Welcome to the Economics Website. This site is an introduction to basic concepts on economics and contains information, quizzes, activities and links to various online resources to learn more about our global economy. Why is it important to study economics or learn about our economy? There are many reasons, but one of the most important is the study of economics is concerned with how people get the goods and services they need and want. It also focuses on money - how it is made, lost, used and misused. When our economy does well, we as a nation and as people do well. When our economy is in crisis or doesn't do well, the nation suffers and we as people don't always get the goods and services we need. Thus it is important that all citizens be informed about the economy. Click on the topics below to get more specific information about the various aspects of economics. Participatory Economics (Parecon for short) is a type of economy proposed as an alternative to contemporary capitalism. The underlying values are equity, solidarity, diversity, and participatory self management. The main institutions are workers and consumers councils utilizing self managed decision making, balanced job complexes, remuneration according to effort and sacrifice, and participatory planning. This page links to articles, interviews, talks, instructionals, Q/A sessions, and books about parecon and closely related matters.
"A great many activists and concerned people ask, quite rightly, what alternative form of social organization can be imagined that might overcome the grave flaws often real crimes of contemporary society in more far-reaching ways than short-term reform. Parecon is the most serious effort I know to provide a very detailed possible answer to some of these questions, crucial ones, based on serious thought and careful analysis." In this study, we look at the percentage of the IT budget currently allocated to new initiatives, establish a benchmark for an appropriate ratio of spending on new initiatives versus ongoing support, assess current practices on tracking new-initiative spending, and discuss advantages for establishing systems to track this important ratio. The study is based on interviews with IT executives and a survey conducted in October and November 2007 on IT budgeting. The study analyzes responses from 112 IT executives representing companies with annual sales between $30 million and $100 billion. (3 pp., 4 figs.)
