About the San Juan-Chama Drinking Water Project
We are now moving quickly to begin using the San Juan-Chama water because our current system, which relies entirely on pumping groundwater from an underground aquifer, is being seriously depleted. Right now, only about 50 percent of the water pumped from that aquifer is recharged, or replenished. The rest is lost forever. The San Juan-Chama Drinking Water Project is one of six capital projects included in the overall Albuquerque Metropolitan Area Water Resources Management Strategy These six projects are: The North I-25 Industrial Recycling Project (Completed 2005) The Northside Non-Potable Surface Water Reclamation Project (Completed 2005) Southside Water Reclamation Plant Reuse Project 4) Drinking Water Supply Project
Will divert San Juan-Chama surface water from the Rio Grande and purify it for drinking. Includes new diversion facilities , pipelines, a pumping station, a water treatment plant , and transmission pipelines . (Pipelines scheduled for completion in 2007, Water Treatment Plant Scheduled for Completion in 2008)

Introduction If your family gets drinking water from your own well, do you know if your water is safe to drink? What health risks could you and your family face? Where can you go for help or advice? This pamphlet helps answer these questions. It gives you general information about drinking water from home wells (also considered private drinking water sources). It describes types of activities in your area that can create threats to your water supply. It also describes problems to look for and offers maintenance suggestions. Sources for more information and help are also listed. All of us need clean water to drink. We can go for weeks without food, but only days without water. Contaminated water can be a threat to anyone's health, but especially to young children. About 15 percent of Americans have their own sources of drinking water, such as wells, cisterns, and springs. Unlike public drinking water systems serving many people, they do not have experts regularly checking the water's source and its quality before it is sent through pipes to the community.

Skip to next paragraph Enlarge This Image Axel Koester for The New York Times The plant will process 70 million gallons a day. Axel Koester for The New York Times After a process of microfiltration, chemicals, ultraviolet light and reverse osmosis, the treated sewer water will be injected underground to refill aquifers. But on Nov. 30, for millions of people here in Orange County, pulling the lever will be the start of a long, intense process to purify the sewage into drinking water — after a hard scrubbing with filters, screens, chemicals and ultraviolet light and the passage of time underground. On that Friday, the Orange County Water District will turn on what industry experts say is the world’s largest plant devoted to purifying sewer water to increase drinking water supplies. They and others hope it serves as a model for authorities worldwide facing persistent drought, predicted water shortages and projected growth.

Water is a major part of every body part, system and function, in fact: With the majority of our bodies being made of water-and the rest depending on water to function properly, loss of water is a major concern. With the exception of oxygen, there is no other substance your body depends on more. Yet, 75% of Americans and 90% of the world's population are chronically dehydrated leading to a host of potentially preventable ailments. Few of us have been informed of the proper facts about water. When we look at the fundamentals that lead to vibrant health and peak performance, right on top of the list is drink the right water in the right quantity.

For this reason, and to protect the financial investment of drinking water supplies, the Illinois EPA operates a Drinking Water Operator Certification Program that certifies the technical competency of operators of community water supplies. An operator certified as competent by the Illinois EPA must be able to perform duties without endangering public health. In order to determine competency, the Illinois EPA must evaluate whether applicants for certification possess the necessary skills, knowledge, ability, and judgment to properly operate and maintain the facilities entrusted to their care. Therefore, applicants for certification must meet specific experience, education and examination requirements in order to qualify for certification. To help ensure that certified drinking water operators' knowledge stays current, certified operators are also required to meet continuing education requirements in order to renew their certificates.
