Internships / TA's Estuarine Ecology Internship - Portugal This internship provides the opportunity to participate in applied ecological research on an estuary in south-west Portugal, which faces environmental threats on a number of fronts (including tourist development and recreation pressure). The A Rocha Christian Field Study Centre coordinates surveys under the direction of the scientific director, Will Simonson. The internship will be of three months to one-year duration and is available for a highly qualified graduate in one of the following: estuarine ecology, botany, or zoology. Interns will also have the opportunity to participate in the wider ministry of the centre to students, and will be expected to take part in the varied tasks involved in running the centre. Au Sable Institute will meet international travel costs and A Rocha will provide accommodation. The intern will be assisted to raise support for the stay at A Rocha by material from A Rocha and from Au Sable. Interested persons should apply to the Au Sable Institute Registrar Office. Contact

Many Homer-area and visiting students also took advantage of our summer Discovery Labs, where they learned about Kachemak Bay's marine environment through fun, hands-on activities at lab classroom learning stations. See the Fall 2006 Discovery Lab schedule by visiting our calendar We so appreciate the volunteer assistance in 2006 of Homer science educators Susan Clardy, Martha Briscoe, Leta Simons, and high school intern Simeon Smith!

The book is divided into six parts, with the first reviewing estuaries and estuarine ecology on simulated "trips" through three different estuaries (Massachusetts' North River, Louisiana's Barataria Bay, and Mexico's Laguna de Terminos), wherein readers are introduced to pertinent introductory material, basic definitions, theory, and selected issues. The second section discusses various physical considerations (estuarine geomorphology and chemistry and physical oceanography). Section three reviews estuarine plants (phytoplankton, salt marshes and mangrove swamps, and seagrasses) and primary productivity. Sections four and five, respectively, deal with reduced carbon and its fate in the estuary and the estuarine consumers-zooplankton, the estuarine bottom and benthic subsystem, the nekton, and the role of wildlife (the higher vertebrates-mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians) in estuarine ecosystems.

Note: MLML offers a M.S. in Marine Science. Thie is not the same as the M.S. in Biology, Concentration in Marine Biology offered by the Biology Department at the San Francisco State campus. For further information on these two different degrees, please contact the appropriate advisor at either campus. Students interested in graduate study in Biology are urged to contact the graduate coordinator of the program of interest and correspond directly with faculty members working in the student's area of interest. Cell and Molecular Biology Coordinator: Dr. Diana Chu This program is designed for students preparing for future graduate work as well as those wishing to increase their competency in the fields of cell and molecular biology. It emphasizes the study of cells, cell organelles, macromolecules, and the regulation of their production and interaction. As such, it represents an expanding frontier of research that integrates biochemistry, biophysics, genetics, developmental biology, and cell ultrastructure. The specific course requirements are determined by the student's committee and are based on considerations such as goals, interests, and undergraduate preparation. A strong background in chemistry is highly recommended.
