Edition from 5 march 2004
Abbreviations RP rank potential, the capability (perhaps, unrealized) to have high ranks in a hierarchy. HR a human with a high RP. LR the same, with a low RP. HP a human with a high primativeness, who tends to rely on instinctive programs in practice. LP the same, with a low primativeness, so as to be able to behave contrary to instincts. PFI the Principle of Female's Irreplaceability - base of the instinct complex reflecting the high biological value of females to the species. What is the difference between psychology and human ethology? Though they seem alike at the first sight, those disciplines belong to different scientific realms. In general, they don't antagonize, but complete each other. The following main differences between them can be named:
  • Ethology, being a subdivision of biology, is a natural science; psychology is a humanitary discipline, with a bias to philosophy. This implements a principial difference of paradigms(*). For example, ethology is totally materialistic, and psychology doesn't need materialism at all, though it doesn't contradict it.
  • The subject of psychology is mostly a human, always stressing his exclusiveness among other inhabitants of Earth; ethology researches the human as an equal representative of the animal world (may be with a head swollen a bit), widely using the comparison between human behaviour and behavior of other animal species. One may say that psychology is more interested in everything that separates the human from other animals, ethology - in everything that is similar between human and other animals.

These animals may be members of the same species or of different species. Dominance determines which individuals have first choice of resources that are needed to survive and reproduce and that are in limited supply. These resources include food, water, a resting place, or mates. Animals that lose the aggressive encounters or give in to dominant individuals... I. Strategies of simplification The field of Artificial Intelligence has produced so many new conceptsor at least vivid and more structured versions of old conceptsthat it would be surprising if none of them turned out to be of value to students of animal behavior. Which will be most valuable? I will resist the temptation to engage in either prophecy or salesmanship; instead of attempting to answer the question: "How might Artificial Intelligence inform the study of animal behavior?" I will concentrate on the obverse: "How might the study of animal behavior inform research in Artificial Intelligence?" I take it we all agree that in the end we want to be able to describe and explain the design and operation of animal nervous systems at many different levels, from the neurochemical to the psychological and even the phenomenological (where appropriate!), and we want to understand how and why these designs have evolved, and how and why they are modulated in the individual organisms. AI research, like all other varieties of research on this huge topic, must make drastic oversimplifications in order to make even apparent progress. There are many strategies of simplification, of which these five, while ubiquitous in all areas of mind/brain research, are particularly popular in AI:

Orlando. Photo by Aaron Clayton. The other group of scientists studies acquired behavior: how animals and people learn. The field is called behavior analysis, or simply behaviorism. Its best-known founder was B.F. Skinner. There are departments of behavior analysis in universities all over the US and also at universities in South America and Asia. You'll usually find them in the psychology building. I have been interested in the natural behavior of animals all my life. I was one of those children who watches animals, keeps aquariums, collects butterflies and moths, and knows the name and habits of every bird, tree, and wildflower in her neighborhood: a naturalist. In college I discovered Konrad Lorenz's books and found a name for my natural bent: ethology. Watching animals to see what they do. Then, a few years later, I took a job as head dolphin trainer at Sea Life Park, the Hawaiian oceanarium complex pioneered by my husband Tap Pryor. That's when I discovered

Ethological Attachment Theory: A Great Idea in Personality?
Patricia Pendry Northwestern University This paper critically reviews the ethological attachment theory as proposed by Bowlby and Ainsworth in order to examine if attachment theory is a great idea in personality. The most important aspects of attachment theory are presented and two critical questions are posed. The first question is, Can attachment theory be supported by empirical evidence? To answer this question, a variety of studies will be reviewed, each of which examines a specific aspect of attachment theory. The second question is whether the phenomena explained by creators and proponents of ethological attachment theory could have been explained differently, using other psychological mechanisms. These are two criteria that must be met if attachment theory is to be considered a great idea. Attachment is the strong emotional bond that develops between infant and caregiver, providing the infant with emotional security. By the second half of the first year, infants have become attached to familiar people who have responded to their need for physical care and stimulation. How this attachment develops has been a topic of intense theoretical debate. Theories that attempt to explain attachment are abundant but scientifically verifiable explanations have been elusive. How does attachment develop and which factors affect it? Is attachment security a stable factor? How is attachment security measured? These are all questions of great theoretical and practical interest that can be answered from diverse perspectives.
