The Exobiology Branch conducts research in Exobiology seeking to increase our knowledge of the origin, evolution, and distribution of life in the universe. Answers are sought to questions such as: To what extent did chemical evolution occur in the primitive bodies of the solar system? How did life originate on the Earth, and what role did minerals play? What evidence exists regarding the early interplay between biological and environmental evolution? What do molecular fossils tell us about early microbial evolution? How can the study of contemporary microbes or geochemical samples inform us of past events? The work of the staff in this Branch also provides the conceptual basis and measurement criteria for future spacecraft missions to other solar system bodies such as Mars, Titan, and comets, in search of answers to such fundamental questions in non-terrestrial settings. Introduction to Exobiology
You're driving in your car down dark road late one night with your friends. All of a sudden, you see a large circular object with blue lights spinning right in front of your car. A bright spotlight shines down on your car for ten seconds, and then leaves. As the object disappears before your eyes, you are left in amazement, wondering what just happened. Was that really a UFO? Is there really intelligent life out there in the universe? You turn around to ask your friends, only to find that one of them is missingÉ
Sound a little farfetched? OK. How about something a little more down to Earth.
You just got back from a two week vacation in Hawaii with your family. You walk into your room, throw down your suitcase, and sit on your bed. You glance over at the lamp on the table next to your bed. Reaching over to turn on the lamp, you notice a rather unpleasant smell. Looking down, there is a half full glass of what once might have been juice, but now is a nice bluish-green color with fuzz all around the edges. Yuck! Where did that come from?
Scientists have been asking these same questions for a long time now. Come explore the field of exobiology, the search for the origin of life on the Earth, and in the Universe.

From Primordial Soup to the Prebiotic Beach An interview with exobiology pioneer, Dr. Stanley L. Miller , University of California San Diego By Sean Henahan, Access Excellence Join the exobiology discussion 1n 1953, a University of Chicago graduate student named Stanley Miller working in Harold Urey's lab flipped a switch sending electric current through a chamber containing a combination of methane, ammonia, hydrogen and water. The experiment yielded organic compounds including amino acids, the building blocks of life, and catapulted a field of study known as exobiology into the headlines. Since that time a new understanding of the workings of RNA and DNA, have increased the scope of the subject. Moreover, the discovery of prebiotic conditions on other planets and the announcement of a bacterial fossil originating on Mars has brought new attention to the study of life's origins. I spoke with Dr. Miller in his lab at UCSD about the field he has helped to make famous, exobiology.
Let start with the basics. Can you give a simple definition of exobiology?

    A BIT OF BIOPHYSICS
Prior to my lecture on exobiology, we should review some biological concepts that are very important for the comprehension of the exobiology since the last century. I will start with the operational definition of life:
From the viewpoint of Biophysics, life is a state of the energy in some quasi-stable systems determined by a series of intervals that delay the spontaneous dispersion of the internal energy of those quasi-stable systems toward more potential microstates
    An operational definition
An operational definition is generally designed to model a conceptual definition , to be precise, by using words and concepts to describe a variable.
Phase Space is the space at which all the possible states of a system are represented. The phase space is produced by the general positions and their corresponding conjugated moments.
A conjugated moment derives from the difference between the kinetic energy and the potential energy in relation to an integral coordinate.
Delaying is not the same as revert; although revert could cause a delay, it is not the behavior of processes or states in nature. Many authors say that life involves a violation of the second law of thermodynamics, or that it follows trajectories against entropy, which is not factual. The referred law indicates that the energy always flows from a space or system with a high density of energy toward another space or system with a lower density of energy, which is precisely how life occurs. The Universe has a higher density of energy than that of the biosystems. If it were not thus, then life would not be possible.

Exobiologists investigate how the formation of stars and solar systems led to the existence of planets suitable for life, how life originated on Earth and perhaps elsewhere, and which factors influenced biological evolution. The understanding of these events shape the study of how life arises and evolves in the universe. Earth is the only planet that we know harbors life. Exobiologists can use their knowledge about life on Earth to begin their search for life elsewhere. All known life on Earth is based on the element

    Exobiology
Of all mysteries of the universe, the possibility of meeting other intelligent species must be the most provocative. It would be the greatest achievement in the History of humankind to contact other intelligent species. Unfortunately, as I debate below, I don't know whether we would survive.
    Galactic Civilizations
Geological time is in the order of millions of years. Life, which depends on the chemistry and conditions of a planet, also follows such large cosmological scales. Thus other intelligent species in the universe are not likely to be in the Bronze Age or in any age that happened to us in the last thousands of years. Possibly, if they are less intelligent than us, they would still be animals. But if we are to face a more advanced civilization they will be millions of years ahead of us because, by chance, they originated millions of years before. At a cosmological time scale, energy manipulation is a good method to classify a civilization. Nikolai Kardashev and Freeman Dyson developed the following classification for alien civilizations:
Type Level of Energy Control I Absolute control over a planet's energy.

Scientific advances have enabled us to detect life in the most unexpected places. The existence of living organisms in some of Earth’s most extreme environments has led to serious consideration of their existence elsewhere in the universe.
Since Earth is as yet the only planet where life is known to have developed in all its diversity, scientists use it as a starting point in their search throughout the solar system for signs of organic activity—the carbon-based elements capable of generating new life systems.
    Jargon Organic
In biology, the term organic applies to anything involving organs, living tissues and—by extension—organized life forms.
Organic chemistry, as opposed to mineral chemistry, deals with the study of compounds and in particular carbon compounds. What’s the connection? The basic building blocks of life, such as proteins and nucleic acids, consist of chains of elements based on carbon compounds.

Terrestrial Planet Finder. Astrobiology is an idea in search of data. Many scientists expect that life is common, probably having come into existence on millions of planets. However, astrobiology is a speculative field within biology; nobody has evidence for extraterrestrial life. Astrobiology includes the concept of artificial life, since any life form with human-like intelligence could conceivably create artificial life in a laboratory. Such artificial life might be more suitable than a biological organism for interstellar travel. While currently funded efforts in astrobiology focus on planetary exploration and attempts to detect planets with Earth-like atmospheres, it has been suggested that we should also look closely at Earth for signs that alien artificial life is already here.

    EXOBIOLOGY
or astrobiology, search for extraterrestrial life within the solar system and throughout the universe. Philosophical speculation that there might be other worlds similar to ours dates back to the ancient Chinese and Greeks. However, the achievements of space exploration and molecular biology have turned speculation into experimentation. Parameters of a Suitable Environment for Life There are six basic parameters that determine whether an environment is suitable for life as we know it: temperature, pressure, salinity, acidity, water availability, and oxygen content. Advanced life is restricted to a narrow range of these parameters, but primitive microorganisms exist over a much wider range. Data already collected by space probes essentially rule out advanced life on other planets of our solar system; however, given the potential number of planetary systems in the galaxy, there may be as many as 50,000 planets that have earthlike conditions, a fraction of which could have cultures as technologically advanced as our own. Three decades of passive listening with radio telescopes have produced no signals comparable to those radiating from earth, but we do not know if another civilization would produce electromagnetic radiation in detectable amounts.
