Every day, new insect species are discovered, and studies reveal more about these and the millions of species already identified. For researchers whose work is affected by these findings, Entomology Abstracts , from Cambridge Scientific Abstracts, provides the only practical means to keep up with the field. All research reports of direct relevance to entomology are assembled here, with coverage including:
Entomology Abstracts (1978-present)
provides important information on geographic distribution, nomenclature, new species, and more. From ancient fossilized forms to newly-discovered species, this database gathers and summarizes all the latest information on insects and insect-like species, for truly global coverage of the field. 10,200 abstracts are added per year.

Entomologists at Geneva are dedicated to the protection of horticultural crops from attack by insects and mites. Entomologists study the biology and ecology of crop pests, improved pesticide management procedures, and alternative control strategies to reduce the use of chemicals. A significant part of the crop protection program in New York State is to encourage the practice of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) procedures. Working closely with researchers, farmers, extension agents, and industry, the group has been able to implement many pest control strategies that are effective, economical, and safe. PHEREC is perhaps best known as "the insecticide-testing center" for Florida mosquito control. This reputation came as a result of extensive chemical, equipment and procedural evaluations that have been and continue to be conducted on mosquito adulticides and larvicides. The representation is worldwide and particularly strong in the major orders Coleoptera, Hymenoptera, Lepidoptera, and Diptera. Several historically important collections are housed at Harvard, including the type-rich beetle collections of Horn, LeConte, Melsheimer, Bowditch, Fall, and Darlington. The collections in many smaller orders are also among the most important in North America, i.e., Trichoptera, Odonata, Psocoptera, Neuroptera, and Collembola. The ant collection, alone comprising nearly a million specimens, is the largest and most important in the world. The fossil insect collection is the second most important one in the world. The MCZ Entomological collection was started in 1859 by Samuel Scudder and A.S. Packard, but includes the earlier material of T.W. Harris (the oldest intact North American synoptic insect collection), which was studied and partly determined by the pioneering American entomologist Thomas Say.

Department
Many of the projects within the department involve inter-disciplinary activity. These studies include close cooperation and interaction with soil scientists, plant geneticists, horticulturists, veterinarians, and ecologists. For instance, the department has special interest and expertise in alternative methods of insect and disease management such as biological control, resistant cultivars, integrated pest management, and cultural control techniques, to help meet the need for healthful food production without or with reduced use of pesticides.
Extension Programs
We serve Tennessee clientele throughout the state. Extension programs provide educational information about insect pests and plant diseases. Other on-going programs include, Cooperative Agricultural Pest Survey, Integrated Pest Management, National Pesticide Impact Assessment Program, and Pesticide Safety Education Program....

Emerging From the Chrysalis
(Male Monarch)
Butterflies go through four life stages. The first is the egg which is laid on a host plant leaf by a gravid (pregnant) female butterfly. You can identify the female because her webbing is thicker and she has no identifying wing spot as does the male. The female will only lay her eggs on plants that the resulting caterpillar can eat (usually a milkweed). Once the caterpillar has hatched from the egg, it will eat and grow until it reaches its full size. At that point, it enters the third or pupal stage. The caterpillar forms a structure called a chrysalis in which it will transform into an adult - a butterfly. This is the fourth and final stage.
