In physics and other sciences energy (from the Greek energos , "active, working") is a scalar physical quantity that is a property of objects and systems which is conserved by nature. Energy is often defined as the capacity to do work . Several different forms of energy, such as kinetic potential thermal electromagnetic ... nuclear , and mass have been defined to explain all known natural phenomena. Energy is converted from one form to another, but it is never created or destroyed. This principle, the conservation of energy , was first postulated in the early 19th century, and applies to any isolated system . According to Noether's theorem , the conservation of energy is a consequence of the fact that the laws of physics do not change over time. Although the total energy of a system does not change with time, its value may depend on the

Introduction
Energy is most often used in the context of energy resources , their development consumption depletion , and conservation . Since economic activities such as manufacturing and transportation can be energy intensive, energy efficiency energy dependence energy security and price are key concerns. Increased awareness of the effects of global warming has led to international debate and action over the reduction of greenhouse gases emissions. In the context of natural science , energy can take several different forms: thermal chemical electrical radiant ... nuclear etc. These are often grouped as being either kinetic energy or potential energy . Many of these forms can be readily transformed into another with the help of a device; from chemical energy to electrical energy using a battery , for example.

5. The Energy Story - Introduction
Detailed guide explains what energy is and where it comes from.
http://www.energyquest.ca.gov/story/index.html
Introduction
Energy is one of the most fundamental parts of our universe. We use energy to do work. Energy lights our cities. Energy powers our vehicles, trains, planes and rockets. Energy warms our homes, cooks our food, plays our music, gives us pictures on television. Energy powers machinery in factories and tractors on a farm. Energy from the sun gives us light during the day. It dries our clothes when they're hanging outside on a clothes line. It helps plants grow. Energy stored in plants is eaten by animals, giving them energy. And predator animals eat their prey, which gives the predator animal energy. Everything we do is connected to energy in one form or another. Energy is defined as:
"the ability to do work."
When we eat, our bodies transform the energy stored in the food into energy to do work. When we run or walk, we "burn" food energy in our bodies. When we think or read or write, we are also doing work. Many times it's really hard work! Cars, planes, light bulbs, boats and machinery also transform energy into work. Work means moving something, lifting something, warming something, lighting something. All these are a few of the various types of work. But where does energy come from?

Energy for America's Future
Fact Sheet: Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007
President Bush Signs Energy Bill To Improve Fuel Economy And Reduce Oil Dependence On December 18, 2007, President Bush signed the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, which will improve vehicle fuel economy and help reduce U.S. dependence on oil. The bill the President signed today responds to the challenge of his bold "Twenty in Ten" initiative, which President Bush announced in January.  It represents a major step forward in expanding the production of renewable fuels, reducing our dependence on oil, and confronting global climate change.  It will increase our energy security, expand the production of renewable fuels, and make America stronger, safer, and cleaner for future generations.  The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 will help reduce America's dependence on oil by:
  • Increasing the supply of alternative fuel sources by setting a mandatory Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) requiring fuel producers to use at least 36 billion gallons of biofuel in 2022.

The objective of energy research under FP7 is to adapt the current energy system into a more sustainable, competitive and secure one. It should also depend less on imported fuels and use a diverse mix of energy sources, in particular renewables, energy carriers and non polluting sources. Why is it important? Growing global demand for energy to power economic development and growth demands the development of cost-effective technologies for a more sustainable energy economy for Europe (and world-wide) to ensure that European industry can compete successfully on the global stage. What will be funded?

Energy is central to our lives. We rely on it for transport, for heating our homes in winter, cooling them in summer and running our factories, farms and offices. However, fossil fuel is a finite resource and is a major cause of global warming. So we can no longer take energy for granted. EU leaders agreed in March 2007 that the time has come for an integrated energy and environment policy based on clear targets and timetables for cutting fossil fuel use, saving energy and developing alternatives.
