The Ecotoxicology Group
The Ecotoxicology Group conducts both basic and strategic research in aquatic toxicology and ecotoxicology. Principle areas of research are: trace metals in the aquatic environment; metallothionein synthesis; arsenic in aquatic ecosystems and seafood; and oestrogen mimicking compounds. Aspects of this research are carried out in collaboration with other research groups within the Biology Institute, other institutes of University of Southern Denmark and other academic and governmental organisations both national and international
Laboratory technician Bente Frost sampling rainbow trouts caged near the outlet of the sewage treatment works of Odense (Ejby Mølle). Measurements of the production by juvenile fish of yolk protein (vitellogenin) is used as a biomarker for exposure to chemicals with estrogenic effects.
Trace Metals in the Aquatic Environment
One of the basic research areas of the Group is study of the fundamental biochemical and physiological mechanisms by which aquatic animals, particularly crustaceans, take up and handle essential and non-essential trace metals from their environment. This work examines the absorption of metals (copper, zinc, manganese, cadmium, mercury) and metalloids (arsenic and selenium) from water, sediments, and food, and investigates their subsequent distribution, metabolism, and excretion. Identifying the mechanisms by which non-essential metals and excess amounts of essential metals adversely affect crustacean biochemistry, physiology, and behaviour forms part of this work, as does study the mechanisms crustaceans use to detoxify trace metals, for example metallothionein synthesis.

Mission Statement Arkansas State University Ecotoxicology Research Facility (ERF) is a multi-user laboratory facilitating intercollegiate research and collaboration with other universities, state and federal agencies, industries, and various interest groups. The ERF utilizes standard US EPA test protocols and develops innovative techniques to measure environmental parameters and investigate ecosystem function. As a US EPA certified laboratory we specialize in laboratory and in situ biomonitoring to measure fate and effects of known and emerging contaminants for use in environmental forecasting. Ongoing Quality Control, Quality Assurance, and Good Laboratory Practice within the ERF results in scientifically sound research for use in environmental management decisions. The ERF is located on the ASU Jonesboro Main Campus. Our Northeast Arkansas community is home to diverse industries including agriculture, food processing, manufacturing, service and retail. Jonesboro is a progressive community supporting and interacting with the University through its public services and interest groups.

Lewis Publishers, Inc., 458 pp. COURSE DESCRIPTION AND ORGANIZATION Ecotox icology is the science that examines the fate and effects of toxins and contaminants in and on ecosystems, and t his course is intended to be an ecologically-oriented examination of the study of toxins in the environment .  Of course, ecotoxicologists do not all study at the ecosystem level, so we’ll examine fates and effects from the organism level to the ecosystem level.              T oxicology typically examines effects of toxins at the molecular, cellular, and organismal levels.  However, findings at those levels have not been well integrated into higher biological levels, nor are effects at higher levels always predictable based on findings at lower levels.  Ecotoxicology attempts to integrate and study effects at multiple levels of biological organization.  We will use the backdrop of current ecological and evolutionary theories to help organize the course and put toxicological findings in perspective.

    What is ecotoxicology?
Ecotoxicology can be seen as an important part of the broader field of response biology. It is the study of how biological systems (from the molecular and cellular through to the ecosystem level) respond to stress caused by environmental contaminants. It brings the disciplines of ecology, physiology and toxicology together and focuses on the effects of pollutants on populations, communities and ecosystems. [back to contents]
Are there job opportunities in this field of study?
In order to comply with international standards (such as ISO) when exporting products to Europe and other First World countries, South African industries are required to meet stringent environmental standards and submit to regular environmental audits. Not only the private sector but various governmental bodies provide career opportunities. Expert knowledge on ecosystem form and function and its responses to chemical threats is required in the following areas:
    • Nature conservation Agriculture and forestry Public health Regulatory bodies involved in registration of chemicals, setting environmental standards and enforcing environmental laws
