ERGONOMICS originated at the end of World War II. Upon analyzing military objectives, their successes and failures, scientists finally realized human beings needed to be taken into account in the design process of machinery and equipment, to increase their effectiveness. Ergonomics has since developed into a science concerning itself with human beings and how we function in conjunction with a variety of equipment, products, methods and circumstances.
Professional ergonomists consider a wide range of factors when offering guidance to insure products or services are safe, easy to use, and efficient. Physical attributes such as size, weight, height, strength, skill, speed, and sensory abilities, along with thermal comfort, motion, vibration, posture and workload are analyzed, in an effort to increase performance, prolong endurance and reduce accidents. Ergonomics encompasses all human activity and relies on research and data of a wide variety of disciplines including Anthropometry, Engineering, Biomechanics, Environmental Physics, Body Systems, Physiology, Applied Psychology and Social Psychology.
Work-related injuries and workplace activities involve lifting, carrying, pulling or pushing and bending. Static, unnatural positions and repetitive motions can also be detrimental. Equipment and system designs are often the cause. Ergonomists work to improve the quality of our lives, increase our safety and enhance performance by providing solutions for workstations, tools, equipment, protective wear, cleanliness and worker well-being. Ergonomic programs help management identify hazardous conditions, provide training, analyze data, establish prevention control measures and evaluate progress. Specialties have developed in the field to include Physical Ergonomics, Cognitive Ergonomics and Organizational Ergonomics.

Basic Microscope Ergonomics
Walk into a busy laboratory and it isn't unusual to see microscopes sitting on books, tilted at odd angles, and otherwise propped in a variety of positions to accommodate their users. Microscopes have undergone a remarkable evolution since their invention in the early 1600s, but most of the new developments and improvements have been in the area of contrast enhancement accessories and the microscope optical train. While issues of usability have taken a back seat to optical performance for the past 400 years, they haven't been completely disregarded by microscopists. As early as the 1830s, Sir David Brewster noted in his Treatise on Optics , "The best position for microscopical observations is when the observer is lying horizontally on his back . . . . The worst of all positions is that in which we look downwards vertically." Unfortunately, Sir Brewster's suggestions were never utilized in microscope design and sitting or standing at the instrument became the status quo. While conventional microscope design has not necessarily been a problem for short-term use, long-term sessions have historically created problems for scientists and technicians who used the instruments, making them, quite literally a pain in the neck. Microscopists were expected to suffer for the greater good of science and many have paid the price over the years with physical complaints and sometimes even permanent injuries.

Ergonomics
Ergonomics is matching the job to the worker and product to the user. Ergonomics and human factors are often used interchangeably in workplaces. Both describe the interaction between the worker and the job demands. The difference between them is ergonomics focuses on how work affects workers, and human factors emphasizes designs that reduce the potential for human error. Ergonomic hazards refer to workplace conditions that pose the risk of injury to the musculoskeletal system of the worker. Examples of musculoskeletal injuries include tennis elbow (an inflammation of a tendon in the elbow) and carpal tunnel syndrome (a condition affecting the hand and wrist). Ergonomic hazards include repetitive and forceful movements, vibration, temperature extremes, and awkward postures that arise from improper work methods and improperly designed workstations, tools, and equipment.

Creating an ergonomic workstation is easier than you might think, and the payoff can be huge. These tips and resources can get you on the path to making your workstation more ergonomic and maybe even more productive.
Tips
  • Work Area: When setting up a work area, make sure that the space is large enough for you to spread out comfortably and allows for a full range of motion, which can be a special concern for those with especially long limbs. You should also leave plenty of room to arrange the items you use most frequently in such a way that there is no strain for you to reach them. Laptops:
Keyboard: Mouse: When setting up your desk, make sure to keep your mouse easily within reach and try not to grip it too tightly, as doing so can strain the muscles in your hand. If you find that using a mouse bothers you too much, try using an alternate input device like a trackball or a touch pad.

    - Ergonomics (from the Greek word ergon meaning work , and nomoi meaning natural laws ), is the science of refining the design of products to optimize them for human use. Human characteristics, such as height, weight, and proportions are considered, as well as information about human hearing, sight, temperature preferences, and so on. Ergonomics is sometimes known as human factors engineering. Computers and related products, such as computer desks and chairs, are frequently the focus of ergonomic design. A great number of people use these products for extended periods of time such as the typical work day. If these products are poorly designed or improperly adjusted for human use, the person using them may suffer unnecessary fatigue, stress, and even injury. LAST UPDATED: 03 Sep 2007

    Ergonomic Material Handling Equipment
Cynergy Ergonomics is an ergonomic material handling equipment company specializing in lifting device design, lift assist system designs, material handling vertical lifts, manual ergonomic pick and place systems and workstation improvements for manufacturing, assembly, production and distribution centers that currently use human power for material handling. We also provide automated material handling solutions. Ergonomic material handling equipment is a cost effective and profitable alternative to worker injuries when weights, repetitive movements, working posture or nature of the movement creates injury hazards for the individuals performing these tasks. Ergonomic hazards can result in debilitating injuries, reduced productivity and subsequent loss of work time through rehabilitation. Along with safety concerns, risk management issues are addressed when ergonomic solutions are applied to the work place (reduced workers compensation cost, lower EMR ratings, etc.). Eliminating ergonomic hazards results in:
    • I mproved product and performance quality I ncreases in productivity R eduction in unintentional damage to the finished product and work area equipment I mproved worker morale and lower workforce turnover Improved attendance
Our methodology is to take a consultative approach in applying ergonomically designed lift assists, specialty lifting equipment and other work area ergonomic improvements to address work place health concerns as well as the safety, risk management and productivity needs of clients, with the ultimate goal of providing an injury-free, highly productive labor force.

Brief and Straightforward Guide What is Ergonomic?
    http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-ergonomic.htm
    What is Ergonomic?
ad_unit_target='mainAdUnit'; X Close this window If a product is ergonomic it is specifically designed to be comfortable and easy to use, physically and psychologically. Ergonomic products are often advertised as reducing fatigue and repetitive strain, and boosting productivity. In recent years ergonomics have been associated more and more with computer products, such as ergonomic mice and keyboards. While a standard keyboard is said to place the wrists in an unnatural position, an ergonomic keyboard is split with each half set at an angle to the other, forming a slight V-shape. A more natural posture can be maintained while resting the hands upon an ergonomic keyboard , thus facilitating a comfortable experience even for extended periods of use. However, the simple claim that a design is ergonomic doesn't necessarily make it more comfortable. There is no governing guideline for creating an ergonomic product, and research used for designs can, in some cases, be faulty. This can lead to a product that, by popular standards, is even less comfortable than its traditional counterpart. As an example, in the late 80s a backless ergonomic chair was purportedly less fatiguing. The chair was designed is an inverted S-pattern that allowed one to "kneel-sit." While it might have been technically better for posture on paper, after a short time sitting without back support, many people found it more fatiguing than a traditional chair. Most of these chairs are now made with lumbar support.
