Uniqueness can be the product of processes that are themselves general to all living matter. When I first encountered the term "evolutionary psychology," I thought it referred to the study of how mind and behavior have evolved. But I was mistaken. In the last decade, evolutionary psychology has come to refer exclusively to research on human mentality and behavior, motivated by a very specific, nativist- adaptationist interpretation of how evolution operates .... This is a strange, anthropocentric usage, akin to identifying human biology with "biology" generally, or describing geography as "astronomy." Introduction Barry Sinervo The research covered in this area introduction encompasses a very large domain. For the sake of convenience, we have divided it in clusters that are listed alphabetically under the conventional labels "animal behavior," "animal cognition," "ethology," "behavioral ecology," "cognitive ecology," "neuroethology," "sociobiology," and "evolutionary psychology." It should be borne in mind throughout that these labels reflect little more than the contingencies of the history of behavioral biology, and that in practice, the boundaries between these sub-areas tend to be quite blurred.

Behaviour-based robotics and artificial ethology
The following are quotes from the introductory paragraphs to chapter two of "Behaviour-based Robotics", Ronald C. Arkin, 1998 (MIT Press):
These three points provide the basis for the point of view that animal behaviour has a lot to offer the robotics community (behaviour-based robotics to be specific), and hints at the potential feedback that such work may offer the biologists. Without actually mentioning the term, this description could just as well be applied to artificial (or computational) ethology . The first point I think to be particularly interesting. In my opinion, the working definition of 'intelligence' it introduces is not particularly controversial - however, the implication of the the phrase '...improve its likelyhood of survival...' for cognitive/autonomous robotics is that without some form of actual physical dependancy on the environment (e.g. 'food' - and I hesitantly add, some form of concept of 'life and death' for the agent concerned), intelligence for an artificially created being means nothing (see a related concept in embodiment: organismic embodiment ). The second point is one which is generally assumed, but not usually explicitly stated, and something which I think is useful to remind oneself of occasionally. The third point I think is self evident, stated many times, and with plenty of examples in the literature. In fact I think it is the basis for most cognitive robotics work.

Does Ethology Throw Any Light on Human Behavior?
Sir Peter Medawar
Although biologists take to it very kindly, the idea that the behavior of animals can throw any light at all upon the behavior of men is so far from self-evident that it would have been regarded with the utmost derision by the more tough-minded philosophers and philosophic thinkers of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries - I mean, by men of the stature of Thomas Hobbes and Samuel Johnson. Dr Johnson, in particular, would have been deeply outraged: `Sir,' he would have said - he certainly would have said that, but what else he would have said can only be conjectural, though I think it might have run: `is not the possession and exercise of moral judgement precisely the distinction between mankind and the brute creation? Show me an earthworm or marmoset that can tell the difference between right and wrong.' Thomas Hobbes would have pointed out - and in chapter 12 of Leviathan did, in effect, point out - that it is only by virtue of characteristics that differentiate civilised mankind from lesser beings that the life of man is anything but `solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short'. Scientists of the twentieth century cannot be expected to quake in their shoes at the thought of the opinion that might have been held of them by eighteenth-century philosophers, however skillful and tough-minded they may have been, for they were simply not in possession of all the information that would have made it possible for them to form a definitive opinion. In particular, they were unaware of the evolutionary descent of man; but even if they had been appraised of it their reaction would probably have been `What of it?' and Dr Johnson, wielding, as ever, the butt-end of his pistol, would have demanded to know what great and illuminating new truth about mankind followed from our realisation of his having evolved.

ISSN (online) 1828-7131 provides publication of research and review articles on all aspects of animal behaviour. Articles should emphasize the significance of the research for understanding the function, ecology, or evolution of behaviour. Research articles may be in the form of full length papers or short research reports. The Editor encourages the submission of short papers containing critical discussion of current issues in the study of animal behaviour. Monograph-length manuscripts on topics of major interest, as well as descriptions of new methods are welcome. A Forum, Letters to Editor and Book Reviews are also included. Also available are Special Issues which are not published periodically and which vary in price according to the issue.

The Very Rev. Dr. James Parks Morton has defined ecology as the "science of the body of Christ through which we of the Earth community learn our sacred connections." From this metaphysical perspective I would define ethology as the science of the spirit of animals through which we of the Earth community learn respect and compassion for all our relations. The objectifying (and objectional) Cartesian/Newtonian umwelt Ethology enables us to better understand the ethos Empathy in animals and altruistic behavior give us biological evidence of an evolutionary process of increasing social and mental complexity converging and giving rise to an innate moral sensibility and capacity to make ethical decisions for the good of the pack (in the wolf) and of the Earth community (for the human), where self-interest through empathy becomes synonymous with the interests of others. Altruistic behavior is thus the most enlightened form of selfishness.

The journal presents papers on field, laboratory, and theoretical studies. In contrast to ethological journals that prefer studies testing explicit hypotheses, the Journal of Ethology publishes both purely descriptive studies with broad implications and in quantitative studies. The journal is published with the Japan Ethological Society, which formed in 1982 with the objectives of advancing and disseminating knowledge of the principles and applications of ethology, and fostering the exchange of scientific information not only among Japanese but also worldwide ethologists.

Our research group "Cognitive Ethology" is based at the German Primate Center in Goettingen, Germany, and linked to the University of Goettingen. We study cognition and communication from an evolutionary and ecological perspective, primarily in nonhuman primates. We focus on three aspects: firstly, we are interested in the information content of vocal signals and the decoding of this information; secondly, we study the development of cognitive and communicative abilities, both from an ontogenetic and a phylogenetic perspective. Third, we investigate how social system, ecology, and phylogenetic descent shape the structure of signaling systems. The ultimate goal of our research program is to contribute to a better understanding of the evolution of language.
