'extremophile' terrestrial organisms are microorganisms from hot springs, hydrothermal vents, deserts, permafrost, salt crystals, very acid or basic water. The increasing knowledge of the adaptability and its fundamental molecular mechanisms enable the estimation of the hypothetical viability on other planets in our solar system, e.g. on Mars.
Mechanisms of microbial resistance and adaptability
The basis of the manifold metabolic processes induced in microorganisms after exposure to various kinds of stress is investigated at the molecular level. Full article
Life under extreme environmental conditions
For laboratory experiments under simulated planetary and space conditions the Planetary and Space Simulation Facilites (space simulation test beds) of the Radiation Biology Division have been further improved by the integration of a new high-energy solar simulator as well as the set-up and adaptation of a data acquiring and processing unit allowing the remote control of different test chambers in parallel.
