ECOLITERACY
Ecological literacy might be called "ecowisdom" because it encompasses such a broad array of understandings, knowledge, attitudes, and experience. I began using the term “ecoliteracy” to indicate the learning we need to seek in all dimensions of human life: intellectual, psychological, somatic, social, and spiritual. As someone developing ecoliteracy, I aspire to the following capacities:
  • awareness of our interconnectedness and kinship with all life a sense of wonder and gratitude for the world a strong sense of physical and spiritual connection to land and place a widening of identification beyond the individual ego to the "ecological self" an understanding of basic concepts of ecology and systems thinking, and perceiving relationships among humans and all living systems through these lenses comprehension of the major ecological and social crises we face and their interrelationships the willingness to experience both the pain and joy of the world lived values of cultural diversity, equality, justice, and inclusiveness

Ecopsychology
"To preserve nature is to preserve the matrix through which we can experience our souls and the soul of the planet Earth"* Ecopsychology is a synthesis of the psychological and the ecological. It is concerned with human behaviour but assumes the psyche to be bonded to the Earth. Humans' interactions with the natural environment, therefore, take on special significance in that they both reveal and influence states of mental health. The bond to planet Earth may first be read as a deep emotional one or biophilia. Biophilia is the innate attraction felt by human beings towards other living things that generates a sense of shared identity with all life. To love the landscape and feel compassion for all its creatures is a totally natural and healthy state of mind for a human being. The environment is not that which surrounds us, it is that of which we are a part. We are not separate from Nature. It is utterly reasonable in this respect to want to become closer to the natural world, to care for it and learn from it. It follows that to be disconnected from Nature, cut off from it physically, intellectually and emotionally, represents a dangerous state of affairs for we humans, one that leads to personal difficulties and wider social problems (not to mention devastating ecological disasters as well). Theodore Roszak* goes further in his contribution to the field of ecopsychology by proposing the notion of an ecological unconscious, an ecological dimension to the human personality that is natural and universal. For him, there is an ecological intelligence deeply rooted in the human psyche. Or rather, the human psyche is located inside a greater intelligence, the psyche of mother Earth herself. The human mind (or spirit), just like the human body, is an integral strand of the web of life. If the human unconscious is at least partly ecologically motivated, then, once again, disconnexion from Nature is injurious to human beings' mental and emotional health.

The Need For Nature

In an essay by Valerie Harms, she defines ecopsychology as an emerging field that attempts to integrate psychology and environmentalism, especially focusing on the relationship that the Earth has with the behavior of its inhabitants (Harms, 1997). Ecopsychology, a term made popular by Theodore Roszak's The Voice of Earth: An Exploration of Ecopsychology , addresses both the suffering of the Earth by the misbehavior of people and the subsequent suffering of the people due to the suffering of the Earth (Harms, 1997). She writes, "Ecopsychology...seeks to understand and heal our relationship with the Earth. It examines the psychological processes that bond us to the natural world or that alienate us from it." Ecologists need psychologists and psychologists need ecologists in order investigate dysfunctional behavior that leads to environmental problems (Harms, 1997).
Ecopsychologists claim that a physical separation from the natural world leads to a psychological dysfunction. This disconnection, alienation or overall dysfunction may lead to ecologically destructive behavior; individual human suffering such as anxiety, depression, and anger; or various forms of social and collective suffering such as racism, sexism, violence, and alienation from society (Scull, 2003). Ultimately, because we are separating ourselves from nature, we are not only threatening the well-being of nature, but are threatening our own well-being as well.

Ecopsychology/Integrated Ecology
The Natural Systems Thinking Process (NSTP) embodies both Nature's science and spirit. Academically and professionally, it falls within the field of applied ecopsychology and uses ecotherapy and ecoeducation in its application and teaching. Ecopsychology (EP), also known as Organic Psychology, seeks to redefine sanity as if the whole world matters. Taking the interconnected and interrelated nature of reality as one of its foundations, EP posits that since we come from the Earth and depend on the Earth for our very sustenance, we require a healthy Earth for our own health. But lacking our own health physically, psychologically and spiritually causes us to treat the environment in the same unhealthy, exploitive, and destructive way we treat ourselves and others. In a downward spiral, the Earth gets sicker, and we get sicker. We consciously and unconsciously destroy our very life support system even though we purport to know better. This is one of the core components of pathology in general, and addiction in particular. We must nurture Nature in order for Nature to nurture us.

