The Society for Human Ecology (SHE) is an international interdisciplinary professional society that promotes the use of an ecological perspective in research, education, and application.
SHE' s goals are to:
  • Provide a forum through which scientists, scholars, educators, and practitioners may exchange ideas and information. Promote the advancement of an ecological perspective in interdisciplinary studies and practice. Identify problems, discover their origins, examine possible solutions and their implications, and then make recommendations for implementing those solutions. Look ahead to the consequences of human action on our social, natural, and built environments. Build cooperative arrangements among human ecology programs and organizations throughout the world.

Two Years In: Revisiting the Publication Niche for Avian Conservation and Ecology
Deux ans plus tard: retour sur le domaine de publication d’ Écologie et conservation des oiseaux
Thomas Nudds and Marc-André Villard
Our home page looks slightly different in this issue. However, the changes signify something much more important than their subtle nature might imply. Specifically, the ‘Focus and Scope’ for the journal – its publication niche – was confirmed, clarified, and shifted to a position of greater prominence over the last few months. On this two-year anniversary of ACE-ÉCO, it is appropriate to ask how we are doing relative to our declared publication niche. Between 2005 and 2007, total submissions (new and revised manuscripts) doubled to almost 2/wk; half of those in 2007 were resubmissions. Rejection rates fell from 60% to 44%. These trends are largely due to a decrease in submissions that did not fit the publication niche.

86. Ecology And Evolutionary Biology: Index
The ecology and Evolutionary Biology (EEB) Department carries out research in a wide range of areas across evolution and ecology.
http://www.eeb.princeton.edu/
In 1990 Princeton University divided Biology into the Departments of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and Molecular Biology. Since then we have grown and now consist of 18 faculty, approximately 36 graduate students, 38 postdoctoral fellows, and about 100 undergraduate concentrators. Our offices and laboratories are located in Guyot and Eno Halls, but our research often takes us to field sites in Africa, Asia and parts of North, Central and South America.
Although faculty and students in the Department study a wide range of biological problems, evolution is the theme that unites us, and mixing of theory and empiricism is a style that guides us. And despite our breadth, we are deep in the areas of ecology, evolution and behavior. Many of the research projects are interdisciplinary and have resulted in strong links to the Department of Molecular Biology Department of Geosciences Science Technology and Environmental Policy (STEP) . The excitement and quality of the research that is done in the Department creates an exceptional learning environment for undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral students. 88. Institute Of Ecosystem Studies Definition Of Ecology
ecology was originally defined in the mid19th century, when biology was a vastly different discipline than it is today. The original definition is from
http://www.ecostudies.org/definition_ecology.html
Defining Ecology
Our definition of ecology is: The scientific study of the processes influencing the distribution and abundance of organisms, the interactions among organisms, and the interactions between organisms and the transformation and flux of energy and matter. This definition is unique in that it emphasizes several things:
  • A starting focus on organisms, aggregations of organisms, or systems incorporating organisms or their by-products The bounding of ecology by both the biological and physical sciences ( figure The breadth of subject matters within ecology The joint consideration of both biotic and abiotic aspects of nature Depending on the ecological specialty, the focus can be on different proportions of biotic or abiotic aspects of nature ( figure The relationships between organisms and the physical world can be bidirectional, although different specialties may emphasize the effect of the organisms (and systems containing them) on the physical world, or the effect of the physical world on the organisms The boundary between the abiotic and the biotic aspects of ecology is blurry The disciplinary focus is on "processes", "interactions" and "relations" rather than on the physical entities per se

Research and teaching in the Department of Systems Ecology at Stockholm University focuses on the study of ecosystems and on sustainable use of natural resources
We study both basic and applied ecological problems, with an emphasis on coastal and marine ecosystems and coupled social-ecological systems. Research We have a long tradition of research on the Baltic Sea and its drainage basin. The Department has been involved in the development of the interdisciplinary field of ecological economics, and we perform research in many developing countries, mostly in the tropics. We view humanity as an integral part of ecosystems, and apply a systems perspective in our analyses of how ecosystems are used and abused by humans and on the interplay between societal development and the life-supporting environment. The Department provides a stimulating research environment and there is close collaboration with the Stockholm Resilience Centre and the Centre for Transdisciplinary Environmental Research (CTM) at Stockholm University and the
