Insects and related terrestrial arthropods comprise over 80% of the life forms on earth. The Class Insecta alone is suspected of containing between one and five million species at a minimum. Biological studies on most of these are sorely lacking, and very probably fewer than half the extant species have been named and described. Insects, by virtue of their small size and rapid reproductive capability, are major competitors with humans for resources. These same characteristics, together with ease of handling and breeding, make them ideal organisms for the elucidation of basic biological principles. Insects are also extensively involved in the spread of many pathogenic microorganisms that impact plants and animals, including humans. The Department of Entomology at The Ohio State University is the only academic and research center for entomology in the state of Ohio, and exists as a necessary response to the central place occupied by insects in our society. The Department of Zoology and Entomology dates from 1891. The first Ph.D. in Entomology was awarded in 1904; as of Spring Commencement 2002, 418 Ph.D. and 561 M.S. degrees had been granted in Entomology. Close cooperation between entomologists at the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center in Wooster and those on the Columbus campus began in 1947, and the two units thereafter evolved into a single administrative unit. The former Department of Zoology and Entomology became two separate departments within the College of Biological Sciences in 1967. Formal merger of OARDC and The Ohio State University occurred in 1982, though the Department of Entomology has functioned as a unit since its inception.

Current Students Future Students
Our department has a long history of excellence in research, extension, and graduate education and we continue to focus on these areas for the issues that confront us today and for the future. The Department of Entomology works through two colleges-the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and the College of Natural Science . This two-college arrangement enables students to integrate the agriculture/natural resources and biological/physical sciences in an optimally beneficial way. We offer B.S. M.S. and Ph.D. degrees and consider graduate student education and postdoctoral experience to be one of our highest priorities. Click here to see photo's from

Our goal is to support and encourage students who are preparing for careers as scientists in federal, state, or industrial laboratories or in academic institutions, by providing them with as broad a background as possible in the many facets of insect biology. Programs within our Department encompass all levels of biological organization from the molecular level to ecosystems. In addition to training in modern methodologies of classical entomology, the Department has special emphasis areas in Insect/Plant Interactions, Biological Control, and Molecular Entomology. We take great pride in the progress and development of our students and the high quality of their research and publications. If you are a prospective student, we encourage you to visit our Department and to meet with the faculty and graduate students, so that you can judge the Department and its excellent facilities for yourself.

    Entomology
Entomology is a branch of Zoology that deals with insects. In other words, insects are animals. They differ from other animals in that they have three body parts, a head, thorax, and abdomen, on which are found three pairs of jointed legs. The insects have external mouth parts and are covered by a tough, waterproof exoskeleton. Most have wings. In the entire world, there are about one and a half million animal species described. Of this number, about one million are insects. Insects are bees, beetles, and butterflies. They are froghoppers, firebrats, and flies. They are also midges, moths, and mayflies. And there are more, so many more. Insects can be found in every type of habitat. From the Arctic to the Antarctic, treehole to tree canopy they occupy every land niche. They are essential to our well-being. Insects are plant pollinators, scavengers eating decaying debris, a source of medicine, recyclers of nutrients, a source of food for other animals and even some plants. Many are aesthetically pleasing and all are a source of wonder in their architecture and engineering feats. Entomologists continue to gather facts about these animals. Entomologists work in areas such as beekeeping; insect diseases; pest control; the effects of pesticides on insects, birds, and mammals; and classification and teaching; and in such areas of biological research as life history, ecology, behavior, physiology, and morphology.

Molecular Biosciences Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Kansas University has a tradition of pioneering excellence in entomology that has been recognized nationally and internationally for the past 120 years. In fact, "Entomology at the University of Kansas is as old as the University itself." As the result of recent departmental merger Entomology is now a full partner in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. The newly defined Program in Entomology at KU is unique, not only because of the former department's long history, but also because it is one of a few such departments not administered within a school of agriculture. We are primarily focused on the basic biology of insects: systematics, evolutionary processes, genetics, biogeography, ecology, population biology, behavior, morphology, and physiology.

We have the seventh largest insect collection in North America, which is worldwide in coverage. The collection holdings total more than seven million specimens, and focus on terrestrial and fresh water invertebrates. The museum is also home of the California Insect Survey, a storehouse of the insect biodiversity of California’s deserts, mountains, coast and great central valley.