Ecopsychology
SCHUMACHER COLLEGE
An International Centre for Ecological Studies Ecopsychology by John Seed We have all heard about the massive assault on our life-support systems. Yet it has not changed our behaviour except in rather trivial ways. How will we change our thinking and our behaviour to bring our technologies and lifestyles into harmony with the biological constraints of Earthly existence? What is needed? Not more horrifying statistics surely. Everybody already knows. We feel helpless and disempowered as the technologic juggernaut rolls along. Yet psychology appears to be too busy to address such things. What are the matters of over-riding urgency preoccupying psychology? Where is everybody? Playing at business as usual. Fiddling while Rome burns. Shuffling deck chairs on the Titanic.

    Spread the word of Ecopsychology!
That's an interesting perspective. I've been reading an article on Ecopsychology by Theodore Roszak et al. Guilt about the abuse of the earth, lack of defining milestones and rituals (spiritual), disconnectedness from the earth all are contributing factors to fanatical behavior (not only terrorists but extreme religious movements, gangs, etc). I more troubled with the current situation of our environment. It is continuously deteriorating and we have to move fast. I understand very less work has been done to this direction and world wide mass education is the need of the day. Can someone suggest how best we can spread the awareness? Reply Quote

Ecopsychology tells us that the healing of the self, and the healing of the planet are intertwined. Carl contends that there is an Ecopsychological blind spot in the United States, due to its Eurocentric perspective, which as has been based on the dominance paradigm. by Selene Vega Santa Cruz CAMFT Newsletter, July/Aug 1994 , Therapists for Social Responsibility column One of the major interests of the members of our Therapists for Social Responsibility group is the burgeoning field of ecopsychology. Our concern for the earth and its creatures and our responses to the many ways they are threatened continually emerge in our meetings as we talk about our experiences and those of our clients. Sometimes this takes the form of despair, as we look at the enormity of the problems and feel overwhelmed by the situation our planet and its inhabitants face. The challenge for us, and one of the underlying themes of our group, is to find our way through that despair to empowerment so that we can take action in the world to change things. The actions we make may be as literal as letter-writing or as subtle as bringing our vision of the possible future into all the work we do, with clients or in other areas of our lives. On the cover of the first issue of The Ecopsychology newsletter is a series of definitions for the term ecopsychology:
  • The emerging synthesis of ecology and psychology.

An introductory invitation to ecopsychology by Theodore Roszak.

WHY ECOLOGY NEEDS PSYCHOLOGY, WHY PSYCHOLOGY NEEDS ECOLOGY by Theodore Roszak, Director of the Ecopsychology Institute, California State University, Hayward, CA and Editor of Ecopsychology On-Line We invite you to join us in one of the liveliest dialogues on the cultural landscape. "We" are a new voice in the discussion of environmental policy and personal sanity. We began as a small group of environmental activists and psychologists in the San Francisco Bay Area and at the Cambridge-based Center for Psychology and Social Change. The subject of our dialogue is the emerging convergence of psychological insight and environmental urgency called (for lack of a better term) "ecopsychology." Two questions arise at once. Why does the environmental crisis need a psychological dimension? Why does psychology need an environmental context? The answer to both questions is the same. Understanding. We are convinced that there is no way to understand environmental issues without asking why they are happening. It is not enough to go from emergency to emergency, issue to issue as the life-sustaining foundations of the planet disintegrate beneath us. At some point we have to go to the core of all the issues, all the emergencies. Asking why people do what they do or rather, why people really do what they do takes us into the realm of psychology. It requires us to probe the irrational forces that underlie self-deception and verbal evasion. The project becomes all the more urgent when those forces are well rationalized, as they are in the case of our bad environmental habits.

    http://home.maine.rr.com/stfederer/ecoshift/ecopsych.htm
ECOSHIFT: Ecopsychology - Human Need for Nature
Revised August 21, 2006 To ECOSHIFT Home Page "We cannot have well humans on a sick planet.
We cannot have a viable human economy by devastating the Earth's economy.
We cannot survive if the conditions of life itself are not protected.
Not only our physical being, but our souls, our minds, imagination and emotions depend on our immediate experience of the natural world.
There is in the industrial process no poetry, no elevation or fulfillment of mind or emotion comparable to that experience of the magnificence of the sea, the mountains, the sky, the stars at night, the flowers blooming in the meadows, the flight and song of the birds.
As the natural world diminshes in its splendor, so human life diminshes in its fulfillment of both the physical and the spiritual aspects of our being.
Not only is it the case with humans, but with every mode of being.
The wellbeing of each member of the Earth community is dependent on the wellbeing of the Earth itself." - Thomas Berry Ecopsychologists believe that feelings of isolation and dysfunction in so many people today are rooted in a fundamental separation from the natural world. They use reconnection to nature as a therapeutic tool. The consumerist concern over money, status, and things may be a response to isolation from nature. Healing ourselves and healing the earth are seen as commensurate and inseparable. Theodore Roszak says that many of us are grieving profoundly for what we are doing to the earth, and that this is distinctly different from guilt, shame, or fear.
