Telephone: 515-725-0281, Diane.Moles@dnr.state.ia.us The Iowa DNR Environmental Services Division administers the Public Drinking Water Program in Iowa under delegation of authority from the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The mission of IowaDNR's Public Drinking Water Program is to protect and enhance public health and safety, and the quality of life for all persons by ensuring the public drinking water is safe to drink. This mission is accomplished by ensuring drinking water quality is monitored on a routine basis, and that public water supplies (PWSs) are designed, operated, and maintained to minimize the possibility of contamination. The 1996 reauthorized Safe Drinking Water Act (SWDA) required that State's with primary enforcement responsibility for the drinking water program prepare and make readily available to EPA and the public an annual report on violations of national primary drinking water regulations by PWSs in the state. The Iowa Drinking water Program Annual Compliance reports are listed below.

    EMERGENCY DRINKING WATER SUPPLIES
    Prepared by:
Dorothy L. Miner Extension Water Quality Associate Specialist
Why have an emergency water supply? We often take our household water supply for granted. However, when safe drinking water is unavailable, it is more than just an inconvenience - it can become a health emergency. Hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, and winter storms are examples of natural disasters that can interrupt the supply of safe drinking water. Interruptions may be for only a short period of time, or for days. Every household should have an emergency water supply to meet its members' needs during these situations. You may be able to purchase bottled drinking or distilled water at the time of need, but stores may quickly sell out. How much water should I store? Having an ample supply of water is a top priority in an emergency. Everyone's needs will differ, depending upon age, physical condition, activity, diet and climate. Most people need to drink at least two quarts (64 ounces), which is equal to eight cups, of water each day. Hot environments can double the amount needed as the body uses water for cooling. The amount of water you need will also depend on the total amount of juices, soups, other drinks, and high moisture foods that are available. Children, nursing women, and ill people will need more. You can minimize the amount of water your body needs by reducing your activity level. Additional water will be needed for food preparation and hygiene. In general, store at least one gallon of water per person, per day of expected need. If you have pets, allow 1 quart per day for each dog or cat.

Are you getting enough magnesium to keep yourself healthy? "According to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (1977) there have been more than 50 studies, in nine countries, that have indicated an inverse relationship between water hardness and mortality from cardiovascular disease. That is, people who drink water that is deficient in magnesium and calcium generally appear more susceptible to this disease. The U.S. National Academy of Sciences has estimated that a nation-wide initiative to add calcium and magnesium to soft water might reduce the annual cardiovascular death rate by 150,000 in the United States."
