J. L. Gressitt Center for Research in Entomology
The Gressit Center houses some 14 million prepared specimens of insects and related arthropods, including over 16,500 primary types, making it the third largest entomology collection in the United States and the eighth largest in the world. While global in scope, the collection's strength lies in its unparalleled holdings of specimens from New Guinea, southeast Asia, the Philippines and Oceania. Unmatched historical and modern holdings from the Hawaiian Islands document the archipelago's highly endemic and often endangered native insect fauna as well as the large contingent of alien species that threaten it. Entomology at the Bishop Museum can be traced back as far as 1892, begining with our support of R.C.L. Perkins and the Fauna Hawaiiensis survey project.

The Department of Entomology at the University of Arizona has an internationally renowned faculty dedicated to excellence in research, teaching, and extension. Faculty expertise encompasses fundamental insect biology, pest management, and outreach. A key department in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Entomology has been generating, synthesizing, and disseminating knowledge about insects for more than a century. The University of Arizona is in Tucson, a lively city surrounded by the beautiful Sonoran Desert. Entomology enjoys excellent research facilities on the main campus in Tucson and throughout the State of Arizona. Some members of the Department of Entomology are affiliated with the Center for Insect Science and the Carl Hayden Honeybee Lab. The Department of Entomology offers several programs of study leading to both Masters and Ph.D. degrees. The University also offers a graduate interdisciplinary program (GIDP) in insect science. The Museum's collection of insects and other terrestrial arthropods, including spiders, mites and myriapods, comprises about 28 million specimens. It is the most comprehensive in the world and includes named representatives of about half of the more than one million described species. About 100 research, curatorial, support staff and postgraduate students work regularly in the department. Our scientists use the collections and other resources, including the Museum's extensive libraries, in a wide range of research projects, covering many parts of the world.

Home English Home Dutch Dutch Thai Insect classification Proverbs and Quotes about insects ... Araneology for beginners Entomology for Beginners Entomology is the study of insects. This page provides some basic information on insects. First a quick look at the anatomy of adult insects. Then a short story about the metamorphosis of insects. Insect anatomy To learn more about the anatomy, click on the different body parts of this insect !! Metamorphosis of insects In their development from egg to adult, insects change in form. The different instars are not alike, which is called metamorphosis. There are two general types of metamorphosis: simple metamorphosis and complete metamorphosis. Simple metamorphosis In simple metamorphosis the wings develop externally during the larval stages. The larval stages, which are called nymphs, look very similar to the adult insect. There is no pupal stage. The figure shows the development from an egg via 5 larval instars to an adult bug. Complete metamorphosis In a complete metamorphosis the wings develop internally during the larval stages. The larval stages look quite different from the adult. Between the last larval stage and the adult stage there is a pupal stage which usually is inactive.

PDF (254 KB/77 pages) West Nile Virus Home Ecology and Virology Entomology Arthropod-borne viruses (termed "arboviruses") are viruses that are maintained in nature through biological transmission between susceptible vertebrate hosts by blood-feeding arthropods (mosquitoes, sand flies, ceratopogonids "no-see-ums", and ticks). Vertebrates can become infected when an infected arthropod bites them to take a blood meal. The term 'arbovirus' has no taxonomic significance. The arboviral encephalitides are zoonotic, being maintained in complex life cycles involving a nonhuman primary vertebrate host and a primary arthropod vector. These cycles usually remain undetected until humans encroach on a natural focus, or the virus escapes this focus via a secondary vector or vertebrate host as the result of some ecologic change. Humans and domestic animals can develop clinical illness but usually are incidental or "dead-end" hosts because they do not produce significant viremia (circulating virus), and thus do not contribute to the transmission cycle.
