Evolution and Texas

Published: December 4, 2007 As Ralph Blumenthal reported in The Times yesterday, Ms. Comer forwarded to a local online community an e-mail message from a pro-evolution group announcing a talk by Barbara Forrest, a professor of philosophy at Southeastern Louisiana University. Professor Forrest testified as an expert witness in a 2005 Dover, Pa., case that found intelligent design supernatural and theological and definitely not part of a scientific education. An hour later, Ms. Comer was called in by superiors, pressured to send out a retraction and ultimately forced to resign. Her departure was instigated by a new deputy commissioner who had served as an adviser to George Bush when he was governor of Texas and more recently worked in the federal Department of Education.

  • The Measure of "Fitness" In 1859 the English naturalist Charles Darwin published The Origin of Species . The book contained two major arguments: First, Darwin presented a wealth of evidence of evolution natural selection Evolution involves two interrelated phenomena:
    • adaptation Over the course of time, species modify their phenotypes in ways that permit them to succeed in their environment. This page is devoted to looking at how evolution leads to adaptation.
    • speciation Over the course of time, the number of species multiplies; that is, a single species can give rise to two or more descendant species. In fact, Darwin maintained that all species are related; that is, any two species on earth today have shared a common ancestor at some point in their history. The process of speciation is examined in a separate page. Link to it.

    • Thus living things face a constant struggle for existence
    • The individuals in a population vary in their phenotypes

Evolution
It is generally accepted that the astonishing diversity of life on our planet is the result of a process called evolution , which drives organisms to change gradually over time . While the basic concept of organisms evolving is not a difficult one, understanding how evolution works, and how evolutionary theory was developed, is more complex. The Great Debate Schools Programme Use the following gateway if you are taking part in our Great Debate Schools Programme or are interested in finding out about how your students can leap into the roles of the scientists and theologians who debated about evolutionary theory over a hundred years ago. What is evolution? Evolution can loosely be defined as genetic change over time, but there is much more to it than that. What is the evidence?

Chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) What is evolution? Biological evolution is the change that species (kinds of living things) undergo over time. More precisely, it is the change in the gene pools of living populations of species which occurs over time. A gene is a hereditary unit that can be passed on unaltered for many generations. A gene pool is the set of all genes in a species or population. What do you mean by “Evolution Happens”? Evolution has happened, evolution is happening and evolution will continue to happen! Isn't it true that evolution is only a theory? The popular use and scientific use of the term "theory" are very different! A scientific theory, resulting from the application of the scientific method, is an explanation for a phenomenon or set of phenomena based on extensive evidence and testing. The scientific method is a well-recognized and well-defined series of steps used to acquire an explanation for observed phenomena. A preliminary generalization, or hypothesis, is formed on the basis of careful observation of the phenomenon being studied. This hypothesis is then tested by further observations and experiments. If the information gathered from observations and experiments over time satisfies the conditions of the hypothesis, the hypothesis eventually becomes accepted as a scientific theory. For example, the atomic theory of matter states that matter is composed of particles called atoms in various arrangements. The theory of evolution is the only explanation for the origin of life that accounts for the fossil, anatomical, molecular (including genetic), behavioral and geological evidence. Although they continue to argue over the details of exactly how the various mechanisms of evolution operate, biologists long ago concluded that evolution happens. This is because evolution explains all of the evidence far better than all other proposed explanations for the origin of life.

Chapter 1
In troductory
The word evolution is used in theosophy to denote the universal process by which everything is brought into being; and consequently the subject, if treated in full, would be much too large for a single manual; besides which, the student would be overwhelmed with the vastness of the subject and confused with a mass of details. What we must do, therefore, is to present a broad outline of the subject as a whole and to confine our more detailed treatment to special branches of it, such as the evolution of man and the animals, the Darwinian theory, and similar matters of general interest. And this plan will of course involve the making of approximate statements, true as far as they go, yet not the whole truth. In short, we pursue the usual method adopted by students of any science, and that is to begin with an elementary course and leave the higher course to a later time.

50. Evolution
evolution proceeds from simpler forms to the more complex. The first animals were simple onecelled blobs of protoplasm. Then two-celled animals arose.

Chapter 4
EVOLUTION
How do we know about ancient creatures?
Scientists who study the extinct creatures that once roamed the Earth are called paleontologists. If you were to watch a paleontologist at work, you would probably see him on his hands and knees, methodically and painstakingly examining the surface of the ground. This is because he is looking for fossils , or else he has lost a contact lens.
A fossil is any trace left behind by a living thing. Usually the term refers to mineralized bones, but it can also include teeth, eggs, footprints and unpaid phone bills. By careful analysis, paleontologists can often reconstruct an entire animal from just a tiny fragment of bone. (right) By collecting and analyzing fossils, paleontologists have succeeded in tracing the entire history of life on Earth, from the first living things to modern man. Of course, there are gaps in the record and minor uncertainties of interpretation. Nevertheless, the overall picture is clearly understood. (left)

What Is Evolution?
Most non-scientists seem to be quite confused about precise definitions of biological evolution. Part of the confusion is because the word "evolution" has many different meanings, depending on the context. When we talk about biology we are thinking about biological evolution and that's the term I want to define here. What do biologists mean when they refer to biological evolution?
One of the most respected evolutionary biologists has recently defined biological evolution as follows:
Douglas J. Futuyma (1998) Evolutionary Biology 3rd ed., Sinauer Associates Inc. Sunderland MA p.4
Evolution is a process that results in heritable changes in a population spread over many generations. This is a good working scientific definition of evolution; one that can be used to distinguish between evolution and similar changes that are not evolution. Another common short definition of evolution can be found in many textbooks:
In fact, evolution can be precisely defined as any change in the frequency of alleles within a gene pool from one generation to the next.

53. What Is Evolution?
Definition of and current thoughts about evolution.
http://www.geocities.com/capecanaveral/lab/2948/evolve.html
Evolution is the process by which all living things have developed from primitive organisms through changes occurring over billions of years, a progression that includes the most advanced animals and plants. Exactly how evolution occurs is still a matter of debate, but that it occurs is a scientific fact. Biologists agree that all living things arose through a long history of changes shaped by physical and chemical processes that are still taking place. It is plausible that all organisms can be traced back to the origin of LIFE from inanimate matter. The most direct proof of evolution is furnished by the science of PALEONTOLOGY, or the study of life in the past through fossil remains or impressions, usually in rock. Additional evidence comes from comparative studies of living animals and plants, including their structure (COMPARATIVE ANATOMY), BIOCHEMISTRY, EMBRYOLOGY, and geographical distribution. Approximately 2 million different species of organisms are now living, but it is estimated that at least 99.9 percent of the species that have ever lived are now extinct and that some 2 billion species have evolved during the past 600 million years. What other evidence does evolution offer in it's favor? Is it the best explanation science has to offer? Let's explore this debate by proceeding to an essay I have written on the subject, an essay titled
